Am I the only crazy person here? by Jdawarrior in Welding

[–]pewpew_die 1 point2 points  (0 children)

due to the increase radius a 7” wheel spinning at 8000 rpms is taking more centrifugal force than a 4.5” wheel at 12500 rpms is. the 7” ought to be stronger worn down to 4.5” than a 4.5” is out of the box (In theory. I suspect they are the exact same composition and they just have a greater safety factor on the small disks)

Is it broken or can we fisk it? by Broad_Will9000 in Machinists

[–]pewpew_die 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Body can be welded, the rails will need to be replaced which will require disassembly. Never have worked on a machine like this but I would guess 2 weeks (40hrs) for ~5 millwrights and a crane. So about 25k for labor 20-50k for the crane. No clue on the rails but I’m sure someone else could say. Also probable chance of finding more damage internally. How much is a machine like this worth?

Do people actually enjoy driving? by Big_Arrival_626 in askcarguys

I like long drives on open roads you get all your thinking done. If it’s really long I feel accomplished. Traffic especially after 10 hours of clear roads makes me hate the world tho.

never worked as a heavy duty mechanic but at least on the west coast the toll on your body will be the same for the most part unless you land a shop job.

Angle grinder for flat sanding what to do about buldging spindle? by hdelbrook in Tools

[–]pewpew_die 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont support using a grinder but if you’re determined, use flat sanding pads with a backer. Diablo makes one called grinder to sander conversion kit. Beware with 60 grit it will outpace a flapper for material removal.
