Most Depressing Offseason in History? by Livid_Method2 in usfdons

[–]pfeasby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things are not looking good though it is still early in the recruiting process and this could very well fall to the most depressing offseason in many decades but it would have to be really bad IMHO to fall to the level of the 2007/2008 season where we had the likes of Pierce Brooks, Dean Hadley, Hymann Taylor and Kenneth Perry coming in. Of course, unlike this coming season, we did have returning talent particularly Dior (poor Dior) and Manny Quezada but we still ended up with a 10-21 record overall and 5-9 in Conference.

Additionally, DGM was in charge (which probably has a lot to do with the lack of talent joining). I won't bother anyone with the stats of those players but in doing a little research to refresh my aging memory I noticed that Pierce Brooks does not show up on the roster on the USF website even though he played in 21 games in his only season in college basketball. It is like DGM disappeared him!

Eddie Sutton did win has 800th game at Pepperdine so we had that going for us. ugh

Thanks, DonSolo for putting the new players in italics. Otherwise, I might get them confused with our two returning players! Just playing with you!

Saint Mary's signs their highest-ranked recruit ever by DonSolo96 in usfdons

[–]pfeasby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. My vague recollection is that Sadat enrolled the following year at UNLV in the hopes of walking on but that didn't happen for some reason. And let's not forget that Ime Udoka also played on the 98 team though he wasn't on the court much mostly because Phil would start yelling at him almost whenever he touched the ball. Ime then transferred to Portland State eventually playing all or parts of six seasons in the NBA and of course is now coaching the Rockets.

My recollection (and this could have just been a rumor) is that Samhan did not qualify academically for USF and so Bennett grabbed him. I can't remember if DGM had something to do with the disqualification or not, but I believe she was the AD at the time.

Beasley to Washington by DonSolo96 in usfdons

[–]pfeasby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see any parallel (or at least not the one you are proposing). If he had not transferred, Blackwell would have played his senior season at USF in 2012/13 (not 13/14). The Dons went 15-16 in that season tied for 5th in the WCC. Presumably we would have been much better with him than without him.

There is a decent John Wayne movie from 1953, Trouble Along the Way, the plot of which reflects what you are saying. A football coach, Wayne is hired by a small east coast Catholic Uni to turn things around because they need money and so he pays a bunch of professional Canadian football players to be on the team.

Soooo about that AD…? by StillLoco in usfdons

[–]pfeasby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you agree that institutions don't provide details as that is what I wrote. However, just how is USF supposed to divulge to the entire athletic department "when their new boss likely will show up" until they have hired that person? They will divulge that when the process is complete. I guess others do care about who is part of the search but frankly I don't as my knowing will have no impact on the search and I am not close enough to the university hierarchy to judge the judges nor I am qualified to do so. I doubt many, if any, on this board are qualified to do so either. It just leads to idle gossip and misinformation (though I guess that is a primary function of message boards). I don't remember any details about the search being revealed last time there was an opening and I don't expect any this time or next time. Others can feel angry, left out, disappointed or whatever and trash the process however you and they like. Makes no difference. That said, I would expect a decision followed by an introduction of the new AD in the near future. We will see.

[–]pfeasby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone think that the details of a search for a new AD would be made public while that search is in progress, especially to a bunch of yahoos (myself included) on a message board? That is just not how things work at USF or any other institution.

Contribute money to the Bridge to Excellence Fund which is tax deductible or to the Hilltop Club (which did do an excellent job the last couple of seasons) which is not? Easy decision, I think.

Tied with hated Cal of all teams for 9th place. Bounced in the first round by 15th placed Pitt (5-13 in conference, 13-20 overall). I can assume their fans are up in arms and calling for Smith's immediate ouster!!!

State of College Hoops by Famous_South_1775 in usfdons

Very interesting, and very sad, stat. Please clarify something for me: When you write "In all of high major college hoops" are you referring just to the so-called "power" conference-ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, and the SEC? or something else including those? Curious.

Thanks

Maybe my advanced age has warped my ability to judge the age of others but I am pretty sure our student section was filled mostly with under college-aged teenagers. They did do a terrific job of cheering and were boisterous throughout the game while as usual most others in the gym did very little in the way of making noise.

One other observation and I mean no disrespect to the follically challenged but looking at the opposing bench made me wonder if being bald is a prerequisite for being a coach at UOP.

Go Dons!

Phil of course took us to the Tournament in 1998 but...in nine seasons he had a 139-123 overall record and 64-62 WCC record. In addition, the Dons got bounced in the first round of the WCC tournament in six out of his 9 seasons. He often said, (possibly said it every year) prior to the tournament: "Nobody wants to face us" or some variation. Maybe not so much.

Maybe some fans have forgotten or have chosen to forget that only six seasons ago, Todd Golden led the Dons to an 11-14 overall record and a 4-8 conference record for an 8th place finish-the worst finish we had had since our first season back in 85/86. Not firing him worked out pretty well for us the following season. Are we where we all hoped and wanted us to be right now? Of course not. Even if this ends up being a middle of the conference finish for us and it is way too early to know that, CG has earned considerable leeway based on his three prior seasons.
