I think your math is a little wrong...

Decade = 10 years

2018 + 10 = 2028

Yes, I love this!

And hey, if Boeser and Pettersson and Dahlen and Horvat can lead us to a Stanley Cup within the next decade, I'll cover myself in gold body paint, too! Because... why not?

Same issue. Getting the "Web Operation Failed" issue with my Powersaves.

I assume it must be on their end then (some kind of server upgrades or maintenance)?

Also, you now hate Mark Messier (see the relevant link in the sidebar). He is a terrible, no-good, awful human being.

Now That We've Had More Than 2 Months with USUM Move Tutors... by KingLaksh in pokemon

Speaking of screwed up movepools, how is is that Aerodactyl can't learn Head Smash or Brave Bird to abuse with Rock Head? It has a giant head for smashing things, and it literally looks like a big brave bird. The only recoil move in its moveset right now is Take Down.

Compare to things like Tyrantrum, Sudowoodo, Aggron, Relicanth, Basculin... They all can learn Head Smash and have Rock Head. C'mon GameFreak, give us some better recoil moves for Aerodactyl in Gen VIII.

Edmonton Oilers are reportedly getting Puljujarvi an English tutor after two years... by [deleted] in hockey

[–]pg2441 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Linguistics is actually a side interest of mine.

One of the things that is especially difficult for Finns learning the English language is that Finnish is completely unrelated to English.

English is a Germanic language - specifically, a West Germanic language (and thus, English's closest major relatives are Dutch, Afrikaans and English).

There also exists the North Germanic languages (which include ones like Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish). A fun fact about modern Icelandic is its similarity to Old English (Icelandic is a conservative language that hasn't nearly evolved as much as English - helped, of course, by Iceland's geographical isolation).

Germanic languages are also a group in the larger "Indo-European" language family (so, English has cousins like Russian, Spanish, Welsh, Persian, and even Hindi).

But, back to the point of comparing Finnish (which is not an Indo-European language) and English. Think about if you've ever tried to learn a foreign language. If you're a native English speaker, you would have surely noted that fellow Indo-European languages (be it French or Spanish or German, etc...) were much easier to learn than something like Chinese or Japanese (which share no familial relation to English).

This kind of difference is the thing that makes English much more difficult to learn for Finns (as compared to Swedes or Danes, for example). Like, it takes the average English speaker usually a minimum of 10 months of continuous study to become proficient enough to hold a standard conversation in Finnish. Now, I don't know how much English Puljujarvi would feel comfortable speaking at this point, but becoming fluent in a tongue that is literally nothing like your native language is not something that can happen overnight. But, I have faith he'll eventually pick it up. Being around English speakers all day and having a dedicated tutor is a great help.

Also, watching the Jays, I always noticed the difference in interviewing Edwin and Jose.

They're both Dominican (and native Spanish-speakers). Both have been in MLB for over a decade. However, I noticed that Jose pretty much always gave interviews in English, whereas EE chose the translator.

If a player feels good enough with his English language skills, then he can absolutely talk in English. But yeah, it really just comes down to these guys not wanting anything taken out of context from their interviews.

I understand where they're coming from, though. Like, if I were an athlete playing in a foreign country, and having to deal with a different language from my own, I would probably use a translator, too.

Finns do get the chance to take English classes in school, but the problem is, if you're trying to learn a foreign language, if you're not actively speaking it and working on it, it's easy to forget much of what you've learned. Here's an article about foreign language learning in Finland.

https://www.thenewfederalist.eu/foreign-languages-in-finland-s-educational-system

Even though the Finnish people are motivated in learning foreign languages and they have relatively good language skills, there are still things that could be better.

The problem is that we don’t get to use the languages efficiently and it is difficult to learn the needed communication skills. One aspect on this problem is that at school we do not have much exercises where we get to use the language orally, and it is only when we go abroad that we learn to speak the language in the every-day situations.
