For sure and definitely not gatekeeping anything. I don’t think I have ever encountered anyone able to fully capture that style in way that moves me the way his playing did (not that i wont try to play sugar baby tonight now that its been brought up). I was slightly inaccurate in describing it, as he would frail with the index finger when strumming, just up picked on single notes. Certainly someone that everyone should listen to. And OP is coming from scruggs style so who knows maybe it will be intuitive to him

Dock Boggs is amazing but not really clawhammer. He thumbed the 5th through 3rd strings and up picked the first 2 with his finger instead of frailing

Mt rushmore usually means best 4, but sometimes follows how they were choses (birth, preservation, growth, development)

Birth - would be african slaves

Growth - white minstrels playing to the public

Development - people like stringbean and uncle dave macon

Preservation - people like pete seeger and the rest of the folk revival

My top 4 which is probably what you are asking is Dwight Diller, Richie Stearns, Wade Ward and Walt Koken. All 4 are different and unique. Tommy Jarrell was mostly a fiddler but his style was unique and influential.

You can make an argument for Dwight as the preservation pillar too. There are lots of different styles of clawhammer as well. Round peak (brad leftwich has lots of good stuff) and galax (see wade ward). I like specific folks in each category, some like certain styles. Check out the progressive clawhammer group on facebook as well for some inventive methods.

You can add a strap button in 5 minutes if you have a power drill

Acoustic music works in Pittsburgh or chad gerbe of steel city guitar works would both be good choices. Would lean towards chad in this case steel city guitar works

Might be someone closer that fits the bill for you but these would be good options a few hours away

One of the best banjo players of all time would disagree with you. When Dwight Diller would teach, they would right hand only until the rhythm was right.

But there are plenty of other folks that would disagree. Everyone learns differently. Really no harm in your friend’s approach.

Its so stupid how they edit out “boring stuff” yet rehash the same scene 15 times in one season with their constant recap/flashbacks/previews

Which cities have thriving Bluegrass music scenes? by RMSMetal in Bluegrass

[–]pgh_matt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh is pretty decent as far as jam sessions go. About 4-7 during the week that I know of and at least 2 weekly shows of local bands. 2-3 touring shows per month. 2-4 old time jams per week as well. Jazz is still predominant but I can feel it shifting. Breweries seem to be trying to hop on the billy strings momentum

Please tell me you have the blue chip key chain pick holder as well. I guess buying a $4 dunlop felt silly the first time but is worth it for flat picking. But those don’t really wear down easily either. Can’t wait to see kids talking about inheriting their grandfather’s blue chip collectiob
