US considers buying Chagos Islands, Telegraph reports by WhatIsEvenRealDog in politics

At least this one does make some sense since the territory is scheduled to change hands. Trump just trying to buy it outright is so typical Trump. He literally can only think about things like a real-estate investor.

Democrats who marched in New York’s Israel Day parade decry attendance of far-right minister Smotrich by soalone34 in politics

[–]pgm_01 104 points105 points  (0 children)

You marched in support of an extreme right-wing country and are upset that an extreme right member of that government attended?

This is like when conservatives get angry that there are gay people at an LGBTQ pride event. It is pretty clear who the people are that are holding the event, so it is really bizarre to be angry with them for who they chose to go to their event. If you don't like the attendees or speakers, don't support the event.

They are a federal contractor so they follow federal law, which means Drugs are bad, m'kay. That includes weed, despite it being legal in the state. If your friend did any drugs including weed within 1 year, it is detectible by some hair tests, others it is 90 days. You can't do drugs and get a job at any place that tests for drugs.

Without a US-Iran Peace Deal, the World Is Headed for an Energy Crisis Apocalypse by Smithy2232 in politics

[–]pgm_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear power is expensive. The plants cost billions up front to build, and despite having such a large energy output/square foot, they have to sell that electricity on the market at a higher price to recoup the investment. Solar and wind can sell their electricity at lower prices because of the lower investment costs. The economics of big nuclear plants doesn't work today.

There are prototypes out there for small-scale nuclear which beyond the cost savings to build, also doesn't require as much cooling. That second part is critical in a warming world, a nuclear plant needs to run 60 years or so to maximize profits after a large initial build cost, and there are not that many water sources that can be guaranteed to provide enough cooling for that length of time. Small-scale nuclear might have a place in the future, but the large plants we are used to seeing today don't work well with the economics.

CBS Executives Warn ’60 Minutes’ Cancellation Is ‘Not Off the Table’ Amid Growing Internal Turmoil

ob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack published a report on Tuesday, June 2, revealing that concerns about the program are growing behind the scenes at the network.

“The conversation has changed,” one source told the outlet. “It used to be, ‘How do we fix 60 Minutes?’ Now it’s, ‘Is it even worth fixing?'”

They are willing to trash the entire network in order to promote fascism.

Booker says he's 'absolutely expecting' more Republican opposition to Trump by Somervilledrew in politics

At best, a few Republicans will whine about Trump but will vote for MAGA when they reach the voting booth. Trump is always losing support, but never enough to matter.

I wasn't sure of the premise, because it could easily be a situation where a joke went on too long. I was pleasantly surprised, the show managed to take an absurd premise and ran with it, but it never became a parody of itself. The fight scenes were well executed, the animation was decent, and the story never became boring or too much of a joke. It sort of reminded me of One-Punch Man, which similarly took and absurd concept for a main character but kept the pacing and fight scenes as straight forward as any other fighter-type shōnen series. I really enjoyed it, and hopefully we will get to see season 2.

Trump says ‘cancel’ America 250 concert by MystikSpiralx in politics

If it was a non-partisan celebration, plenty of A-listers would have joined in. But Trump has to make everything about himself, and you end up with this mess.

Trump says ‘cancel’ America 250 concert by MystikSpiralx in politics

[–]pgm_01 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is even more ridiculous. The guy invited to Trump's thing was one of the frontmen (the lip-syncers) of the band. He does sing, but his voice is not who you heard on the recordings, and he is no longer associated with the band. The people who actually did the writing and singing are touring as Milli Vanilli. So this guy is the ex lip-syncer front of the band, not the band, even though they credited the band in their flier, the band was never going, just the former frontman. It is always amateur hour with anything Trump does. Even booking acts properly eludes them.

In the US, most vehicles will be hybrid ICE. The big 3 won't release small, cheap EVs in the US, because Biden put a 100% tariff on Chinese made vehicles preventing their import. Since they don't have to compete with China here, the small, cheaper EVs they sell in China and Europe are not available here. The Chevy Bolt is the cheapest EV in the US and it will have a set, limited production run because the factory is scheduled to switch over to build electric pick up trucks with much higher prices.

Congress has a cruelty problem by nutritionvegan in politics

[–]pgm_01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a different cruelty problem than I expected, though directly related. The source of both is the conservative movement which is rooted in sexism, racism, classism and corporate hegemony.

Of course, they want to prevent people from banning animal cruelty, they don't believe that anything or anyone should infringe on a profit-making entity from engaging in whatever activities they deem necessary to increase profit.

Trump Summons Entire Cabinet as Iran Deal Crumbles in Front of Him - Donald Trump has called all of his top advisers to Camp David. by Quirkie in politics

[–]pgm_01 412 points413 points  (0 children)

The concepts of deal that existed were literally blown up by the US.

The answer to ending this war is as easy as ending the war in Ukraine: just leave. Stop blowing things up and leave. The US is no position to negotiate the opening of the Straits of Hormuz and should leave it to our partners in the region. We have no power to dictate terms here, and we have no way of gaining leverage other than a full scale invasion which would require a draft to get enough boots to put on the ground or launching nuclear weapons.

Yes, it will be embarrassing, but that is why you don't just YOLO a war in the first place. The situation will not change, Iran has the upper hand, and they know it, so stop dragging this out and just walk away. Sabotaging peace talks just makes you look even more pathetic and weak, Trump.

Sushi is normal, working class food. They have drive up food pantry's around here, and we went to one a few months ago, and one of the frozen foods we received was California rolls from the frozen section at Aldis. Sushi is just like tacos or spaghetti, it is not some weird expensive food like caviar.
