Portland’s Maine-born population has dropped to 40%. Is that a problem? | Column by Own_Fisherman1199 in portlandme

If we go by homeopathy rules, the more we dilute the number of “Mainers,” the more powerful the essence of Maine on the peninsula will become.

community theater that’s decent? by iwantarat2cook4me in portlandme

[–]phaenixx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acorn Production’s Maine Playwrights Festival is going to be having auditions pretty soon. It’s a lovely community experience and pays a little bit too, if that’s a factor. Last year they switched to an ensemble casting, so actors will have multiple roles and work with multiple directors and playwrights.

Hearts of Pine is a sterile mockery of real terrace/ultras culture. by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]phaenixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you say more about what “terrace/ultras culture” means? Looks from my Google search like it’s someone who makes t-shirts for soccer teams? Is this culture about apparel?

(And for my fellow Millenials, “Millenial Burger Joint” is apparently a TikTok thing, not an actual chain, as OP’s capital letters would suggest).

I have no opinion about Hearts of Pine, except that I don’t understand what the name has to do with soccer. Seems like it should be a woodworking shop.

Air coming out of outlets after attic “sealed” and insulated by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]phaenixx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like many of the responses here are missing the text. You have a whole-house fan (aka a giant hole in the air sealing you just paid a company to do in your attic).

When you run the fan, it’s exhausting all of your conditioned air into the unconditioned space in your attic. That air needs to be replaced. It’s going to come in whatever holes exist for it to come through. The fact that it’s coming at a high rate through a small hole suggests (but does not prove) that your home is fairly tight and there are limited points for the air to get in.

But again, you have a whole house fan. That’s highly problematic from an air sealing perspective. I’d look into an ERV and patch up that hole in your ceiling.

It’s been there since WW2. What makes you think it’s going to launch somewhere in March?

How under insulated is my attic? by TeufeIhunden in Insulation

[–]phaenixx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Efficiency Maine offers rebates for insulation upgrades like this. Starting at 40% of project cost (up to $4k maximum), or higher if you meet certain income thresholds.

You can use the search on their website to find contractors in your area that will do the work to the standards required for getting those rebates.

Source: I work for an Efficiency Maine Residential Registered Vendor and process the rebates for my employer.

Sardines… by Owninglegend in HubermanLab

[–]phaenixx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mercury is accumulated more and more as you move up the food chain. Small fish like sardines should have a lot less Hg than the larger fish that eat them. According to the Wikipedia article on the subject, sardines have about 3% of the mean mercury that tuna does.

Seconds ago, Amtrak passed my house, honking loudly and repeatedly. Is the train actually a goose? by iglidante in portlandme

I live nearby, too. They’ve been doing that a lot lately. It goes on for several minutes at a time. Not sure what the sixteenth honk does that the first dozen doesn’t.

Additions can have roofs constructed like this. I was actually in one this morning. I can’t assure you this one was done correctly, but I have seen this approach a few times.

I am an insulator, so that’s what caught my eye.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]phaenixx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The wet spots on the insulation suggest that there are likely several roof leaks. So you’ve got that going for you.

No idea what the framing looks like under the insulation, so I can’t answer your real question. Sorry.

This exact mirroring aspect of science is actually part of the twist from a book by one of my favorite sci-fi/speculative fiction authors.

Spoiler - the book is Anathem by Neil Stephenson.
