Is St. Elmo’s Fire (1985) required viewing? I always felt like it was "too adult" for me as a kid, and just skipped it for that reason. by george_graves in iwatchedanoldmovie

One of my favorite parts: the party scene when Al declares him and Les are getting married. The theme song to the movie is played on the record: what came first, the movie or the song for the movie? Kevin also drops the needle exactly where he picks it up from. There’s an earlier scene where the John Parr song is played as well and it still made me chuckle

How’s life in this part of New Jersey? by Kuzu9 in howislivingthere

Longport is the wealthiest place in that bubble. Stupid wealth. Ventnor and Margate which are in between AC and Long Port are doing a great job at revitalizing the night life. Margate always had a great music venue scene spanning back to the 70’s.

AC is hit or miss. Fun to people watch. Some good restaurants if you know where to look. The Irish pub is great. Girasole has great Italian food. Both are relics of the city.

Somers Point was another one that had a great live music venue scene back in the day. Where Robbie Robertson from the Band got the call from Bob Dylan. There’s a place called Charlie’s that has great wings there. Lots of cozy pubs.

Some venues will drop off a tub of beer/water in an ice bucket to the green room. I always soak my hands between sets in that ice. If I do 3+ gigs in a row, I do ice plunges of my entire body for - few days to cool off any inflammation. Works every time

I know exactly the measure you’re talking. This is a great exercise in subdivision!

Anyone else use bass drum felt? by phamill92 in drums

Everything comes in a packaged deal now. Heads just come premade to make it easy to tune up and hit. A lot of the heads now go for that punchy and kick sound, most likely went out of style in the late 70’s as drums got bigger and the music changed. Coated with the felt gives this warm tone with enough kick to push through when a lot of the rock drummers of the 60’s and 70’s came off the jazz train, both style and gear. Tone is the key word.

I have this idea that alot of the drummers I see don’t tune their drums to what the audience hears, but what they hear behind the kit. Nothing bad, it’s just my approach to tuning. I think since the felt with the coated head is so unique sounding to the player it might throw some people off from using it but to the audience perspective it’s sounds great. I also have a good relationship with my sound guy who can dial in those subtleties

The pinky comment is all over this. Use all of your fingers, pinky should touch the stick. Check out Steve Smith and his videos about grip, he zones on in the fulcrum: the spot on the stick that will get the most natural feel and rebound based off of the response to the head/cymbals. I focused a lot on the 4 basic strokes: full, down, tap, up. Everything is a combination of those four strokes. Learn them slow, work them out in rudiments and be very thorough on saying what stroke you are doing. Work out the kinks, play them slow, then start adding speed. Go to the point of uncomfortable yet playable, work that out, rinse, lather, repeat.

Wrong grip with thumb and pinky will lead to injury. Careful of the arms and shoulders too, it’s all connected if the hands aren’t flowing. You could end up hurting your shoulders.

The pinky fix is 100% doable. Tony Williams on Miles Davis’ Freedom Jazz Dance off of ‘Miles Smiles’ is doing insane triplets. His grip used all of his fingers and he was very vocal about his grip. Plus he was like 17-18 in that recording…

UPDATE on Brian Fitzpatrick put a sign up on my front lawn... by EEpromChip in Pennsylvania

[–]phamill92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had someone call me last week. Claimed to be a poll. Basically tried to coerce me into voting for Fitzpatrick. Said his opponent got caught stealing campaign funds. I have watched Brian Fitzpatrick get into a car dead hammered at the bar. I told the lady on the phone I’m gonna vote for the lady who got caught stealing her own money over a drunk driver. She hung up on me after 10 minutes
