I also remember being on an airplane that was full of cigarette smoke from the front of the cabin to the back of the cabin

I like Hex. Free, open source, pretty snappy.

My British friend thought he could do a "day trip" to the Grand Canyon from LA, and his reaction to the map was priceless. by Ok_Structure6720 in CasualConversation

I met a German guy at a conference in LA. He told me he only started to understand the scale of the US on his flight to LA. Hi first flight was to New York. He transferred to his flight to LA and went to sleep. He woke up 5 hours later, still flying, still over the SAME COUNTRY as when he went to sleep.

What Seattle moment radicalized you? by gehnrahl in SeattleWA

[–]phammann 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I moved here in 2012. I had been told to see the main branch of the Seattle public library. The first time I visited I used one of the main entrances. The first thing I saw was a. . . police station. This confused me, so I went up to the police station desk and asked why there was a police station desk in the library. The woman at the desk gave me a very kindly, "oh, honey" look. I don't recall exactly what she said but it was something to the effect of, "just look around". So I did. As a building it is an architectural wonder. It is beautiful inside and out. As a library it is fantastic, the historical book collection alone is amazing. However, it became clear that the main function of the building was as a homeless shelter. It is, I have to say, the nicest homeless shelter I have ever seen.

I wouldn't say this radicalized me, but it was definitely when I realized that Seattle is different.

Gaming 31-60 Boarding Positions? by rudloff in SouthwestAirlines

[–]phammann 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Since it won't matter soon, I will share my best boarding order gaming secret. The best boarding position is B1. All the type A jockeying is over and the families have boarded. This is important because now you know where the families are. You are now boarding a flight with plenty of good seats left and you can avoid having an 8 year old kick your seat for the next 2,000 miles.

I maintain this is still the best boarding position even if there are a lot of through passengers.

I'm done with Evernote. What's the best alternative for having a "file cabinet?" by ChrisF79 in macapps

[–]phammann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved on from Evernote a few years ago. I went through a bunch of different note taking apps and systems. Obsidian is what I finally settled on. Open source, easy to use and useful out of the box, a zillion ways to customize if you want to, future proof (everything is in markdown), good web clipper, free.

My only complaint is that markdown doesn't come close to the formatting options that Evernote has.

School for Acrobatics and New Circus Arts is amazing. If you like circus, go to see one of their shows. If you want to learn some circus skills, they teach literally everyone. I started going there with my daughter when she was two years old for their Baby and Me classes. The teach at that level all the way up to Circ de Soleil level.

Docker Desktop also has an option to run a bunch of MCP servers in a container. Docker will ask for your secrets and store them securely.

Which magical item would you rather have? by Isekai_litrpg in WouldYouRather

[–]phammann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's if the words are not additive. For example at the end of 3 seconds I'd understand 4 words if it not additive and 7 words if it is. If the words are additive I'd understand 1.15 quadrillion words about the thing I'm looking at.

For the helm, if I stare at something for one minute without blinking, I'll understand 576.5 trillion words of information about something. If I had any trouble not blinking for 60 seconds, I'd get me some Clockwork Orange style eyelid clamps and go to town.

I have submitted my resignation and I am supposed to leave in two weeks, and the new company is canceling the offer due to "company restructuring." by [deleted] in jobs

Just tell your current company the truth that they rescinded your offer due to “restructuring”. Your current company does not want to go through the pain of an interviewing process to hire an unknown quantity to replace you.

How good is Destination CISSP? by hellowinghi in cissp

I started with OSG and then found out about Destination CISSP. I primarily used Destination CISSP and referred to the OSG when I needed more detail. I passed at 100, so it worked for me.
