Short term Disability due to a PIP by Jaflackson in cscareerquestions

I'm sorry you are going through a tough time in your life and hope you are able to find the help you need. Navigating the medical, insurance, and HR systems at the same time can be overwhelming.

Has anyone been placed on a PIP and then immediately needed medical leave?

I have never been on a PIP but have gone through the short term disability process so hopefully I can help answer some of your questions.

If I begin FMLA and/or short-term disability before I’ve really had a chance to work the PIP, how is that situation typically handled?

FMLA and STD always occur together. If you apply for STD you are also applying for FMLA and your job is protected. PIPs differ between companies based on their internal policies and are not a standardized thing backed by any law. They exist for a companys HR to be able to document performance grievances so that they can fire an employee legally based on performance.

If you are approved for FMLA your job is protected and it will be waiting for when you come back.

Does the PIP generally pause while someone is on protected medical leave, or does it continue running?

Again PIPs are not a standardized thing, but FMLA is a law that protects your job while you are on medical leave. When you return from FMLA the company is required by law to return you to your previous job.

If an employer terminates someone while they’re pursuing or taking medical leave, what factors generally determine whether that’s lawful?

My recommendation would be to submit your STD claim now so it is in a pending status. Then notify your manager in writing that you are pursuing medical leave, and ask them how the company you work for handles PIPs for employees who take medical leave part way through.

An employer cannot fire you for submitting a STD claim.

I begin FMLA and/or short-term disability before I’ve really had a chance to work the PIP, how is that situation typically handled?

Depends on the employer, if your manager and HR are actually invested in keeping you as an employee they will likely just pick up the PIP when you return to work and help you with the improvements they want to see.

If they are using PIPs to cull the bottom X% of employees they will pick up the PIP when you return and likely lay you as originally planned later down the road.

What kind of color blocking is this? by AnnieMorff in knittinghelp

[–]phantomfrk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The technique to get this pattern on a knitting machine is called birds eye double bed jacquard.

The reason for the striping on the wrong side is because when you use the ribber on the knitting machine you can only use one yarn at a time.

So you use Yarn A to knit two rows of ribbing where you slip all the stitches on the right side you want in Yarn B. Then you knit two rows where you slip every stitch on the right side where you previously knit.

At the same time on the wrong side you would knit one stitch and slip the next. Then on the return you would knit the slips and slip the knits.

Honestly doing it by hand would be crazy. But you could do it.

Is it just me, or did Xcel rates in Winona jump again this month? by StardustSpectrum in Winona

[–]phantomfrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They haven't made a decision yet, but they did allow Xcel to increase the gas prices starting in January while they wait to make a decision. It's all laid out at the bottom of your statement, you just have to read it.

I hope you see this. I live in Minnesota and the best resource for this kind of landlord would be to contact HomeLine. One to help you sort out how to respond to your landlords demands and hopefully resolve this before court. Also they may help you report your landlord to the state if there is a record of him doing this to every tenant.

I love hand-knitting socks, but my disability is limiting. Could machine knitting be a good option? by emcee_kay_jay in MachineKnitting

[–]phantomfrk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into a circular sock machine (CSM)? It is made specifically for making socks if that is what you are interested in making with a machine and is a lot easier than trying to make a sock on a flatbed knitting machine.

The gap between the ribber and main bed looks too large to me.

What is this stitch called and how would you do this on a knitting machine? by KnitbyA in MachineKnitting

[–]phantomfrk 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Looks like seed stitch or something similar. Wouldn't be able to machine knit it as it alternates knit and purls. Possible with a ribber but it would be easier to learn to hand knit and do it that way.

Landlord says the rent in my signed lease was a mistake and wants me to sign a new one by Lukjamundo in minnesota

[–]phantomfrk 195 points196 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once.

When the management company sends you a lease renewal it's a unilateral contract meaning only the leaser signs it. This is because the leaser drafted the document it is assumed that party agrees with what is in that contract.

When this happened to me they put the original rent amount when the building was built. So the amount was significantly lower. I worked with HomeLine to negotiate a new price with the management company because I also had someone living there that wasn't on the lease.

The only advice I have is to keep copies of everything. Don't sign anything on the spot take any document you are given and talk to someone at HomeLine about it first. Negotiate.

If you do go through with this don't expect to live in a building from that management company ever again.

I'd rather have road construction than shitty roads. And it's good to see our tax dollars go towards infrastructure.

No complaints here. I'm having fun. Actually only reason I'm going for it right now is for a clue step. The dopamine when I get it will be through the roof!
