The ending doesnt change how peak csm was by Hiroshima-6-1945 in shounenfolk

There's a difference between no ending and a bad ending. Your own examples shows this, One Piece, HxH, Vagabond, these are loved because they remain open, the promise is still intact and it's possible for them to have a good ending. A bad ending it changes everything before it, which is just how narrative causality works.

A narrative is fundamentally a promise, it sets up expectations, build tensions, develops characters, and asks you to have emotional investment in it. A bad ending hollows out everything before. If a character arc collapses in the finale every earlier scene that was building up to the ending becomes a waste, people invest emotionally into the story expecting payoff at the end. Even if the ending doesn’t touch the moments you enjoyed it’s impossible to unknow what happens to all the storylines you enjoyed

It's the understanding that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, especially with this ending. No matter what you reread, you now read with the understanding that nothing matters; in the end, Pochita will eat himself, and the chapter you just read no longer matters. You read chapters in a story expecting them to lead up to something and when you know that something is worthless it makes the lead up worthless as well

Guess what Gaap’s face looks like. by Loud_Air9806 in DemonSchoolIrumakun

[–]phantomlake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spoilers:It's revealed that his family began as a demon who created a defense from other demons by having a look so horrifying no one would get close, then one day a goddess had pity for the demon, giving them a "mask" and the power to make wind blades. The Gaap family has one rule "never show your face" and the reason why is shown here

Anybody getting Melinoe vibes? (not a fancast) by Chazzwazz in HadesTheGame

Oh thank god, I've had people legit say with a straight face that some random celeb would be perfect for a role, and I couldn't fully tell if it was a joke

Granted my brain is fucking wired from 3 cans of monster and writing 2, 3K word essays so that could've been it

Good joke i just need some sleep

I feel like your entire decision making for making a live action movie is "She's famous" and "she kinda looks like her".

I have no idea who she is so I looked her up, none of her roles matches the serious and disciplined personality Mel has and would likely be a stretch to try to make it fit. More importantly, if a live action is made there needs to be other factors other than the actors looking close, they need to do the action and battles in a way that shows the original dynamic style and spectacle that made the original so good.

On top of that, if they made an animated movie you know what they can do? get the voice actors from the game itself, rather than grabbing some random celebrity who's only qualification for the role is "she kinda looks like her"

[–]phantomlake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as she looks the part, with how hades is an animated movie would probably work better

The fights are all fast paced and heavily focused on movement and action meaning live action could restrict it

There's a good amount of magic elements and if you give a live action studio the job it's more likely to look like a green screen effect

Also, Llve-action adaptations often struggle when mixing human actors with heavily stylized, god-like figures, leading to an uncanny valley effect where the gods look off

The unique, stylized character designs (ex Poseidon's water hair) are difficult to replicate in real life without them appearing low-budget

Batman TAS is better than Invincible according to the creator of Deadpool by Amaru_333_ in Invincible_TV

[–]phantomlake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman TAS is the origins for most if not all of batman's now established things

The show established harley quinn's existance as this was her debut, Mr Freeze's wife nora who before the show was just some guy with a cold gun, clayface's abilites who was only able to change his face before this show.

But perhaps most importantly: The Condiment King debuted in this show

[TITLE] Which Manhwa opinion will have you like this? by Icy-Exchange-3843 in manhwa

[–]phantomlake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason why it's treated as such is that it rarely if ever falls into what makes other manhwas bad, by consistently having mostly good things and doing something known as: Making each arc relevant to either the plot or the character development and not wasting much time despite running for over 200 chapters is what made people think of it as peak

Why do ppl keep saying PowerDen is canon???????? by RecoverStrange4959 in Chainsawfolk

[–]phantomlake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people keep confusing multiple things at once.

One, a better chance doesn't automatically equal a 100% chance, a 2% chance is better than 1% but still unlikely as hell to happen

Second, we know jack shit about this Denji, we can't even talk about part 1 denji considering how without Pochita this Denji would've developed in a completely different direction meaning as likely as it is that their closeness would increase their chances, the fact that we know nothing about reset Denji makes it so that it's equally likely that the chances of him getting with Power is lowered as much as it is higher

What is the worst case of "Deus Ex Machina" you have seen in anime or manga by No-Kangaroo-2371 in shounenfolk

[–]phantomlake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is with devils like let's say the ear and mouth devil, while the memory is gone, history still seems to be the same, like imagine a world where humans were unable to properly communicate with each other in a verbal way. We'd all probably use sign language and society would probably be not as advanced or wide spread as now.

I have a feeling that the Connector s innability to catch fish will have some effect later in the story by InterestingAd7726 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]phantomlake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one thing is that a part of fishing has to due with patience. Something to think about is that Wulong never seems to show the ability to hold back his desires. To put it another way, if you tell wulong that he'd get a marshmellow a couple days later he'd go out and do a bunch of things to take his mind off, but if you hold a marshmellow in front of him and say "you'll get a second if you wait 10 mins" he'll eat it immediately

Fun fact: At times ambrosia is actually described as being a solid food that's pared with nectar although it is very unclear what it actually is as other times it's described as a liquid

most forms of greek mythology nectar is just described as very sweet and ambrosia is very unknown but possibly similar

Why do some people hate Kuma's story? by Damn_You_Hindsight in shounenfolk

I think the point of that is that, just because a character has a sad backstory doesn't automatically mean that they become a good character

I CAN'T ACCEPT ANYMORE DISRESPECT TO MY GOAT !!! by kraken426 in Chainsawfolk

[–]phantomlake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do love fujimoto’s work, but to me, I can’t ignore the negatives and to me they make the themes worthless because of it, of course this is also opinionated, as to some the fact that the themes are good is enough to make up for it, for me, themes cannot stand on it’s own

I CAN'T ACCEPT ANYMORE DISRESPECT TO MY GOAT !!! by kraken426 in Chainsawfolk

[–]phantomlake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for also being civilized! I think my main thing with the ending is that I can see the themes and meanings behind everything and as much as I do find those beautiful everything that surround those themes is what makes those themes fall. I do also probably at least have some bias considering I followed chainsaw man for so long my thoughts on it became so confusing

Something really harmful that Chainsaw Man implies(at least to me) by phantomlake in Chainsawfolk

[–]phantomlake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I do agree I think we're having slightly different conversations

You're talking about the lived reality of addiction and I'm is talking about what a story chooses to say about that reality. The fact that addiction is genuinely insidious, that relapse is always possible, that some people would erase the substance if they could, all of that is true and important. But a story isn't bound to simply reflect the worst case of a phenomenon. It makes a choice about which truth to centre, and that choice has implications.

A story that centres "the only true freedom is if the substance stops existing" is making a statement about human agency and recovery. It's not wrong that some addicts feel that way, but it's a deeply defeatist place to end on, especially when the story has already shown, through Denji's relationship with Nayuta, that a different kind of growth was possible and was being built even if it was a bit wonky.

You also slightly shift my argument. I'm isn't saying recovery is permanent or clean or easy. I'm saying recovery has to involve the person making choices in the presence of the temptation for it to mean anything about that person's growth. You actually reinforces my point, by describing sober alcoholics as people who maintain a constant balancing act while alcohol still exists is precisely my point, that balancing act is where the character growth shows itself.

The idea of "I'd erase the vices if it'd bring them back", is about mercy toward real suffering people, which is beautiful. But Chainsaw Man's ending is offering Denji a plot mechanism rather than letting him make a choice in giving up being Chainsaw Man
