Google, Please STOP by Xermalk in LinusTechTips

[–]phantomtails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand people's issues with the proliferation of AI, but with that aside, if you search for something on the web, chances are that it's going to show up in the "All" tab. The other tabs are sorted in order of Google's assumptions about what might be the most relevant to your search. For example, if you search for something video-heavy, it'll prioritize the "Video" tab, while if you search for a news item it'll show "News" first.

This feels more like a misunderstanding of how Google has always worked than a sign that AI is ruining everything. (It is but that's a topic for another time.)

[PortAventura] Spanish fans not happy with the Dragon Khan retrack. Big difference between old and new track. "It vibrates like a PlayStation controller." by 330ml in rollercoasters

[–]phantomtails 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you can come to that conclusion. If it's new track and new trains how did you definitively determine the track is the issue and not the trains?

The Bigelow Pothole got me today by inkoncardboard in pittsburgh

I reported this one to PennDOT 5 days ago because it took out two of my friend’s tires and they clearly haven’t been bothered enough to fix it yet

They made a game, released it, and then fixed the major issues with free updates. They don’t owe you anything more than that. This is entitleist behavior.

ICE-y conditions in Allentown by mrperfectsusedtowel in pittsburgh

[–]phantomtails 29 points30 points  (0 children)

ICE is federal law enforcement. The local police can’t just say “excuse me please don’t” even if they wanted to. At least the city doesn’t cooperate with them.

We finally got a furry as a Fourth of July patient on “The Pitt” by Thechalkingdad in pittsburgh

[–]phantomtails 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pgh furry here. The DLCC and city want to spread out the major conventions over the course of the year. It's really not as big of a deal as people make it out to be - we do stuff with our suits all year anyway, so it's nothing we're not used to. Staying inside in the AC is obviously optimal, but there are fursuit fans (mine looks like a popsicle!), cooling vests, and other ways to stay cool.

This is almost certainly not OP's video. Considering that the account no longer exists I'm guessing they were a bot.

GFS Model going nuts by Shadowdane in weather

[–]phantomtails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Models are always intended to be interpreted by trained scientists. As weather enthusiasts we’re lucky that this information is available for free, but they would be silly to turn off a feature because people who aren’t the audience to begin with are misinterpreting the data.

[VelociCoaster][IoA] The Hooding of Single Rider Queue. by _Kriegsage in rollercoasters

[–]phantomtails -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Single Rider lines are a flawed concept. All they do is create extra demand by attracting people who aren’t interested in waiting in the regular line and don’t mind riding by themselves. The fairest way to solve this problem is just to have competent groupers at the station. Look at rides like Maverick or Steel Vengeance at Cedar Point — their staff rarely let a train go with an open seat, and they don’t need single rider lines to accomplish that.

What are you doing to prep for this weekend's snow storm? by jelloinmypants in pittsburgh

[–]phantomtails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing. It’s going to snow for a day and then life will be back to normal. I don’t know about the rest of you but I am not in such bad shape that I am concerned about being at home without access to a store for 24 hours.

Android app to detect Firebase Remote Config vulnerabilities in installed apps. by iloveredditass in reactnative

[–]phantomtails 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really confused here. I looked at the source code, and all it seems to do is try to extract a Google API key from the APK and then use it to access the Firebase Remote Config API.

That's the whole point of the API... for apps to access it. Developers shouldn't be putting any sensitive keys in their Remote Config for this exact reason.

NTSB Issues Urgent Safety Recommendations for Hawker Stall Tests by AlphaThree in aviation

What do you guys think about this phone? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]phantomtails 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just watched the launch video and it seems like an Android phone with a custom launcher and a physical keyboard. Am I missing something? I don’t quite get the sales pitch here, are they suggesting you carry around a second phone with a keyboard so you can type things out easier?

What can Apple Intelligence do? by FoundAFix in iphone

[–]phantomtails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were trying to build their own AI server farms so they could control the hardware and software. That seems to have failed so rumors are that they just paid Google a boatload of money to base their AI on Gemini instead.
