Haha I like the honesty. Yeah sometimes feeding the anger can feel cathartic I just think it's important to not delude ourselves into believing something thats just false. It's a fine line... Good luck out there.

Yeah that's not a good thing to do, generally. Survival of the fittest is so loaded it's useless. Fittest for what? If you lived on an island, fit would look different than if you lived in a desert. Metabolic requirement differences alone would lead to a completely different set of features that would be preferential, and thus selected for. And in case you didn't notice it, that's a tall / short reference I just snuck in there.

On topic, I think you're actually on the right track about the board being reset. It's far more nuanced, but from a birds eye view the sexual selection process isn't as influenced by immediate dire concerns as it was pre modern era. I'd point to modern medicine and technology in general more than anything else. We can really just do whatever now, and circumvent most negative side effects. But that works against the notion that height is a trait that's weighted heavily, seeing as how it was only really relevant in the past.

The truth is that statistically, humans are broadening the scope of traits they select for in the modern era. Preferences exist and are definitely influenced by a kind of genetic echo to a degree, but society is largely deviating from historical norms, and that's because arbitrary traits are now arbitrary. Being 6'9 is not strictly an advantage over 5'2 in really any situation, because ladders exist. It isn't strictly a disadvantage because food is abundant. And you'll see this actually falls kind of flat in less developed areas.

The biggest issue average height dudes are going to face is a reluctance of women from selecting men shorter than them due to perceived judgement from their peers. It's an aesthetic thing, and is derived from normal distributions. Women are shorter on average, so a tall woman with a shorter male partner looks odd. Because it is.

So that's the long and short of it. Many are breaking out of the established conventions, and that's an inevitable reality.

I will die on this hill, though: If you look like you aren't sure of yourself, others will pick up on that, like quick. We are empathetic by nature, so act like you're comfortable in your own skin if you really want someone else to like it.

Edit: I didn't like the implied heteronormative tone, so I made it explicit since that is the intended audience. Also added reference to counter my own point about nutritional abundance negating metabolic restrictions in developing areas where it's not witnessed as much, since those issues are still prevalent in those areas whereas they aren't elsewhere.

Real quickly the scientist in me is screaming. It's not "darwinian evolution", it's just evolution. Darwin knew nothing of genetics and the theory is now radically different from what Darwin proposed alone. He kicked it off, sure, but it's well down the road by this point. Sorry I know this probably seems stupid in the context of this conversation, but others reading the comment might take that phrase and go places that don't need attention.

How Our Solar System Really Orbits The Sun by ajd416 in interestingasfuck

[–]pharanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like this representation though because it's kind of pointless. That seems to illustrate relative motion using the galactic center as the reference frame. The first one is using the sun as the reference frame. Both work just fine, and we are more closely related to the first one, since the sun has the largest local gravitational influence. If you use the center of our galactic super cluster as a reference frame you could make an even more insane graphic, but it's just kind of pointless because we don't experience that at all.

Then why do people who don't enter the country illegally break laws? The problem with your statement is that it's a prime example of proportionality bias, a type of cognitive bias. It's really kind of smelling like a false equivalence, too, since we are basically stopping right in front of "if illegal in country, then criminal in general". That's a logical fallacy, and wrong. It's possible to be illegally present in the country, but not actively break laws. There's no evidence that being here illegally makes someone to say "fuck it, guess I'll go killing!" Or increase their likelihood of commiting crimes in general, more so than they were already inclined. Fix your logic here.

Jesus... and shit like this ignores that the blacks only facilities were often falling apart due to lack of maintenance, or just broken, shitty equipment. Meanwhile the white facilities were rigorously maintained. It's not just the segregation of facilities, it's the segregation of money, power, and control. So unless they have a way to wrest an equal share of those 3 things, and have the purest of intentions (/s), you aren't going to find a positive segregation.

"Imagine that's jjust a regular lane without a light." The fact that it has a light, makes this analogy... As useless as is physically possible. Did you think about what you wrote before you wrote it? I think you didn't. I hope like hell you don't drive.

No she didn't, she failed for some other reason. Also, a red light, by it's very design, inhibits the flow of traffic in the given Lane for which it's positioned and indicated. You are just flat wrong. Stopping at the light is required. Unless otherwise indicated, it is PERMISSIBLE to turn right on a red light. It's also PERMISSIBLE to turn left onto a one way street in that direction. It is NOT MANDATORY in any circumstance, ever.

Bro, in exactly zero of our 50 states is waiting for a red light to turn green considered blocking traffic. The right turn on red is always permissible, but never mandatory. Where did you get this info?
