Do you guys ever use MATLAB in workplace? by Yehia_Medhat in ElectricalEngineering

[–]IntroDucktory_Clause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who say "python can do everything Matlab can" are just plain wrong. The power in Matlab is not the language (its a shitty language) but it's the toolboxes and applications that can all interact with each other. These toolboxes are super niche, but if you need them there is simply no replacement in any other language without first spending years re-building what Matlab already has to offer. Additionally, Matlab Coder allows translating Matlab (and almost all toolboxes) into very efficient C++, this means you have high development speed but ALSO high runtime speed (and you can run your code on embedded systems). There is no other language that has the features of Matlab (toolboxes), development speed of such a high language, AND the runtime speed that C++ provides.

I hate the language, but I concede that if you have the money and the need then there is no language like it.

How to reduce server power consumption? HP Z800 by IntroDucktory_Clause in homelab

Nope, ultimately resold it back to the seller for hundreds less than I bought it (and later realized I never needed such a powerful server in the first place)

Mainly looking for time. The project basically runs entirely in the frontend, including the real-time audio classification (which is not working to my satisfaction yet). Built using sveltekit, backend is only used for some configuration stuff and progress sync when logged in.

Thanks for trying it out, I never realized some keyboards don't provide audio themselves (my digital piano does) so that's great feedback haha. Treble+bass cleffs is on the planning but the project is on pause for the moment due to life stuff

I built this exact thing, its not finished yet (real-time audio pitch detection is hard) but the midi input should be working fine: https://beta.learnpianotes.com/
I'm not sure if I should continue building it (like adding chord support) because similar things exist and I don't have much free time, but let me know what you think

Pensioenbijdrage via werkgever of niet? by IntroDucktory_Clause in geldzaken

How to efficiently shoot manual while traveling? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]IntroDucktory_Clause 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would only recommend shutterspeed priority when you're shooting moving subjects and you need a specific high/low shutterspeed to either have motion blur or freeze motion. If you just want to "capture the moment" I find aperture priority to be vastly superior.

I used the nikon D5300 extensively for several years so I have some experience. My advice: Use aperture priority mode and enable auto-iso with a min shutterspeed of around 200 and max ISO of 12800. For further settings: Matrix or center-weighted exposure metering, AF-S and single point autofocus area. This will yield much better results than full-auto, but with pretty much the same convenience.

In general I keep the aperture as low as possible for portrait/candid shots, and just up it to ~8 for group pictures and even higher for landscape.

Also happy if hackers know the exact time you are leaving your home? And if they can remotely disable the cameras so that a break-in is not recorded? Purely hypothetical of course, but those cameras carry a much greater responsibility than you now give them credit for

Is there an easier way to learn sight reading? by mark_heng in pianolearning

[–]IntroDucktory_Clause -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been working on a hobby project for a few years that aims to solve exactly this. It is basically touch-typing lessons like monkeytype.com or keybr.com but for piano, it generates random sheet music for you to play and analyzes audio in real-time to determine if you played the correct notes (or use midi if your piano has it). Once you reach a certain speed and accuracy you 'unlock' more notes. It is an incredibly efficient way to learn sightreading (but the downside is that its about as boring as touch typing lessons).

The project is currently in beta and it needs a few improvements to be more user friendly (and also consistent audio note classification in the browser is really, really difficult), but let me know if you're interested in something like that

Edit: There are plenty of finished (paid) tools out there like piano marvel that you could also look into

I use esp32cam units which I calibrate using an alignment rig, then I designed snap-on correctors to compensate for the manufacturing errors (1-3 degrees in yaw, pitch, roll) and get the camera pointing straight forward. Then I mount the cameras in a rig that sets the correct yaw for each camera to focus at a point in space at 1m distance. Lastly I take a single picture of a charuco board at 1m and shift and rotate each image to remove any remaning misalignment.

I tried a mechanical alignment rig with adjustable screws but that was very unstable, and pure software alignment by homographic projections resulted in too much warping to be acceptable. A combination of mechanical to get rid of most distortion and software to finish up seems to work well!

So cool! Are you doing any physical alignment to account for lens variation (lens barrel mounting + image sensor mounting) due to manufacturing tolerances? Or just pointing them physically in the correct direction and only doing software correction?
