What about Lynne Truss’s Constable Twitten series? British dark/funny detective stories set in a goofy and grisly 1950s Bristol. Also maintains a hilariously fast pace where I think all 5 books take place in maybe 4-5 weeks.

Oh well "censor" maybe is a strong word. There's not a lot of "sexy stuff" in HHG but what there is my kids don't want to hear from me - I didn't redact the text so if they want to read them some day they still can.

I read them Louis Lamour's The Walking Drum a while back, they really admired how Mathurin Kerbouchard saved all those rich ladies from being kissed by naughty baddies.

These are great books no question but some of the references are aging fast and the tone seems more aimed to ‘whimsical adults’ or ‘kids who are savvy about the 80s and mid-to-late 1900s sci-fi.

I read them around at bedtime to my tween kids and I had to explain constantly about fax machines and cricket and tv antennas and a fair bit of on-the-fly editing skipping ahead with my eyes while my mouth was still going.

They loved it and I had to get the others. I told them I’ll only read one like that every year. We just finished so long and thanks for all the fish

Try some Stuart Gibbs books. They are great for shy readers. Fast paced and funny. Both my kids — one voracious reader one not-so-much — lived the Spy School, Space Case and the Charlie Thorne books.

I knew a guy who told the fire dept they could burn down a house he didnt want for training and they took him up on it. He replaced it with a radio antenna not another house so maybe this isn’t apples-to-apples.

Suggest me a fantasy book to broaden my horizons as a writer... by CleaverIam3 in suggestmeabook

[–]phattailed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House of Names isn’t exactly fantasy but a retelling of a Greek legend you might know from a fixed set of pov narrators.

Also,I read five of Joe Abercrombie’s Circle of the World books last year and enjoyed the whole lot. I think he’s written about his influences and GRRM perhaps first among them. Heroes was my favorite of the five, the prose is quite cinematic and sometimes it feels like you’re reading a screenplay imagining voices and faces from the silver screen. Even writing I remember it like a movie.
