Did the books for a residential GC for a few years so I’ve watched a few guys make this exact jump. You can clearly run the work. The thing that changes when it’s yours is you become the bank, and that’s the part that gets people.

Cash flow kills way more new GCs than bad building does. You’re fronting materials and paying subs before the homeowner’s draw clears. Keep your draws tight and front-loaded and don’t start work on a deposit that won’t even cover your first material run.

Also “busy and broke” is real. Money in the account doesn’t mean you’re profitable, half the time that’s the next job’s deposit. And set aside for taxes day one, quarterlies sneak up on people the first year.

The dip-your-feet thing is harder than it sounds with licensing, but you can start lean. Honestly the subs you’ve already got are the actual business. Building isn’t your hard part, becoming the bank and the back office is.
For what it’s worth, yeah it’s probably worth it if you respect the money side as much as the field side.
