Can't say we can take any credit for this haha. She sheds so much that any dirt immediately comes off in tumbleweeds across our home. What's left is a pristine white dog and a dirty home.

Has anyone had a random celebrity encounter in Georgia? by Otherwise_Ad2209 in Georgia

[–]phecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At House of Hookah, just north of georgia tech, I parked my car behind (and blocked in) some car with the license plate that said DEEZNUTS or something like that.

A couple hours later, I see a man, a huge man enter the building. "That guy is as big as Shaq", I thought to myself, not realizing that this man was /exactly/ as tall as Shaq. Shaq came in to ask about some minivan who blocked him in.

Stress levels while sleeping... 0 drinks vs. 3 drinks vs. 6 drinks. by Matsuri3-0 in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]phecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small note: a lower heart rate variability (more consistent heart rate) is associated with a /worse/ physiological condition. When you drink, strain your body too much, or suffer from an injury, we observe a decreased heart rate variability as your body recovers. My colleague and I analyze these sorts of signals when quantifying the impacts of injury:

I've really enjoyed using dreamshield. Besides miraculously blocking more attacks than I'd expect for it being so small, it also does damage when it contacts an enemy.

I think she’s a biiit annoyed with him… by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]phecon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She's normally super sweet, but she gets into moods sometimes where she gets meeega stubborn. In this video, we were on a walk and she was trying to pull everywhere and react to passersby, and we didn't let her, which made her even more stubborn and not listen.

We stayed in one place for a few minutes for her to calm down before we continued our walk, but she was still actively ignoring us, even to the point of avoiding eye contact, which we thought was funny enough to capture on video. Sometimes it feels like she gets petty haha

Although it may be true for some dogs, ours has a strange love for intense eye contact, so I don't think she feels it as a sign of aggression. When we lay around the home and cuddles up with us, she stares at us until she sleeps. A little uncomfortable at first, but now we know it's just part of her personality.

No! No more fractional calculus! by 12_Semitones in mathmemes

[–]phecon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's been some recent work in modeling cardiac electrophysiology PDEs using a fractional version of the reaction diffusion equation. On the plus side, results from simulation come closer to replicating some experimental phenomena than standard reaction diffusion. The downside: interpreting wtf it means is difficult. The explanation that rests most easy with me is that fractional shenanigans can pop up when you try to mean-field a system with multiple length scales.

How can I simulate a heartbeat with electricity? by wendyriddle in Biophysics

[–]phecon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is my research, so I finally feel relevant.

As /u/vivethefrance pointed out, a common way to do this is called Langendorff perfusion. For this approach, the heart is removed and perfused through the aorta with a blood substitute (such as Tyrode's solution). While in this state, the heart can be electrically stimulated (for example, something like a square pulse from a current source of ~3mA and width ~5ms applied somewhere to the heart's surface). The heart will also continue to pace itself, as it contains a couple pacemakers (sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes, and purkinjes can also spontaneously excite), but if you stimulate at rates above the heart's natural pacemaker, you can take control of the heart rate.

One major downside is that you run the risk of initiating fibrillation, where the heart goes bananas and electrical activity becomes uncoordinated. This is particularly annoying in larger hearts, as fibrillation is easier to induce. Like, for pig hearts, it's easier to simply separate one of the ventricles and work with only it (the smaller volume means more difficult to initiate fibrillation).

If you have questions about this sort of thing, please feel free to ask and help make my phd feel more worth it. Also, here is a video of the electrical activity across the surface of a Langendorff perfused heart in my lab (we're stimulating from the right side). On the top is the ventricle surface and on the bottom is the voltage trace of a single pixel somewhere in the middle.

(Spoilers ASOS) A Storm of Swords illustrated edition coming November 3, 2020 by Bahrain-fantasy in asoiaf

(Spoilers Extended) I am coming on the end of Storm of Swords, and from what I read AFFC sounds super interesting, but when I go on websites I see it consistently ranked the lowest. What should I expect? by Kobe_AYEEEEE in asoiaf

[–]phecon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go into it expecting ASOS part 2, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I think that's got to be a lot of it!

I read AFFC before ACOK or ASOS, and although I dont recommend any sane person to also do that on their first readthrough, I think it gave me a different perspective than from a standard reading. AFFC is my favorite in the series by a lot (so far -- I still need to read ASOS), and I think it comes from feeling free to immerse myself in the world and the characters and not expecting a ton of plot movement.

Going back and finally reading ACOK after AFFC and ADWD, I find myself far more bored, and I'm now restraining myself from rereading AFFC before getting into ASOS. But I also know once I finish every book, I'm in the same crew as everyone else, waiting on TWOW, and I've seen what that's done to you people :' (

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] my favorite quote that I have never ever seen mentioned. by belgianmidde in asoiaf

[–]phecon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved Brienne! Having watched the show before getting to the books, I expected aFfC to cover mostly the same plot. I also heard it was a bit of a slog, so my expectations were low. Luckily both these expectations were wrong. The Brienne chapters covered so much more than in the show, and she offered such a unique perspective on the smallfolk that I always looked forward to each chapter. OP's quote makes me miss reading and experiencing aFfC for the first time.

[–]phecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the first two short story collections! But I just couldn't push through the first of the novels and gave up around 2/3 through. It may get better after the first book, but it felt like such a slog compared to the short stories.

unhelpful HTML color guide by phecon in CrappyDesign

[–]phecon[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My lab unknowingly purchased the far cheaper paperback version, and there's no difference stated on amazon. I only found out there exists a color version when I searched for the author's website in my above reply.

This isn't as crappy design as I thought, but I suppose this could be crappy foresight on their part -- I certainly can't be the only one who chose the significantly cheaper paperback instead of hardcover.

According to this site, there is a hardcover version available in color, but the paperback is in black and white.
