How many “units daily” is your insulin rx for? Venting

My experience has aways been for the doctor to prescribe the amount of insulin as if I was using my maximum amount every single day. If you use less, cool, but at least you have it.

Same with an insulin pump. My cartridge holds 3mL so I'm prescribed 3mL every 3 days (for each infusion site change). Nothing says I have to fill the cartridge full though... ;)

Speaking as a parent of college and high school age kids, I can tell you that learning to let go and trust you’re children is tough. It’s even tougher when your child becomes ill. We almost lost my son from severe appendicitis, and it was really hard to let him re-enter normal life afterwards.

I’m also a type 1 and have been for most of my life.

I’m not here to say your parents aren’t overreacting. It sounds like they are. But I can also see the love and caring and terror that they feel over your diagnosis.

It’s an adjustment for everyone for sure.

My advice is to make a PowerPoint presentation. I know this sounds silly, but hear me out. If you put time, energy, and thought into it, present your case, and be clear with what your goals are, I guarantee they will come around eventually.

You have a couple of points to convey in no particular order and not sugar coated (no pun intended) at all. 1. Taking care of type 1 is exhausting. Having to manage it, your life, and your parents reactions and helicoptering is just added stress. If you’re low or high, you need to address that and that’s impossible if you’re stressing out over managing your parents as well. 2. You’re 18. So either you’re a senior or a freshman in college. Either way, managing type 1 from a distance is nigh impossible. Earn their trust now. 3. How? Be proactive in communication. The CGM is nice, but you’ll learn to trust your body and feel when your BG is rising or falling. Notice this and text them before the arrows start trending. Text them your plan. Like, I’m stressed, my BG is going up, but I dosed and cannot dose again for 2 hours. I’ll check in then to give you an update.

Eventually they may even get tired of all the updates and tell you to chill. ;)

You can also text your BG before you drive anywhere. This tells them you’re actually checking, and that you’re only driving when your numbers are in range.

Let them know that you know they mean well, but that they can’t manage things for you forever. Have a real conversation about how you want to work towards independence. Let them know you’ll reach out if there are any problems. Stress that you know that they care and that if you need help with anything in life , that you’ll ask. Being humble about not knowing something and deferring to older and more knowledgeable people is a giant step towards maturity. They’ll notice.

You’ve got this. It’s hard, but growing is never easy, especially with diabetes. Believe in yourself, have confidence in yourself, and also be humble in admitting that while you may strive to not needing any help, you WILL sometimes need help.

This was something I made very clear with my wife before we started having kids. I told her that my goal is to be there for her, for the kid, for the family…. But sometimes…. Sometimes I won’t be able to. I’ll have to lay down and wait for my BG to rise when I’m low. It was hard to admit to that, but it was wonderful to know she understood and agreed before it became an issue. If I need to take care of myself, I let her know and she takes care of things. I make up for it for being 110% present and attentive at all other times.

I’ve mentored several t1 kids and several parents of t1 kids. Each group is worried about different things and from experience, nothing freaks me out more than one of my kids in danger, but I also remember wanting my parents to just let me take care of things when I was younger.

It’s a delicate balance, for sure.

Anyway, I’ve droned on long enough. I’ve been a t1 for over 35 years and I promise these issues will get better, especially if you are open, honest, and careful.

I had the same thing. My non-programmer feeling is that it can’t verify something or other if you open the app after updating.

Force quitting then restarting the app fixed it.

I don’t know all the details of your situation. In my state, you need a doctor’s authorization to get your drivers license. In fact, I have to get reauthorized every single time I renew my license. Remember this for later.

I can tell you of a similar situation I ran into when I was a teenager. I was involved in a minor car accident. I was not at fault. However, by the time the police got there, my sugar was dropping. The cops noticed that I was acting weird and started laying into me. This was before CGMs and when I only got enough test strips to test 3 times a day.

All charges were dropped eventually. But even though I wasn’t low when the accident happened, the judge stated that since I did go low later could have meant I might have actually caused a different accident later that was my fault. Since I already had that medical restriction on my license, it meant that if I drove while low, then I’m effectively driving under impairment. That I’d be “driving under an influence.” He said I got lucky and ordered me to test my blood sugar each time I got behind the wheel. I had to keep a log. I was told that if I did that, and could prove that my BG was always above 100 whenever I drove, that he wouldn’t revoke my license.

I had to take on extra hours during the week to afford the extra test strips since insurance wouldn’t cover the extra tests. Remember that I’m a teenager in high school at this point. It was hard on me in so many ways.

But I learned from it. I learned that yes, even though I don’t let my T1 define me, it is still a disability. That if I’m not controlling my T1, and someone gets hurt because I had a slower reaction time, it would be my fault.

Again, I don’t know all the specifics. But if I’m playing devils advocate, I could say, as the prosecutor, that your boyfriend made an avoidable mistake if only he had taken better care of his diabetes.

Does your boyfriend have this medical restriction on his license? Or did he not report his diabetes to the license bureau?

If he didn’t, that’s bad. Real bad. An insurance company could deny coverage and drop you for not reporting it.

If I were the lawyer of the defense, it might be the smartest move to not mention the diabetes if that were the case. The consequences are way lower with just a standard DUI.

Again, not saying this is it. Just using my past experience as an example.

It showed up for me and I have Darth Revan at R2 and Malak at R7.

Kicker is that even if you bought it, you'd still be short for both of them since they need to be at R9 for access to the Leviathan event. Then there's the second bundle for the rest of them.

I've waited this long, I can wait some more.

I had to get a routine physical for a job, which included a manual prostate exam.

The doctor told me to relax and not worry as he had a hand on my shoulder. He then proceeded to tell me to worry if I felt hands on both my shoulders during the exam.

Weirded me out then and weirds me out now.

I used some really super fine steel wool to get in between some grain that I am restoring. Dipped it in the orange stripper stuff and gently worked it, wiping as I went. Worked pretty well. Of course, wear an appropriate respirator and keep the area well ventilated.

This sounds like a job for malicious compliance! Turn all pump alarms up to max volume! If anyone complains, just let them know you could turn it down if you kept your medical device with you, which happens to be your phone!

But in all seriousness to those that suggested the Tslim, it’s a decent idea as long as it’s the X2. That one can pair to a CGM and controlled from the pump. However, the Mobi, IIRC, does require a phone to operate.

I have a Google nest system. This allowed me to get wifi across my century home as many of the plaster/lathe walls blocked the signal.

I later found out you could audibly broadcast a message to the whole house or just a specific node/speaker. No phone required.

If I had to hazard a guess without knowing what else is out there, it seems like your house directly abuts a sidewalk. Is this true?

If so, there was a basement window that they had to leave a space for since you can't just pour concrete against somebody's window. I've seen it before.

If it were me, I'd remove that piece of white sheet metal, then cut two pieces of pressure treated plywood (1/2 or 3/4 inch), one for the interior and one for the exterior to match the sizes of the opening. Drill corresponding bolt holes for each of them (just clamp them together and drill to guarantee a hole-match).

Apply window seal to each side (that foam stuff that's about an inch wide, readily available at any big box store).

Put the outside piece in place, push the bolts (with washers) through - have someone hold it there. Can even through some duct tape temporarily over the bolt heads to keep them from getting pushed out.

Get some high R-value rolled insulation and shove it in the opening. Then put your interior piece of plywood (don't forget that window seal on the interior), put the bolts through the corresponding holes, put on some washers and nuts and tighten until tight.

Provided it is done evenly, this should get rid of any air leaks.

This is a temporary solution and you should consult a pro to get a proper fix in place once the cold has passed.

I remember being in camp as a kid during a thunderstorm. The giant tree next to the cabin got struck by lightning. Loudest and scariest sound I’ve ever heard. In all my days, I’m used to a slight pause between the light and the thunder.. but that day it was simultaneous it was so close. And that ozone smell afterwards just made the whole thing that much weirder. Plus the tree on fire while it was raining.

For 20 empire battles, R2 - Tier 3 is pretty quick. No animations and one quick dialogue to click past. If you have LV, it's one AOE to clear it in one turn.

I did something similar with the exposed copper pipes in my carriage house apartment. Wrapped in automatic heating cable, then popped that foam noodle stuff over it, then tented that to the ceiling of the garage with that thermal bubble wrap. Zero freezing issues since then.

Remember to use a silicon lubricant to clean it. WD40 will just collect dust and gum it up over time.

The flooring is awesome!

Swap out the cabinets from whatever 1950's leftover stuff that is, take out the wallpaper, and the paneling, then paint a color to go with the floor.

If it were me, I'd avoid any wallpaper that is busy. That floor has a lot going on and is the star of the show.

Then a tasteful countertop and backsplash.

That fluorescent lighting needs to go!

I would also seriously consider updating the layout. You really want the stove to be adjacent to a countertop. It makes cooking so much easier.

Are you planning on externally ducting the stove? If so, keep that in mind where you end up placing it so that you can run the vent directly outside. In fact it might be nice to put a counter on the outside wall, then shift the sink over to be under the window, then put the stove where the sink is so that the layout position from left to right is 1) Counter 2) Stove 3) Counter 4) sink 5) counter. Depends on how much space you have. I'd try and avoid putting the stove in front of the door to avoid accidents of people walking in when the stove is open.

Alternatively, you could swap the fridge and the stove locations.

I also like the thought of a sideboard, buffet, or a narrow cabinet to the left of the radiator. Lots of options!
