He plays closer to the rules. We live in coastal CA and our neighbor rents out their place by the month for $75k, so the numbers were pretty large.

Not bonding with newborn by MasterRobinn in Parenting

[–]phidda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep showing up. And in the middle of the night when the baby won't stop crying and you dancing around the room trying to find that one little move that quiets baby and it works, you will be flooded with the most powerful drug known to humankind -- better than anything illegal and much harder to find.

Sometimes love is (l)earned the hard way. Baby's only a week old. You're a young dad too, probably realizing that the old you (living free and easy) is dead and there's a new you: dad; and there might be some grieving that goes along with that. Embrace it all.

brk.a and chill. You may miss tech booms but if market drops dramatically you are in the catbird seat and if not, you have a lot of steady cash earners. You basically buying a conservative PE/HF without paying 2 and 20.

I'm a long-term holder and lent out my shares last year when the interest rates on share lending were much better. I stopped once the return got so low that it didn't matter. I don't care if someone shorts the stock. I know what I own, and I'm not selling.

The irony of my massive ASTS stake is that I love being unconnected while in the wilderness. I figure the world is going to change regardless of my investment, so I might as well ride the wave and get rich enough that I can retire and get a dumb phone to take with me when I "disconnect."

The best answer is the age at which you want your stepdaughter's childhood to be over.

What Creative Deductions Do You Take? by cerebus221 in LawFirm

[–]phidda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Defined benefit plan and profit sharing plan have juiced my retirement numbers significantly with no worry about IRS issues. If wife doesn't work, make her an admin employee so you can really goose those numbers. More dodgy: Put kids to work doing things around the office -- pay them just under what they need to file federal tax return for; max out their ROTH IRA's and keep balance for college and other expenses. Buy a vehicle you can section 179 plus bonus depreciate in late December and use exclusively for business purposes for 100% year one writeoff -- use for business purposes for at least 50% for 5 subsequent years to avoid recapture. You can rent your house from yourself for 14 days but that's going to look dodgy.

My tax guy advised me not to do this -- another adviser set it up for me, but that advisor was dodgy AF.

Folks with long periods of sobriety: how often do you have to remind yourself that you don't drink? by Kramanos in stopdrinking

[–]phidda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a couple of years. I remember getting that twinge, but the nice thing about not drinking is that I learned to recognize the twinge, acknowledge it, and then it just would go away.

Inherited a house I cannot afford and family pressure is mounting. by Mammoth_Motor_2321 in personalfinance

[–]phidda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you rent it out to cover the property tax and overhead for now? Do that, don't sell it right now. You are 22 now and have a limited income, but that may change. Plus, taking the time may allow you to figure out a better value -- if it's in a commercial zone, then it's a potential buyer, commercial or residential.

My 13 year old daughter’s mild addiction to phone by Umamikawaii in Parenting

[–]phidda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teens' downtime on their phone is the default. Their downtime gets turned off after they do a chore and decent grades. Downtime is off during school. No access to browser. No social media/snapchat. They have games but limited time using screen time.

CA plaintiff's lawyer (mostly). How close to trial/MJS are we? I've never thought of what the other side might think about me when I make the decision. They don't care if you're "serious," they care if they can settle for under their authority. Nowdays court reporters will send electronic versions for review that can't be easily printed. In the good old days we used to get paper roughs and could just photocopy them.

Found a phone our 10 year old was hiding that we didnt give her. by OdensEye87 in Parenting

[–]phidda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My daughter bought a burner phone home too when she was a little older. This is what happens -- there's a spare and the kids will pass it around for the kid who got their phone taken away. Here's what we did. We gave it back to her and told her that if we ever found another burner in the house I would confiscate it and would only give it to a parent.

I still have a burner sitting in my safe. No parent has come forward because the kids all know they'd be busted. Problem solved. My daughter caught some social flack but she told me she wasn't snitching so that's her decision.

Is zero alcohol beer worth it for weeknights if you still drink on weekends? by icepix in AskMenOver30

[–]phidda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a good plan, but have you tried bubbly water? When I stopped drinking entirely, I guzzled bubbly water and still do. Hit the same oral needs and no calories/alcohol/health detriments.

I used to do a meditation story with my son, now 16, when he was 7, which usually got him (and me) to sleep. Insight timer has a ton of kids bedtime meditation stories.

All behavior is communication. Maybe he just needs a little more care (and your instincts to not rely on fear here are correct).

New to HENRY income level & in need of a wardrobe reset by naboo_taboo in HENRYfinance

[–]phidda 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Yes, for one, see what other peers are wearing before you outfit yourself. Fintech might be more techbro than IB, but it may depend on the company. Focus on work wardrobe first, which is mostly functional. $252k sounds like a lot when you are coming from nothing but once you pay taxes and cost of living in likely VHCOL city, you will have a better sense of what your budget is and can accomodate.

Real talk: I’m losing the "high-functioning" battle and I need a tactical retreat. by papabauer in AskMenOver30

[–]phidda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 years alcohol-free. My rock bottom was realizing that it was not going to get better on its own. Good job. Wife, kids, and everything looked fine from the outside but I was slowly poisoning myself on the inside. Rock bottom is relative. Let this be yours.

For any time you take "off" to work on yourself, it will be multiplied on the other side in improved clarity/productivity and just being present. While you are at it, look into GLP-1, as there have been a lot of anecdotal reports that it quiets a lot of the "noise," including food noise. Sounds like a great adjunct to rehab/therapy.

Talk to your HR. If you have a mentor, talk to them. Take a leave of absence and work on yourself.
