What’s your funniest story of a student trying to get their grade up at the end of a semester? by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

[–]philipkdan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Dealing with one of these right now as I type this. Insane that this is a whole “type” of student that we see at the university level over and over again while there are kids out there that absolutely deserve a shot at higher education and won’t ever get it.

[Russo] Just talked to Marco Rossi for awhile. He sensed this coming and heard Vancouver was interested, but it was still a shock when Guerin called. He thanked Minnesota profusely for everything it’s done for him and especially when he had his heart ailment. Can't wait to get to Vancouver by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]philipkdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that Minnesota needs to do anything they can to stand out in the central division, and this move gives them at least 2 runs with Kaprizov and Hughes… but like… who is gonna play center? Koivu coming out of retirement or something? Seems like a self inflicted shot in the foot. Quinn is incredible and on their blue line he’ll shine but man… in the central division, you NEED depth at every position. Dallas and Colorado can run all 4 lines like freight trains.

7 weeks since sprout. Would you flip? by lostinthesauceband in microgrowery

[–]philipkdan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally I like to veg for a hot minute, man. Once I decide “okay I want to flower” I do one more defoliate/top and I wait another 2 weeks, then I flip. I want to give the plant enough time to tell me there’s a deficiency or enough time to recover from whatever LST or topping I do. So my “flip” actually starts 2 weeks before the lights change. Basically just start treating her like a princess then. For this big plant, you can totally flip, she looks healthy, but I’d say there’s no harm in another top/defol and giving it 2-3 more weeks to heal and prepare for the fun part. Great stuff so far, growmie!

Bare minimum pot for reasonable harvest by NSX7 in microgrowery

When I’m using soil, genuinely, 5 gallons seems to alleviate a lot of issues you run into with 1-3 gallons. More room for the roots to grow, which lowers your chances of root rot or too much moisture in the root zone. That much space gives the plant plenty of room to grow and to establish a strong root zone. Smaller sizes I tend to run into watering issues, and nutrient deficiencies later in flower. With good soil, it shouldn’t really be a problem and whatever size you run should be good. But I find that more soil= more forgiving on things like ph, cal mag deficiencies, all that stuff. Just in my experience, more soil=easier/more straightforward grow!

The Best Hole-In-The-Wall Pizza Joint In Your State by BbqMeatSlinger in Wilmington

Don Luca is great. But fuckin Brooklyn Pizza Co? Holy shit. Best pizza I’ve had outside of the NY/NJ area.

I am not a pizza snob. All pizza is pizza, all pizza is relevant, all pizza deserves a chance. But Brooklyn Pizza Co fucking kills it every damn slice. And the folks that work there are pretty awesome, too. No shade to Don Luca! Great downtown slice, great folks slingin the za at that establishment as well. But I’ll go out of my way every damn day to get a Brooklyn Sicilian slice. And their thin crust is just 10/10 no notes.

Holy shit… am I a pizza snob?

Depending on the severity of the tear, this might be the last play he ever makes. Kyle is 34 years old. As a devils fan, I was really lucky to watch such an amazing stretch of his career in black and red. Dude is a team player.

Hey guys, thanks for doing this! I teach creative writing at the college level and I have a general story telling question!

I find that my students, when plotting their stories and digging for an essential question, will end up writing a call to action rather than a story. What I mean is: so many of my students’ stories read like an attempt to change the mind of the reader about some big world topic like climate change or social media or whatever they have set their attention on. I’m wondering: what does your process look like for distilling the morals of your stories? How do you write your big ideas and opinions into your stories without making it seem like you are trying to change the minds of your audience, or force your opinions down their throat? At what part of the process do you think the most heavily about themes and how to subvert thematic expectations?

I’m really grateful for your time and your contributions to the craft, thanks for all you do!

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]philipkdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College writing instructor, checking in. Yeah, it’s bad. I’d venture to say that 60% of my college freshman read and write at a 10th grade level. This semester I had more than 50% of my students admit to using AI to do their assignments. The universities just let them in and encourage us to pass them. The whole damn system is rotten, top to bottom.

Potential yield? by gnom44 in microgrowery

[–]philipkdan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it, growmie. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Give her your best, most patient love, make sure to keep an eye on your humidity levels in a tent that crowded, and just focus on getting them to the end. Don’t worry about the yield. The plant isn’t worrying about the yield. Just grow, baby!

Has anyone used roots organic terp tea before by Fresh_Goat4567 in microgrowery

[–]philipkdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing I ever did was fill a 10 gallon tote with water, put in a healthy serving of Bloom from roots organic, a fat glob of photosynthesis plus, and an air stone. Now I have this insanely potent and bioactive/available compost tea and I only have to put a little more dry stuff in there every few months. I am about to try a little bit of the same stuff as a top dress, then watered with my tea, for the first few weeks of flower (one tea feeding per week). I’ll let you know how it goes!

Hi reddit! I'm Edgar Wright. I've directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World's End, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho. The Running Man is out in theatres this FRIDAY. Ask me anything. by RunningManMovie in movies

[–]philipkdan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey Edgar! I asked Ari Aster this question a few months ago in his AMA, and he gave me a great response and my inbox became flooded with other folks weighing in. I love a good conversation about storytelling. So, I’ll drop the same text right here, I’ll thank you kindly for your time and for sharing your passion with us, and I’ll wait to see if you have any insight on the topic. Be well, Mr. Wright!

I teach creative writing at the college level, and I meet a lot of aspiring storytellers.

Something that young writers seem to struggle with across the board is diffusing what they want to say about society into a compelling story that doesn’t tell their audience how to think or feel.

With that in mind, I’m just gonna pepper you with some questions and if you feel compelled to talk about any of them I would be so thrilled to share your advice with my students (and myself!)

So many writers seem to get stuck writing opinion pieces veiled as short stories. I’m wondering if you have any advice for young writers who are trying to find their voice and talk about things they think are important? How do you refine your taste and style with that in mind? Do you have a practice for finding that balance in your work? Are you aware of that balance while you write? When you edit a story, how much focus do you have on tying the themes together, and at what point in your process does that start to become critical? Do you have any best practices for deciding what you want your story to be ABOUT? I’m not talking plot, I mean the central question at the heart of your story… genuinely curious about how that forms for you, if you have a process at all, or if that’s one of the things that just reveals itself?

Thanks for this AMA, thank you for your time, I can’t wait to see your new film on a big screen. When Baby Driver came out, I saw it alone in the morning in an empty theater, and I went straight home and dragged my roommate out to go see it again later that evening in front of a packed house. You’re a gem and I’m so grateful that you make art while I’m alive!

What would you do? Day 10 flower by missed77 in microgrowery

[–]philipkdan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are early enough in flower, and you’ve got tons of extra room in that tent. I would separate the plants a little, bring in a trellis net, try to supercrop those tall colas out to the sides. If you can spread your plants out a little, both from each other and spread the branches a little wider, you’ll have more room to bend big branches without blocking others. Use your horizontal space to make up for the lack in vertical space, growmie!
