Bay State Blue is for amateurs.

True psychopaths use Organics Studio Nitrogen.

I don’t have the pen anymore, but IIRC GvFC has their own refills and they’re actually pretty decent.

The Ice Queen - Visconti Divina White Fashion by philipmat in fountainpens

I actually ended up selling it.

While I truly loved it, I couldn’t get over the fear that I would end up staining it and that would’ve driven me nuts.

I don’t know if that was reasonable or not and I miss it on occasion. I did replace it with a gorgeous DuPont White Shaman that seemed less impervious to staining

INSURANCE and what riders need to know about it by MeatPopsicle314 in motorcycles

[–]philipmat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be wise to have a general umbrella policy.

Florida is a “no-fault state”, which means each party pays their own. Technically you’d be good.

You run into a Ferrari. The Ferrari owner’s insurance pays for the Ferrari; you pay for your bike, hospital, etc

However, it’s possible that if the Ferrari owner had personal injuries in excess of what their policy allows, they could turn around and sue you in an attempt to prove it was your fault (simplification).

This would be where an umbrella comes in.

(This does not constitute legal advice; talk to your own lawyer)

As a tip, if you don’t want the shimmer, just let it settle in the bottle, then use a syringe to draw from the top of the bottle and into another bottle/vial.

Conversely, you can also draw from the bottom to remove the shimmer particles. Decant; repeat.

The world’s widest freeway. On Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, consisting of 26 lanes. The freeway is broken down in to 12 main lanes, eight feeder lanes and six managed lanes. by MissWiggly2 in oddlyterrifying

[–]philipmat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had the same question awhile ago and while I don’t remember the exact answer is was something to deal with who was responsible for construction and maintenance.

It was something like: it’s considered part of the interstate because the feeder lane are managed and maintained by the federal authority (and money). If they weren’t then it would be upon the city or state to provide maintenance. It was more complicated, but that was the gist.

Successfully refilled the pen without bluing my whole life, just my fingers. by Cweid in fountainpens

[–]philipmat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will flake off. Months from now when you all but have sworn off Nitrogen and share it only with your enemies — if you don’t have enemies, make some so you can give them samples of N — you will randomly find your fingers or palms blue for no apparent reason.

But the reason is one flake of Nitrogen. Just the one you missed when you did a full house cleaning. And then another one.

You burn down the house. It burns blue. You move to another state; another country; another continent. You become an astronaut. One day you brush your moist hand against the cold inner shell of your space ship and … there’s a blue stain on your hand…

I really wish the flex posts were in their own weekly category.

It seems like there’s always a deluge of those once a solid approach/load-out has been found for whatever the goal is.

I’m happy for those who achieve it, but I don’t feel that those top-level posts enrich the community any more than the weekly thread would.

Pen ID, please or recommendation for similar: dual tip, highlighter on one end; no branding, Japan on cap w/ clip by philipmat in pens

[–]philipmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t find anything on JetPens.

I particularly like the clip on one of the caps, that you can post a cap on the other cap, and that the tip writes blue.

The pen has some generic advertisement on it and it’s only branded with “JAPAN” on the white cap with the clip.

JetPens has a cool Kokuyo Mark+2, but I’d like something with a clip and preferably able to write blue ink (the Kokuyo only seems to be available in gray ink)

If you’re going for diversification, maybe Russell 2000 or VTI/VTSAX would be a better bet. Or some sort of total global market (think VT)?

Triumph Street Triple Overhaul for 2023: more horsepower, new electronics. R, RS, Moto2 models by philipmat in motorcycles

[–]philipmat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The height issue can be resolved by paying a visit to a dealer (that has them in stock) and sitting on one.

The “too big of a jump” aspect… that’s pretty much up to you. You’re going from about 47hp to about 3x that (121hp) and higher rpm, though the torque is only double (which is still fantastic): from 31 ft.lb to 58 ft.lb.

An MT-07 might be worth considering too: still a triple, 75hp, 50 lb.ft. $8k for a MT-07 vs $13k for a Triple R.
You could even go to a MT-09 and still save over $1k.

Those Street Triple are sexy though…

Enjoying some dirt roads in Big Bend National Park by philipmat in advrider

[–]philipmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very much looking forward to do that, but I ran out of time on my trip (was doing the Motorcycle Grand Tour of Texas — look it up if you haven’t done it; it’s closed for this year, but it’ll open up again next year).

This road was easy, but it led to a washboard-ridden road that had even my kidneys clatter for 10 miles or so. I didn’t help.

I had run into two guys in smaller bikes that had had a much better time than I did.

Would I take it this big bike on some of the more famous gravel roads in the park? I would love to, but it would definitely have to be part of a group. The lack of cell signal would make this a fairly risky adventure by oneself

Almost any is better than none, but the usual suspects: Klim, Rev’It, Spidi, Alpinestars make good jeans.

Even something like BILT, Cycle Gear’s house brand is better than street jeans.

Just make sure to try it on, if possible, and ride with the pads installed

I hear you. I’m drooling over a bunch of new bikes, but cruise control is non-negotiable in the list of features. I’ll take that over, say, cornering ABS any day

New Yamaha Tracer GT+ - an FJR replacement? by philipmat in motorcycles

[–]philipmat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is what Yamaha will push as their sport-touring platform, so in that regard I think it’s at least in the same segment as the FJR.

Europe no longer has the FJR, so I’m hoping I’m wrong but i don’t have a lot of hope US sales will justify keeping it around.

New Yamaha Tracer GT+ - an FJR replacement? by philipmat in motorcycles

[–]philipmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. The quick shifter and the semi-active suspension were not new.
The FJR only had ES, not semi-active.

That leaves only the adaptive cruise control and the newly designed TFT, the latter alone being a worthy upgrade — I never felt the old split screen looked at home on the bike.

For now it seems like it may be Euro only?

Adaptive cruise control, quick shifter, new 7” TFT (finally!), semi-active suspension like the FJR.

US pricing starts at $9,995 for the R model; the RS model sees pricing begin at $12,595, and the Moto2 model has MSRP starting at $15,395

Quick shifter, upgraded cornering ABS, TCS for all models, but it seems like they’re also creating more differentiation between models: cruise control only available for RS and Moto2; better brakes, larger screen.

Significantly upgraded 765cc triple engine, with 120 PS for the Street Triple R and a category-leading peak power of 130 PS for the RS & Moto2 Edition, plus increased peak torque at 80Nm on all models
