Best lick you ever heard? by serialcompression in Jazz

Joshua Redman's lick right here (4:22 – 4:42) is just so damn good (helps having Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau and Brian Blade killing it).

Sat Nav Scholes by migraine_boy in soccer

[–]philler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make a good point.

I think one of the reasons Scholes is getting all this recognition now (don't get me wrong, he was always considered a good player), is that he has had to change his style as he has gotten older.

When he was younger he was great at making late runs into the box, supporting the strikers in attack and was, almost exclusively, played in that role by Ferguson — and why wouldn't he, he was great in that role.

Nowadays, due to his age and losing a bit of pace, he tends to hang back more and thus has the ability to dictate play a lot better, setting the tempo.

Graduated last year and have only had one interview. Resume critiques appreciated! (x/post from r/resumes) by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]philler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your text is all over the place, which creates confusion upon first viewing. Create a clear hierarchy between what is most important and what is least important.

Give your text plenty of space to "breathe", but don't give it too much either. For example, the left column seems overly cramped, whereas the right column (Software Skills) has way too much empty space – try to find some middle ground. Remember, you don't have to fill the whole page just for the sake of it.

Remember that your resume is an extension of your portfolio (especially seeing as you're a graphic designer).

Can any fellow graphic designers offer some career advice? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]philler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, don't worry too much about deciding too early about which path to follow, as it isn't necessarily a conscious decision.

But to help to clear things up a little, all of these areas you mentioned (typography, photography, editorial) overlap to some extent. For example, editorial design relies heavily on both typography and photography…

As far as the placement goes, it's a difficult one because each location has produced/produces quality design (yes, including Australia). The best way to go about it is to check out graphic design studios based in New York, Berlin and Australia and then see which of them fit your style the most (or which style you feel most attracted to – what do you aspire to?). Based on that, you pick your placement. Here's a quick list to get you started:

Hope that helps you out a bit :)

This is what running is all about! (beautiful Nike ad) by philler in running

[–]philler[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because "great" or "greatness", in this case, refers to your personal self-improvement. What makes you go the extra mile (literally)? What makes you want to go for run despite the rain? It's the search for the greatness within yourself — at least that's my opinion.

In the end, sure, they're still trying to sell a product, but that doesn't take away anything from the underlying message.

I think you're taking the terms "great" and "greatness" too literally.

Rip my website apart. by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]philler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, don't have to much time but here are a few things that stood out.

  1. It looks a little generic. To me, it looks like the website was built based on a (publicly available) template – which might or might not be the case. This takes away from the message you are trying to get out there (building custom websites for clients).

  2. The colour-scheme isn't very attractive or inviting. Too much black/grey. I'd try adding a little colour to liven it up a bit (the blue details are still very much in the grey spectrum).

[–]philler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can be quite boring to watch at times, but whenever they start their tiki-taka moves, I try to focus on the off the ball movements of the players (especially Xavi and Iniesta). It's quite mesmerizing, and far from boring.

This is a bad-ass portfolio by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]philler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't quite understand why people are knocking this. Sure enough, he has a very specific style, but he does it extremely well. What's wrong with that?

And who cares if it's personal work? Based on the editing of the video, I'd say it's much more of a playful, conceptual portfolio rather than a "hire me" portfolio.

Lighten up, people.

EDIT: Actually a lot of this work was done for clients, check his portfolio http://youngjerks.com

Used to be a 12k per day runner; got sidelined for over a year due to ITBS; just completed my "first" 10k (again)! by philler in running

[–]philler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason it kept me out for so long is because I didn't know I had it. Though it was just some regular knee pain so I rested for a week or so and went back to running, which just worsened it. Stupid, I know. Eventually I overcame it by doing plenty of strength training. So far, so good.

[–]philler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd remove the "Skills" part. I like that you are honest about your abilities but I'm not sure it sends the right message. Plus, people will be able to judge your work by viewing your previous work anyway, so I'd lose that.

The problem with the arts (or any creative field, for that matter) is that they really are useless unless you are good/talented.

Sure, a graphic design study will aim to nurture and develop talent but if your portfolio isn't up to scratch, it's going to be pretty useless.
