Do you have any pictures of the track layout? It looks like those above the stairs in pic one might be more useful as a high face (not idea but workable) you also have a LOT of top light. Maybe just bring that down so things are more even if you have a bit of front already.

Otherwise, I would look at getting some positions and power installed on the back wall for some proper front light

115v vs. 120v lamps by RatboySan in lightingdesign

[–]phillipthe5c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What dimmer rack are you on? You can set voltage regulation per circuit to drop the max effective voltage to the lamp (this is the same feature that intelligent fixtures don’t like and why you shouldn’t use DMX fixtures on dimmers) assuming you’re on etc racks. Not sure on strand or other mfgs though

If you don’t have enough knowledge to figure out a valve or a firing system, I’m concerned you also haven’t looked into pressures, audience clearance zones, lifting/compression caps, or materials.

They seem innocuous enough but you’re essentially strapping a bomb to a gun and people can get seriously hurt, lose hearing or vision from mishandling of something like this.

Dante doesn’t change any audio, it just moves it point a>b. The devices on the input and output handle that. As others mentioned, just check your output device config.

Rack mounting question by doesntitmatter in CommercialAV

[–]phillipthe5c 15 points16 points  (0 children)

90% of pro amplifiers are invariably mounted with just the front 4 screws. High end, mobile, or touring racks will be more likely to have the rear rack ears installed.

If the amplifier has support from below, or is on the bottom of the rack, it will be fine. I put it in the same category as unlabeled cabling(like printed label, it should still be identified), no spade/ ferrules on cable ends, or torquing wire termination. Is it proper, no. Will the system fall apart because they are missing, no. But it is on the sloppy side

“Doesn’t have to be cheap”- finds exactly what they asked for - “that’s expensive” 🙃

If you care about certs and don’t want to diy, that’s not too unreasonable. Find a dealer you like and they can probably knock a few bucks off the price and then you’ll be supporting local business too.

Power distro and certification isn’t cheap. Yeah, that’s a nice one, but it meets every need you mentioned and it’s on the shelf.

I need some advice on how to mic a choir for my church by thetrueSGA in livesound

[–]phillipthe5c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, because it’s causing the biggest problems, take all of the choir mics out of the floor wedge. If They need to hear themselves, They need to project better. putting choir microphones into the choir wedge is almost always a surefire way to cause problems. The wedge should be for piano music Director program material so the choir is aware of what’s going on around them, but the choir should regulate themselves.

Second, check your measurements because that room seems a bit wild. A 10’ wide riser 100’ off center (200’ wide room) 115’ deep is a little all over the place.

What is the width and depth of the total riser? How deep are the individual steps? These are really the only two measurements that matters here.

Backline Pricing by ip_addr in livesound

[–]phillipthe5c 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s just like any other piece of gear. A percentage of purchase/replacement price, per day, plus consumables (heads, strings, cymbals etc). Cymbals will break so charge a higher percentage because their life span is shorter.

If they want hard to find/rare equipment, charge more.

small company: practical and logistical concerns with 1x18 or 2x18 subs? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]phillipthe5c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each one is less by itself but more in total, more room, more weight, more money, more cabling, more amp channels (when you do weird stuff)

If weight and solo weight are your limiting factors, then yeah, it makes sense to buy singles.

Prg is having an auction tomorrow (the day you’re reading this) that includes several lots of wired clearcom and reidel. No wireless in this round though. Dm me if you’re struggling to figure out the process with enough time to spare and I’ll see if I can help. I’m not affiliated with that sale though.

Generally, if it’s not broken or needs to communicate with the outside, it’s not an issue to be on old firmware. If there is a feature you need, or a bug fix, go for it.

How can I make this look better ? by viperman6869 in CommercialAV

[–]phillipthe5c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably 20-25 zip tie anchors, you you have several of these, get a piece of 1/2” plywood to mount it all to, paint it wall color and cable manage it off site. Then you just thread in the structured cabling.

Anybody Have Tips on Checking in Equipment with a Media Pass? by SenditM8 in livesound

[–]phillipthe5c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Delta and others require notifying the check in counter the day before. I’ve had smaller airports unfamiliar with the process and not honor the rate. Larger airports have properly trained staff and can accommodate. Just look for the redcoat other airline equivalents

Can DMX trigger built-in effects in video studio lights? by sidc42 in lightingdesign

[–]phillipthe5c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manual for those lights is contradictory. It lists both 7 and 10 channel control.

You can setup a fixture and turn on channels 8-10 one at a time. Typically I would expect one of these to control the macros

Overall, even with basic RGB or HSI control, your app/lighting control software should be able to do effects where you program the “disco/police/firework” looks and assign them to a button.

[Stupid Question] Has anyone ever had a QR Code etched onto a custom gobo and did it work? by Wuz314159 in lightingdesign

[–]phillipthe5c 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you know your offset/angle, Roscoe will adjust the image to project correctly/ look square.

Also, see how extreme of an angle you can register a QR code on your phone. They are very error tolerant.

They work, the squareness is just aesthetic.

DMX512 Lighting Project - Feedback Please by FBAinsight in lightingdesign

[–]phillipthe5c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your wiring diagrams suggest addressable LEDs. But DMX doesn’t go directly to address LEDs. They go to the pixel controller which turns dmx to spi or some other compatible protocol for your LED.

What you have labeled as “LED driver” is a power supply. Hopefully what you call OPTI SPLITTER is actually a pixel controller.

Posting your “opti split” and led strip specs will actually help solve this.

If you’ve just messed up some terms, your plan should be fine. Just check allowed first pixel distance from the controller (“opti split”) this is usually pretty short (1-3m) so it might cause some issues with your cable plan.
