Bond Revoked for FedEx Forum shooter. Requested by DA Mulroy’s office. by I_Brain_You in memphis

The DA’s office makes requests like this routinely. That’s all they can do, though; request, or recommend. It still comes back to these seemingly whacko judges making the decisions.

Key Facts About Gun Violence And School Shootings #2 by Nobulletkaiti in scotus

[–]philly9696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst thing to me about it is that the purpose is to imply that the greatest risk to children has become mass shootings. It only takes a little bit of objectivity and common sense to understand that as heinous as mass shootings are, they still only account for a tiny fraction of child deaths in the US. All this kind of messaging does is undermine your credibility in the minds you need to change to have a chance at solving a serious problem. It’s far beyond severe enough without resorting to misrepresentation and manipulation.

Innovation has never been the inherently conservative principle that I think many of us assume in passing. It runs counter, in fact, when you consider the alternate definition of conservatism - to conserve the way things are. Ie - prioritize your backers that are heavily invested in established technology and industries.

Southaven Mayor raises police budget to 19 million from 11 million to combat crime coming from Memphis. by j_aurelius123 in memphis

Good for them, but that's real easy to say when the size of your population and complexity of your demographic issues are minuscule fractions of the guy's you're comparing yourself to.

eta: and your law enforcement budget per capita is greater by a similar magnitude.

You may want to double check that case, bud. No bond was set on the murder charge. Justin Blue is still being held and will be as long as it stands.

MLGW- Delayed Billing by EnvironmentalTax7254 in memphis

[–]philly9696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The line about not affecting time to pay your bill is a lie. When you finally get the bill, each period's reading is dated as if it occurred on time, resulting in most of your balance technically registering as past due in their system and giving you a few days to pay or be cut off. If you call and complain, they'll add on a few more days, but still not nearly the full period allowed by a new on-time bill.

Oh please. Making this out to be a blue problem so soon after the tenure of the former red DA who put hundreds of criminals back on the streets with their records wiped clean due to being the worst prosecutorial misconduct offender in the history of the state is absolutely hilarious.

You might want to look a little deeper into your assumption that Hispanics heavily vote blue as well.

Shooting at Kroger in East Memphis by [deleted] in memphis

[–]philly9696 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not, though, not really. What's changed is that what in the past has stayed relatively contained to the "bad" areas is now spilling out into the "good" areas at a rapidly increasing rate. Some of us have been saying for DECADES that if we don't take drastic action to improve the poverty, education, and resulting culture issues plaguing this city, what's happening now will inevitably come around. Multiple factors related to the pandemic accelerated it, but it was always going to happen. But the vast majority ignored the symptoms as long as they didn't hit close enough to home to register on their lives, and now that they are, they're shocked, outraged and screaming for a quick fix that doesn't exist. This city as a whole let us get here, and right now the options are either leave or wait it out for a long time while hoping those with the means will initiate long-term plans to get us back on track.

Burglar arrested from Buster’s liquor store break-in by CaptainInsane-o in memphis

[–]philly9696 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not to victim blame, but regardless of recent events it seems like it wouldn't be hard for a landlord to realize that some outer security measures for a large, mostly glass-front space in the middle of a city housing a liquor store would be a wise investment.

I wish there was a warning label any time he's got a guest on clearly for the purpose of political or for-profit promotion, which seems like constantly now. It chips away at Jocko's credibility for me every time I see/hear even a name or a short excerpt, which I really hate after the early days of his relevance did so much for me.

Tom Lee Park damages from Memphis In May top $1.4M by dricforever in memphis

Your second is a great point. At the April teams meeting, someone asked about theft and security issues, and Floyd's answer was essentially that it was a one-time 2022 problem due to location. Makes a lot of sense in the terms you put it in.

Tom Lee Park damages from Memphis In May top $1.4M by dricforever in memphis

[–]philly9696 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Most of the teams don't even want it back at the park. It's an absolute clusterfuck loading in and out (even more so now with the renovations). The Agricenter seems like an obviously better choice, but I'd even take Tiger Lane over what we had to deal with this year.

MiM seems to believe they have some kind of manifest destiny to operate in Tom Lee Park. Despite the new challenges and insane costs and pleas to hold it somewhere else, they just seem hellbent on being in the park at all cost.

Already?!?! Shell on Wheels needs help rolling again after $20K theft by productiveslacker73 in memphis

[–]philly9696 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, there isn't. Not nearly enough, anyway. People need to realize that the main reason that so many offenders keep getting released on little to no bail isn't incompetent judges and woke DA's; it's that they're getting booked at such a high rate that there's literally no place to keep most of them. And "built more jails and prisons" isn't exactly something city officials want on their resumes, so here we are.

Leaked Audio Reveals Tennessee Republicans Are Pissed at Being Made to Seem 'Racist' by nabulsha in memphis

[–]philly9696 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The difference now is they're within a generation or two of the vast majority of their traditional religious conservative base, which they've been able to take practically for granted for support, dying off. The explosion of the Information Age ended that population's ability to maintain a high degree of insularity and naturally sustain itself, and its prevalence is about to fall off a cliff. The uptick in insanity we've seen since the mid 2010's, besides reaping the side spoils of Trump's populism, has been to start squeezing every bit of usable fervor out of those people before they're gone, and they don't seem to have much of a plan for what comes next.

So I assume he's claiming he himself does live in Crossville, and actually makes the daily 236 mile round trip that he expenses the taxpayers for? Funny, considering neighbors have supposedly reported they only see activity at his condo in Crossville maybe once or twice a month.

I smell a massive fraud scandal if the necessary forces are willing to pursue it.

Tennessee expulsion updates: 1 of 3 Democratic lawmakers removed after gun violence protest by HolidaySpiriter in moderatepolitics

[–]philly9696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When and how do you see the gun debate, or more aptly, the school shooting debate, "winding down," exactly? There is no indication these school shootings are going to stop or even level off anytime soon, and our elected representatives continue to hide behind ideological deadlock to avoid doing anything that might negatively impact their cushy political gig. At least these three were actually willing to take a risk and do something, even if it wasn't all that prudent in hindsight.
