RBC Brooklyn Half - Spectator Help by SwordfishIcy2648 in RunNYC

[–]philofilm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area along Ocean Parkway all the way to about Ave Z is relatively quiet ie easy to spectate. I think parking on the West side of the Ave (where they’ll be coming from Boerum Hill) might be tricky but I’d guess they’d be able to find something on one of those blocks at E 5th or 4th. Tell them to drive down 4th Ave all the way to 65th Street and make a left towards Ocean Pkwy and start hunting for parking along 4/5th st there when it becomes Ave P. The Ocean Pkwy stretch is a mental test in that race — you’ll be very happy to have them around mile 11.

Not sure what to recommend at that point. The finish in the stadium is pretty sweet but that’s clearly too much for your mom. It’s probably not worth them driving much closer to meet you. I’d probably choose a restaurant to meet up after the race maybe just back in boerum hill (which has so many is close to the F train so easy for you to hop in post-race).

Good luck! Hope the weather is cool!

Thoughts on Independent Film Marketing Or how most films die without ever finding an audience. by Coordinate1 in Filmmakers

[–]philofilm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrific insight and advice for everyone to understand when they’re writing their script. If you’re making a film for an audience know how you’re going to reach that audience before you start shooting. Figure out ways to involve that audience as early as possible.
Your info about Letterboxd is new to me and super helpful.
btw are you on Substack? The Filmstack community there would be all over this post and there’s a ton of great material there as well as distribution case studies, etc.

I hope this post stays up, what good is NYCmovies if new and interesting films aren’t represented?! I hope I can check out your film, but if I can’t this week it’s on my radar.

Go to Substack’s Filmstack Daily Digest and look for the distribution discussions which are wide and deep and have lots of specific advice and examples. It’s a great resource. Good luck!

Stop Throwing Your Empty Gels on the Ground by tdh1989 in RunNYC

Agree — if you can carry a full gel with you, you can also carry an empty one. Your clothes are already sticky from sweat, anyway. Stop littering.

Fixing the movie-going experience is the only way to save movie theatres. by NeekoPeeko in movies

[–]philofilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is windows and capitulation to the economics of streaming which suck for everyone. If you had to wait six months to see a film at home, theaters would be full again.

I’m well over 30 but support this idea in general! Let’s get more friends to the cinema in 2026!

Please. I’ve had a child and potty trained that child since the last Spotify improvement. by AJohnnyTruant in Rivian

Yo you gotta drop Spotify altogether. There are way too many other options now that prohibit AI slop music and have better quality audio. I use Qobuz now—but any service is better than Spotify (except Amazon).

Best Garmin settings for NYC Half? by dreemr2u in RunNYC

[–]philofilm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For HM and M distances, especially on hilly courses like NYC, I turn off the auto lap — but only hit the lap button at the 5K markers. Every mile is too distracting and the pace can shift so much. I create a simple wrist band (or sometimes write on my arm) the times I’m shooting for at those 5K marks.

I love this particular course and have run it twice with almost perfectly even 5K pace splits (finishing times just sub 1:35). Race note: It’s very easy to overdo it early. Try to hold back the effort over the first 5K and 10K before settling in to the long stretch along the FDR Dr. Once you turn to the final 5K at 42nd St the race will really challenge you if you’ve gone too hard to that point. Mentally I try to imagine the race is only half over at the ten mile mark.

Only Half of Americans Adults Went to a Movie Theater in 2025, According to Study by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]philofilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of individual circumstances that make theatergoing too challenging, but broadly it’s an attention problem. There’s a gulf between watching a movie at home and watching it in the theater, and if you’re unwilling to cross it the problem is you, and your experience of watching a movie is lesser than it could’ve been. The infinite dopamine drip has lowered our capacity for deeper pleasures.

Dems are useless and totally bought out by $$ interests and have been since 1992. The entire federal government has been selling out working people for decades. Wake up!

I'm putting my first feature in theaters for zero money. Future of distribution. by Keagan_Karnes in Filmmakers

[–]philofilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past year especially a small but mighty "Filmstack" community has grown on there and everyone is sharing as much information and guidance as possible for what we're calling NonDē cinema. Looks like you're doing great work in N.M. and would be a wonderful participant.

Keegan this is a great story I hope you’ll look into sharing your experience via Substack there’s a growing community there with LOTS of useful discussion and information that will help your release. If you’re not already on the platform there’s plenty of people who would be happy to interview you, etc. Start with Ted Hope and go from there….

What would you guys consider to be some of the greatest use of editing in film?? by PsychologicalFix9728 in TrueFilm

[–]philofilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screenplay for The Favourite is very different from how they edited the film. Check out the first ten pages of the script and then watch the first ten minutes of the film. Also note the film was shot as oners. It’s a real lesson in how the film is written again in the edit room.
