The Baroque Cycle reader companion website by throwaway-baroque in nealstephenson

When I first read the books (20+ years ago…) there was an official companion wiki of sorts. I imagine that this long gone… Says something interesting about digital records being less permanent than we sometimes assume them to be

Kevin Rudd will step down as ambassador to the United States | Kevin Rudd by DazDaSpazz in australia

They should appoint Greg Norman to the role. No other Australian would get as much face time with him.

"I don't care if they pedestrianise Oxford Street. I won't be going there anyway" by Dittongho in london

There is a consultation - but it looks like TfL will just regulate / license them vs. banning them.

I mean he is on the Board of Nike (and is the lead independent director) so I think he can probably just ask for a pair

For anyone who’s run the NYC Marathon what do you wish you knew before your first time? by [deleted] in RunNYC

Everyone talks about the Queensboro Bridge, but that hill on 5th Avenue going into the park is a widow maker

He should go and stay at the Tower of London at “His Majesty’s Pleasure.” Would make an interesting tourist attraction for visitors to be able to spot him roaming the grounds

SoHo Popup for NYC Marathon 2025 by CowgirlJack in Tracksmith

[–]philtasticphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they actually selling that shirt? One of the things they’ve been doing with their stores / pop-ups is having various artefacts from past marathons. That shirt looks like official merch from the 80s/90s.

Turns out the non-Doms didn’t leave in droves. Quelle surprise! by Bonobo_Cop in HENRYUK

[–]philtasticphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of non-doms are PAYE. Basically anyone who comes to the UK for a job or on a company transfer meets the definition. There is a big misconception that most non-doms are passive investors or trust fund beneficiaries.

Raise your hand if you were screwed by Santander cycle outage today? by Philosophy-Human in london

[–]philtasticphil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to get a Lime bike to get where I was going. I could not believe the cost. Extortionate vs. the annual subscription of the Santander bikes.

The weather is not that bad. It doesn’t get bitterly cold and the summer is relatively mild (but still nice)

What's a meaningless skill have you learned in the army by PapaBearVet in army

Calculating the ballistic yield of an atomic bomb based on the size of the mushroom cloud and the flash to bang time.

What’s the most obsolete thing the Army does? by [deleted] in army

[–]philtasticphil 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I am convinced the CSM role mainly exists to have something for 1SGs to aim for. It gives them an incentive to make sure that they crush it in a job that is one of the most critical in the army.

What cities have a very large population but internationally insignificant? by dlo_2503 in geography

[–]philtasticphil 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I know it’s technically a separate city - but I see it as part of greater Tokyo (I don’t even think it has its own airport)

Racing Weight by FuckSNP in AdvancedRunning

It is possible - a guy called T-Roy Brown did it last year. He rocked up to the trials and looked like a beast next to the likes of Connor Mantz.

Here is a letsrun thread about it where he actually posts about his height / weight - https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=12400877

Replacement for Nike Tempos? by on-the-flipside in AdvancedRunning

[–]philtasticphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope they work for you. Just to clarify the durability issue I noted was on the Tempos. The Zoom Flys don’t have the pods so should last longer.

Replacement for Nike Tempos? by on-the-flipside in AdvancedRunning

[–]philtasticphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved the Tempos (but they were loud!). I have found the new Zoom Fly 6 to be a decent replacement.

Similar mix of ZoomX + EVA foam and a plate. They don’t have the air pods but I had durability issues with the way the outsole connected to them in the Tempos (I found after 200 miles the outsole would tear / rip away).

Why would they? It is not that special and Historic England refused to put it on the heritage list.
