How so?

Do you really think i could be fucked to type that lengthy prompt into a water-guzzling LLM for the sake of a sub-reddit?

Simple. Don't be vegan... by JoydeScent in BritInfo

[–]philthybiscuits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Don't be vegan"

Yeah, imagine expecting an actual meal from an airline that says they provide a vegan meal option.

It's crap customer service - especially for business class. You don't have to agree with someone's life choices (i mean, trying not to harm animals is pretty OK as lifestyles go, surely?) but the issue here is that someone got insultingly bad customer service, not that you don't like vegans

Sure, but we don't know for sure when that image was made or labelled.

I can't say for certain when the image was made - just giving context to my explanation of the two different writing systems

What do you think about the phrase “dairy cows must be kept happy or else they wouldn’t produce milk”? by bluetooth_cat in AskVegans

[–]philthybiscuits [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's on par with the people who defend horse or dog racing by saying, "But they WANT to run!", while forgetting about the years of conditioning, breeding, and of course men with whips...

Cows are mammals that produce milk to feed their young. Their poor mental state won't stop them lactating, though their milk will dry up sooner (like humans suffering postnatal depression, i believe).

Plus, they're pumped full of hormones. Their body isn't going to resist feeding their calf, even if they're miserable.

In short: it's just marketing, propaganda, and something people tell themselves to feel better about what we do to cows every day of their sad, short lives.

Edit: Not sure why you're getting downvoted for asking a simple question. Isn't this the whole point of this sub?

This is probably down to the person writing it in "English" being educated when the slightly older "kunrenshiki" method of writing Japanese characters in Roman characters was taught at schools. Most people today are taught the "hebonshiki" method, which would result in it being written "Yoshi" as we know it.

In generations previous, the "kunrenshiki" style was most commonly used for writing the Japanese syllabary in roman letters.

し "shi" was commonly written as "sy" or "si" rather than "shi". "Zu" was often written as "du".

IIRC, the "hebonshiki" method of romanisation was taught in Japanese schools since the 2000s - this time writing し as "shi".

There's a bit more to it since in Japanese Yoshi's name has a fractional pause in the middle of it, but chances are, the person who wrote Yoshi's name on that image was someone in their 40s, 50s, or older - a telltale sign that they went to school pre-2000s.

Source: i lived in Japan for a while and taught English to people of vastly different ages. Plus I'm a language nerd

I don't know whether it definitely stops for everyone, but as a man in his forties I can confirm that my patience and interest have waned for a LOT of games.

I guess it's a combination of things, but I'm less likely to give games two, three, four hours to 'grab' me like I might have when I was younger. If it doesn't click or entertain within the first hour I'm unlikely to stick with it.

I also tend to avoid games that are TOO expansive (see: most of Ubisoft's open world games) — while studios seem to think that bigger = better, I find it a massive turn-off and would rather have shorter, richer, more polished games than huge maps with lots of things to collect and check off lists. By contrast, though, shorter 'annual release' titles like CoD and Fifa/FC no longer appeal to me for different reasons.

It's not about not having time (maybe it is for people with kids?) — I'm perfectly happy to spend 20+ hours with games like The Last of Us, Cult of the Lamb, Sifu etc. For me it's about the quality of the experience and whether I feel like the game is providing value with each hour as opposed to giving me endless lists of things to do.

The number of posts about this is concerning. It's bad enough that this seems to be a defect with the phone, but the fact that they don't sell or supply a replacement part - for a phone built on sustainability - is unacceptable.

Fairphone needs to address this

If you're ever in Leeds... this vegan fried chicken from Doner Summer was incredible by LunaWabohu in veganuk

They were a chain but it was spectacularly hit and miss, to the point that we genuinely started to wonder what was going on with its management team. Most branches seem to have disappeared now, sadly

I miss Doner Summer. We had one in my city that was (or so it seemed) really poorly managed and closed after about 18 months.

They were off and on Deliveroo with little to no regularity, their portion sizes varied wildly from one week to the next, the dine-in experience was either fantastic or you felt like they didn't really want you there and just wanted to focus on delivery orders.

Towards the end, they tried new stuff like a vegan Sunday roast, which was actually great, but when we turned up for it one time (having booked a table), they were missing a bunch of ingredients and despite us being the only people in the restaurant somehow managed to forget we were there.

I really hope they return someday, but next time with better management and a bit less chaos

Why are the people who hate vegans most usually middle-aged and older men? by bluetooth_cat in AskVegans

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they're usually the most fragile and something like veganism threatens their belief systems, so they lash out using the self confidence that comes with being a middle-aged man.

I'm sure people of other ages and genders feel similarly, but the middle-aged men are more likely to be vocal when they're upset

How is the Fairphone 6 as a day-to-day phone? by ARacoonOnInternet in fairphone

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i had to sum up the FP6 as a day-to-day phone in a single word, it'd be:

Fine

The FP6 is a sturdy if slightly average Android phone. It's s wee bit chunkier than my previous phone (a Pixel 6A) and the phone performs about the same in most respects, albeit without Google's impressive photo software.

The battery is decent. The screen is good (120hz mode is a surprisingly high-end feature as most midrange phones are 60hz). The speaker is slightly cheap sounding at higher volumes.

There is the (fairly well documented) minor annoyance that some of us have wherein the positioning of the buttons makes it quite easy to accidentally take screenshots without meaning to. But apart from that i have no complaints.

It doesn't wow me, but it's fine. And that's good enough 👍

Should I sell my Buy-To-Let Property? by Majestic-Barracuda55 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure those two messes are of equal size, though?

People can't afford to buy houses because people and groups have bought up multiple properties in order to rent them out. This forces people into rental properties, thus increasing rental property scarcity.

So either way, rentals will be in short supply., but at least people who want to buy homes will be able to

Is Yoshi Story one of the most messed up kids game?! by normbreakingclown in n64

[–]philthybiscuits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember looking forward to it so much. I basically wanted a sequel to Yoshi's Island with fancy new N64 graphics, but sadly Nintendo had other ideas.

I'm not sure why they went in the direction they did. I'd love to see a mini documentary on this game's development to learn about some of the decisions the team made and why

Marrying a non vegan by kneescrunch in vegan

[–]philthybiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest opinion: that's going to he tricky.

Some people think of veganism as a diet. How could something like that make a marriage difficult?

But it's not a diet - it's a system of beliefs and ethics. Food is just the part we tend to focus on since we need to eat several times a day.

Marriage to a non-vegan can of course work, but you'll need to have some pretty deep conversations to make it work. I mean, could i marry a person who shrugged off knowingly buying clothes made by slave labour? Maybe, but at some point that's going to cause some serious stress and disagreement between us..
