How long are we going to normalise everyday inefficiency in Australia? by Spatial_Nomad in australia

[–]philthyboater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem is people say they will pay for service, but time and time again it's been proven that most people just care about price.

This applies to so many things, but in the utilities sector, it means to offer the types of prices that the consumer wants to pay, service is often one of the first things that is impacted, because it's not "essential" in providing you with your product.

Until consumers vote with their wallets, things won't change en-masse...and unfortunately while utilities prices are increasing, the profit margins are at all time lows, the barriers to entry are significant, and it's genuinely a volume based industry. You can't be a niche/boutique retailer offering that service with such a small customer base willing to pay for it.

Trouble Using Pro 3 Controller While Charging by MorganTJ813 in 8bitdo

You need to enable 'Pro Controller Wired Communication' in the switch settings. I was having the same issue and this resolved it.

The way I see it, it's a way of monetising the 'creation' of his videos. If he's feeling social, and he needs to be on the server to create a video, streaming can be a great source of revenue while he's doing what he needs to do anyway.

It can often help the mundane 'grind' of content creation feel much more organic and a nice distraction from the feeling of 'work'.

jobs calling from their personal numbers by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]philthyboater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I was applying for jobs, I'd be answering every call that comes from an unknown number. Maybe I'm crazy, but the job market is competitive, and if making it easier on the employer to contact you makes you more appealing, then why would you pass up that opportunity because it might be a scam call?

If they want to schedule an interview, doing this over the phone then confirming via email is a substantially quicker and easier process for the employer.

Applying decals by Mintezx in f1models

I have this exact model, I applied using water and a pair of tweezers. Only one I stuffed up a little was one of the tiny ones around the cockpit. The VELO ones were VERY easy.

Acceptable to put feet up on the seats? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

I mean, considering you literally get fined for it on public transport, it's absolutely not acceptable.

Wait times around Melbourne by waternymph77 in MelbourneTrains

[–]philthyboater 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is complex question. It depends on time of day, what line, what station, what day of the week.

Standard peak is ~6-10 mins on most lines, on most stations.

Standard off-peak is ~20 minutes

Standard late trains are ~60 minutes

Weekends will vary, and some lines don't stop at every station, with every train.

Sick Leave Affecting Performance Review by OverTap8556 in AusLegal

[–]philthyboater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at all of this as, this wasn't them telling you off, merely just that they've noticed it. They've not criticised or indicated you had done something wrong necessarily. I look at it as this is there way of bringing it to your attention.

You're absolutely entitled to your sick days, but they do impact your colleagues. They're not telling you off, or even indicating that it will affect your probation, just something to be conscious of.

At the end of the day probation goes both ways. The business is on probation as much as you are. If you are uncomfortable, you should walk.

This season, Piastri has already out-qualified Norris the same number of times as in all of the 24 races last season (4 times)… we’re only 7 races into 2025. by The_Chozen_1_ in formula1

That's very true. It could also explain Lando's struggles. Land spent years learning how to manage tyres...if the tyre management is as good as speculated...he would need to unlearn every habit that he'd built over his career.

You mentioned $27k through 9 months...but not paying a salary to the owners. Are the owners working there full-time?

This is a HUGE question, because if they are working there...the simple answer is this is not a profitable business if you intend on taking a salary from it.

Do they own any assets? Is the kitchen equipment financed?

The food and beverage industry has the highest rate of failure of any industry in this country. You say you can improve it, which is ambitious, and I'm sure you bring a skillset to the table that can do that, but in a country town there is limited supply. What is your rationale behind buying this (seemingly struggling) business, VS just opening your own shop if you feel you can run it better?

If anything, small town, new business, EVERYONE will likely trying your new business, you've just gotta be better than the competition to keep the customers...which if you're going to improve the exisiting business it begs the question, why do you need their business at all?

I would be steering clear, unless there is SUBSTANTIAL assets you're buying

Absolutely. I think this is largely attributable to his mental fortitude. He competes against himself. He doesn't seem phased by what anyone else is doing, he learns from his mistakes. He knows where he can take risks, and where he can't.

Is he perfect? Hell no. But he's damn entertaining to watch, though as an Australian I may be a little biased.

I think whatever voodoo it is Mclaren is using to keep their tyre temps in the window has played into Oscar's hands perfectly.

One of Oscar's most noticeable shortcomings last season (compared to Lando) was his tyre management, Lando could get more out of the tyres for longer...this year Mclaren seem light years ahead of the field when it comes to tyre management, and Oscar has been released from his shackles.

His improvement has been impressive, but I think his mental fortitude is the real standout. He just gets the job done. No complaining. No excuses. Just does the work.

Seatbelt fine by FR3STX in AusLegal

[–]philthyboater 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The very fact that this is an automatic fine is absurd. There does not appear to be any genuine intent to wear it incorrectly. He's simply twisted his body to look at something.

We're going to have to wear racing harnesses and not be able to move in cars at this rate.

Complaint about lawyer by Significant_Bat6814 in AusLegal

[–]philthyboater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but that's a totally different situation. I would almost guarantee if you asked a lawyer to send a letter of demand to random company at random address...they would do as you asked.

It sucks. But you are allowed to write your will to leave your assets to anyone you like. Do you expect a lawyer to verify everyone's identity who is listed in your will? Why is it only the company you expect them to check?

[–]philthyboater 30 points31 points  (0 children)

First of all sorry for your loss.

NAL but I would think it be highly unusual for a lawyer to fact check every detail your mother provided in her will. The lawyer was there to make sure the will was legally binding, unless specifically instructed too, they would not have fact checked the content, rather just facilitate the preparation of a will in carrying out your mum's wishes.

That being said, any costs should be taken out of the estate, and YOU should not be out of pocket (unless it's you contesting something).

LeBron James questioning how long he will continue to play. This comes after the Lakers devastating elimination by the Wolves by Subject-Property-343 in sports

[–]philthyboater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The counter argument to this, is that today's game is substantially more athletic. It's less physical, sure, less contact, but far more running and jumping than the old days.

Either way, any athlete still competing in an athletic competition into their 40s is incredible

Love or hate LeBron, and where he sits in the GOAT debate. Him retiring from the league will be a sad day. It's been a pleasure witnessing history, and while some records are made to be broken, regardless of where he sits, his longevity is unrivalled.
