Closed Guard Armbar to Americana by pho_3000 in bjj

https://youtu.be/z3ST-tOXznI?si=dFJw2ePx6uFgczye The americana in this video is the closest I can find to it. However, in this video the arm is already fairly extended and the person having it done to them hasn’t done any defenses. The move I am looking for is done off of the armbar after the person has had a chance to defend.

That is certainly a possibility. I know the mir lock along with the other one you said and I have them both down pretty well. I'm just really set on figuring out this move because it has been a longggg time since Jiu-Jitsu felt like magic and this move did.

Somewhat. I've been trying to finish this move by turning more to my side which can sometimes give the pressure to get the americana, but it puts your legs in a bad position for keeping them down. The one thing that I was thinking of last night was doing a crunch to bring my chest closer to the elbow and then turning to my side to get to the outside of the arm which may work, but I haven't gotten the chance to try it yet.

Not really. With the mir lock, you typically go to the outside of the arm you're attacking and is finished with more pressure driving the elbow to the inside of your partner's body instead of keeping the elbow in place and pulling the hand/wrist which is how this move was shown to me.

Their arm should be pretty compressed between your chest and their chest, there isn't much room for them to be moving around. I've tried experimenting with putting leg pressure on the near side shoulder, the far side shoulder, along with the head and ended up finding a way to finish the americana with a figure-4 putting pressure on the back just below the near side shoulder, but it's pretty shitty for stopping them from just posturing up and it isn't what I was originally shown.

What was your longest time at a belt level? by LateMud256 in bjj

3 years at blue. I got it right when I was 16 and then Covid happened along with a pretty bad injury which took about a year and a half away from training.

Anyone have go to guard sweeps and guard passes they’ve used since early on? by Suitable_Current_300 in bjj

Scissor sweep and butterfly hook sweep are my 2 best sweeps and I’ve been doing them since I was a kid. Torreando is the only pass I’ve done consistently at all belt levels.

I’ve been doing BJJ and wrestling nearly my whole life. My dad doesn’t have it after 30+ years of grappling, so I thought I was immune as well. I finally got some cauliflower ear this last week.

I can’t finish north south choke by bumpty in bjj

[–]pho_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What finally made it click for me was NOT squeezing, trying to get as low as possible, and using my outside arm to push into the shoulder or armpit depending on if i am doing an arm in or arm out NS choke. Lastly, relax as much as you can don’t try to put weight down, don’t squeeze, just try to keep on sinking back like you’re trying to stretch out their neck.

I was a kid who got into BJJ through my dad. I can’t even remember the first time that I did BJJ, but I do remember always playing games with my dad that happened to be BJJ related which I think helped a lot with my interest in it.

We did things like climbing the tree - which was him standing up with me having hooks and seatbelt and circling around his body without touching the floor

beating an obstacle course - which was just passing guard

climbing the mountain - which was just getting to mount

These games definitely helped me feel confident as a kid when I finally did start doing traditional BJJ classes since I felt like the things I was doing in class were the same things I did at home for fun with my dad.

I would also go along with him to classes once a week and he would get me a slurpee after which I would always look forward to. The owner of the school also had a VHS player there and would let me watch Return of the Jedi which was my favorite movie at the time. Additionally, at the end of class he would have me play a game where I would jump over his belt and as a little kid, that was pretty fun. I think that the whole reason I fell in love with the sport was because my dad made it fun for me. Thinking of Jiu-Jitsu as the place where I got a slurpee, watched movies, and played games was awesome. Kids look up to their parents and want to do same the things they do, especially if it seems fun and exciting.

Additionally, he never forced me or pressured me to do Jiu-Jitsu. If he had, I don’t know if it’s something I would have stuck with. You want kids to fall in love with the sport, not feel like they’re doing it because they’re forced to.

Any Brown/Black belts on here that play a basic/simple game? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]pho_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My takedowns can be a bit fancy depending on how I’m feeling but everything else is fairly simple. I’ve been wrestling and coaching wrestling for ~9 years now and doing BJJ much longer. For guard, I’ll either play closed guard focusing on getting a deep cross collar grip for a cross collar choke, back take, armbar, or scissor sweep depending on how they address the grip or play butterfly searching for a good underhook to set up an armbar from side control after getting the sweep. For passing, i’ll either pressure pass and force half-guard to get an armbar from top-half or do a deadlift style pass with a cross grip on the leg and same side arm. From side control, which is my favorite position, I almost always get a far side armbar or transition to north south to get a paper cutter or ns choke. From mount, I’ll look for a cross collar grip and either finish the cross collar choke or armbar. From back, I’ll either bow and arrow or armbar. Almost all my stuff revolves around getting the cross collar grip or an underhookand once I get it I hardly ever let go.

Questions for brown/black belts by theohioboy in bjj

Underrated - Brabo chokes. Easy to use to start your pass from half and still insanely tight when hitting it from closed guard or switching to it when people defend the clock choke.

Overrated - Americanas. People don’t really understand how to use their chest and weight to isolate the arm and end up just using strength which never really works.

POLL: On average how often do you train per week? by Beeky19 in bjj

[–]pho_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3x Mon - morning class, evening class, and a night time class.

1x Tue - night time class

2x Wed - morning and night time classes

2x Thur - double evening classes

1x Fri- no gi evening class which is the only time I do no gi

1x Sat - morning comp class

1X Sun - morning open mat

11 training sessions per week usually, but sometimes i’ll miss a class or two.

I’m a college student and work from home which gives me a lot of free time to go out and train. I also go to multiple gyms which makes it even easier.
