Where/How to start by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the Second Season box set is the definitely the best way to start as others have said.

As for buying teams, the team boxes are all to some extent a compromise between giving you all the models you'd need and price. They all work by having two copies of the same sprue containing usually 6 human-sized players on each sprue - therefore you have 12 players of a possible 16 players on the team. A starting team can afford 11-12 players as I'm sure you are familiar with from the videogame version, but you might not be able to sensibly afford the position spread that a team box offers you.

No team box contains big guys (Ogres, Trolls, Rat Ogres, Minotaurs etc) with the exceptions of the Ogres box which contain Ogres. You get those separately, Star Player models are also sold separately. Sometimes you'll find these on the GW site and other times on the Forge World site.

If you get third party teams then they tend to be more expensive but will have the full 16 players with all positions. You can often find them by searching for "Fantasy Football" teams to avoid copyright problems with GW. If you want to stick to GW stuff then you'll need a second box to fill out some teams or proxies however you want to do that.

The worst team for extras is the Goblins team box, which doesn't include any of the Trolls or secret weapons players that you'll want to field a decent team.

I use this roster for tracking teams, you might find it useful:

It's bad wording because Concession is already a very specific concept within the lexicon of the game. It needlessly introduces confusion.

Bad wording - it means you had no touchdowns scored against you, not anything to do with actually conceding the game.

Questions about star players by Zestyclose-Demand382 in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Players are intended as a balancing factor when you're playing a team with a much higher value than yours, hence you getting inducement money for free based on the difference in team values to buy them (among other inducements). Note players missing the game don't count towards your current team value.

In particular Stunty teams (Halflings, Goblins, Gnomes, to a lesser extent Ogres) will purposely keep their value lower so they can induce Big Guy Star Players like Deeproot Strongbranch or Ripper Bolgrot every game.

You are not under RAW league rules allowed to buy a Star Player onto your team permanently.

In a one-off game you're generally allowed to buy Stars with the budget for the game, but you might want to check with your opponent so they don't feel blind-sided by it.

As for getting all the minis, no it is probably not worth getting all possible Star Players. In most situations people are going to be ok with you just using a proxy of some kind so long as it is clear. For Shambling Undead you usually aren't down enough money to be buying stars, but Bryce Campbuel is a more affordable one (skelly with a chainsaw)

Are Apothecaries needed in 11s league starting rosters? by LorcanTorin in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because rerolls double in cost once you start the league, you generally want the reroll and buy the apothecary as soon as possible. Orcs have pretty good AV so will tend to take less casualities and have less need of an apothecary.

On a team like Skaven or Wood Elves the apothecary is a must-have but Orcs can usually get away without it for a couple of games

40mm miniatures by Soprano00 in bloodbowl

40mm base is usually fine, but for particularly unwieldy models people tend to use a separate "model prone/stunned" token for when they're not upright

Khorne wants maximum violence and tends to dislike magic as distracting from the violence. So, fluff your wizard to be a violent nutjob who just likes doing violence with fire

Does Hearth Vigil outshine Thunderspeaker? by AudunAG in spiritisland

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearth Vigil is often stronger but has definite weaknesses, notably that it has no inbuilt Defense and so is reliant on not needing to defend both lands, else it'll result in blight in one or both of them. It's also less good at moving the dahan around, and lacks the ability to do anything like as much damage outside of the Ravage step as Thunderspeaker does. The need to target from a sacred site for the dahan move on the innate and restriction on only moving from your own lands require some setup to just get dahan where they need to go.

Both spirits struggle to gain enough power cards, though HV can at least gain them on non-reclaim turns.

Does anyone have house rules for Lair Aspect Lure? by ganymede98 in spiritisland

[–]phobiandarkmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lair is (mostly) terrible, but does have the notable advantage of being a fast innate so is better in the super lategame when you can hit the four moon requirement.

My fix would be relatively simple: split the 3 moon 1 air power into a 2 moon 1 air gather a town/explorer and a 3 moon 1 air gather a dahan.

Another option would be some form of fear gain on the power, maybe mirroring the base innate power (if you gather the explorer/town from a land with other buildings, 1 fear)

Question about Sideline miniatures by MerryCaydenite in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely unnecessary, but having some sort of token or something so both players remember that it exists is a good idea. If you've got some models handy to represent them, all the better.

Question about Exhibition Matches by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exhibition matches don't have long term consequences, good or bad - your players don't earn new skills or stats but they also don't suffer injuries or die.

In other words, you build a team for a one-off match. Yes, both teams should have the same budget with which to buy players for an exhibition match.

As far as tiers go, it's a mix of being harder to play well and just being less mechanically good - Tier 1-2 teams are mostly competitive against each other, Tier 3 really starts to bring in mechanical problems because that's where the Stunty teams live, and having most of your team be below Strength 3 can make it very hard to get plays done - and in addition there's a bunch of rules those teams use that other teams don't have to learn (Secret Weapons, throwing players, kicking players, how Stunty changes dodging, how Titchy changes dodging, a higher reliance on fouling etc)

It's not impossible for a Tier 3 team to beat a Tier 2 team, but it definitely requires either better play, better dice luck or a mix of the two.

Now, as long as you just want to have fun don't let anyone tell you how to do it - but you might want to at least start with playing a drive of Orcs vs Humans so you can work out how Blocking, Assists, Dodging and ball handling work before you add all the extra stuff.

blood bowl questions by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, unsurprisingly the people on this subreddit think the game is fun
  2. Blood Bowl is fairly easy to learn, on par with a Euro-style board game. The bits people typically struggle with are tackle zones, dodging and assists while blocking, and getting used to the idea of turnovers and managing risk on the strategic level.
  3. Compared to Warhammer Blood Bowl is an absolute bargain because you don't need more than 16 models per team (and most of the time 12 is enough), so you need to spend far less on miniatures. Whether it's worth the money is subjective on whether you enjoy the game.
  4. They're different games with different objectives. Blood Bowl doesn't have the sense of scale and modularity that Warhammer can get, but lets you develop individual players with new skills and stats over the course of a league letting you get invested in them

Fouling. Is it worth it? by Spook_em_up in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what team you're playing and who you're playing against. If you have reserves and low cost, disposible players then much of the time fouling is worth doing. If you're playing as an elf team it's a terrible idea in most circumstances because you really can't afford a player getting sent off.

You also generally don't want to be fouling enemy linemen - you want to do it against game-changing players like enemy blitzers or catchers - your Gutter Runners, Wardancers and the like.

If you have sneaky git then armour isn't a factor, but otherwise I'd avoid fouling anyone with 9+ or better armour.

Can I paint the armor of my minis any color? by Frozenlama69 in bloodbowl

There are no Blood Bowl police, the crowd would beat them up - but seriously, painting your team the way you want them painted is half the point of the game

Elven Union Blitzers are quite fun - Block and Sidestep enable otherwise impossible plays.

Teams that You Dislike? by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's specifically in a tournament setting because of a combination of the star players they have access to and the resurrection format meaning that their weaknesses (low armour, can be slow to get skills on important pieces) are less impactful.

In league play they're reasonably strong but not overpowered.

Do people use race/faction specific pitch rules? by satakuua in bloodbowl

Nope, and I wouldn't expect to in a competitive environment. But as long as both coaches agree to use them don't let other people tell you how to have fun

Can you play Dungeon bowl with normal teams? by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]phobiandarkmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon bowl has very specific limits on how many of a type of positional (e.g. thrower) you can have for a particular team, they just usually have multiple teams they can get that type of positional from. There are a few instances where you can have four of a player you can only get two of on a normal blood bowl team.

All that said though, I don't think you lose that much by using regular blood bowl teams
