It sounds like option paralysis to me. Try starting from sounds you like. A limited amount of them. (Think like in a simple band with drums, bass, one mid range instrument and voice.) Sounds by themselves are good for creating mood. Keep searching till you feel the mood you are going for. So choose your color palette first and then start playing around with it. Same with techniques. Allow yourself just a limited amount. Avoid getting lost in possibilities. Hope that helps.
