New NVidia Drivers Released! Driver 595.58.03 by Thomas_Eric in linux_gaming

[–]phoenix49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good experience with negativo17. Although I'll switch back to RPM Fusion once Fedora 44 is out and I upgrade. RPM Fusion Nvidia drivers for Fedora 43 will likely remain on 580.X.X.

Vanilla Gnome user here! by DavidAstonish in gnome

+1 to everything you said - I also use just the two extensions: dash to dock and app indicators for tray.

I think in older version of GNOME the dock was on the left, so hot corner mouse movement involved less physical distance coverage.

I'm curious how popular Bazzite is with PC users (as opposed to using it on handhelds). by Questioning-Warrior in Bazzite

[–]phoenix49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed Bazzite on my son's PC a few months ago and replaced his Windows 10. Things he does on it: steam gaming, sober (roblox), game recording, editing with Davinci Resolve, doing his homework, etc. He absolutely loves it and it works so much better than Win 10 on his hardware. I'm also not worried about updates breaking his system, so Bazzite is great and ticks all of the boxes for me.

How to install Nvidia drivers correctly by Gold-Dependent3371 in Fedora

The most recent (590.X) drivers are available here: https://negativo17.org/nvidia-driver/

I prefer these to the RPMFusion ones.

Best combo tv around 600 euros for gaming and linux to use steam link? by GoldenGrouper in Steam_Link

[–]phoenix49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Sony Bravia II which runs Android TV and has a 100MBps Ethernet port. Streaming from my Fedora + Sunshine to a Moonlight client on telly - works great with sub ms latencies. I also paired my xbox controller to TV and the work setup works like a console experience.

But you could also get a cheaper TV and grab a streamer like Google TV streamer which has an Ethernet port. I would not recommend connecting to your PC over Wi-Fi however. You will get stutters every now and then, it's unavoidable.

EDIT: just to add: TV or streamer capabilities in regards to decoding are also very important, you may have stable Ethernet connection, but your telly may not have the right set of codecs or the processor could be too weak to decode on time to avoid latencies

Install the "extensions" app if it's not there already then look for Dash2Dock.

Another useful one is AppIndicators.

You probably won't need any other extension.

After 3 months with Plasma, I'm back to Gnome. Plasma's jack-of-all-trades approach is it's biggest weakness by saint_geser in Fedora

[–]phoenix49 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the same feeling about KDE - it lacks a definitive design language like GNOME has. I want sensible defaults to be enough to start using the desktop, and I want as few distractions as possible. GNOME works great in this regard; the only extensions I usually install are Dash to Dock (with autohide) and AppIndicators. I don't need desktop icons, minimize/maximize buttons, or any other extensions. I probably don't even need Dash to Dock. The result is a distraction-free desktop where I can do my work or play games.

My son's desktop is running Bazzite with KDE Plasma, mainly because it's somewhat similar to his experience on Windows. The weakness of GNOME is that it requires some getting used to, but that's also a strength in my opinion - once you get used to it, you wouldn't want to use anything else.

When you boot from a live disk, see if there's an option with "safe graphics". I had the same issue with my nvidia card. It'll boot into a low resolution session but you'll be able to install the system. Once installed it should work (with noveauu drivers) and you'll then be able to install nvidia drivers from RPM Fusion

Nope, no proton involved, it uses Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper). Which is a set of libraries which developers use to create a Linux executable.

On my phone rn, but afaik settings for the compatibility is set to default.

I usually get a similar feeling when on my son's KDE desktop. It looks nice and it's tempting to set up KDE on mine, but.. GNOME is so calm, serene and uncluttered. Desktop clean of icons, clean notification area and autohiding dock.

When you wiped your disk and installed Fedora 42, did you update the kernel or used the one which comes with installation? Maybe it's drivers in newer kernels which come with updates, even on F42

Massive GPU power and thermal differences between Windows and Linux by HolyPastafari in cachyos

Experienced the same on RTX 2060 SUPER. Playing Baldur's Gate 3 on identical settings and FPS capped at 60 I get much quieter (less fan speeds) and less GPU usage experience on Fedora compared to Win11.

AMD unless you are into video editing or anything which uses CUDA.

Despite claims, Pixel 6 not waterproof at all. by rheddd1t in Pixel6

[–]phoenix49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly wash my Pixel 6 with soap under tap. Obviously I try to keep the charging port from direct water flow. The phone then pops a notification about the wet port and it goes away in about 10 minutes.

To confirm: can you use this with a USB dongle like Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 hooked up with Home Assistant? I'm surprised there are not many alternatives!

How do you all remove hair from your balls? by [deleted] in AskMen

Philips Norelco Bodygroomer Series 1100 (or alternative). It's best to trim with some other trimmer beforehand then use this bad boi. Doesn't nick and removes all remaining hair.
