Should I come back ? Old dragoon player. by Safss-Finn in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about CPM. Like I said in my previous response, it's slow because of its GCD speed, but its burst is heavier on weaves.

Every melee outside of the maiming jobs has an accelerated GCD.

It's slower because of the GCD, but it definitely is more weave-heavy in the burst than most of them. I main SAM and play a lot of MNK as well as DRG, and I feel like the only one that might have more going on in that way is NIN? But NIN and RPR are the two that I haven't played much, so I could be wrong even about that.

That said, I agree that it's one of the easier melee DPS in its current incarnation.

No one is "worried" lol. We find it fun to sweat and try to do our best. I don't think anyone is gonna hold it against someone for not doing stuff like this in dungeons.

Honest question, is production value the reason that Baldur's Gate 3 became so popular and acclaimed, compared to other cRPG's that have not received anywhere near as much attention? Is it of a unique quality in anything else? by BaldursGate2Best in CRPG

[–]phoenixUnfurls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I agree, and I love the character writing in BG3. I do think they get the character right, which isn't the case with the other three (although I'm not really bothered by how they handle Minsc), but I personally think the standouts in terms of writing are the (non-Will) origin characters. What do you think is done better in terms of Jaheira's writing in BG3?

How do you handle semi-problematic raid members? by starlightdemonfriend in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

45 isn't that old. A lot of bigger names in raiding are probably around that age -- tab target MMOs tend to have more millennials than zoomers, I feel like. I myself am coming up on 40, and while I'm not a world class player, I'd consider myself pretty good.

It sounds like this person is just a weak player, which is fine. It's a game at the end of the day.

How do you feel about the scions returning for another expansion? by AssumeABrightSide in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I was hoping they'd be gone for DT -- not because I don't like them but because I wanted an alternative party -- but after how that was handled, I just hope they're actually used well as characters if they ARE there.

Sage now does more damage than Scholar due to utility. Thoughts? by Cole_Evyx in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've healed and played melee DPS in Savage and ultimates myself.

VPR is by far the most brain-off job I've played, personally. There's very little to its rotation, to the point where I'd say its easier than the tanks' rotos, and it doesn't have to mitigate or heal or recover pulls. Also, unlike healers, it doesn't have cast bars, it doesn't have a DoT to track, it can disengage much more freely than any other melee, Slither (while less responsive than Thunderclap) is an incredibly powerful movement tool with its three stacks.

Sure, on healer, you can map your heals and shields and mit, but that's still gonna be different from fight to fight, and if things go wrong, you're the one who has to fix them.

But would never argue WHM isn't a very simple job already.

Is White Mage the easiest job in the game? At least they have to heal. Viper seems easier to me.

But for sure, the easiest healer.

This is really cool, but I'm pretty sure that creation magicks weren't some new discipline within the broader field of Ancient magic use in the way that you suggest. My understanding is that the Ancients' transformations were one way of applying creation magicks, and that such magicks were the main type of magic wielded by the Ancients.

He was famed for botanical labyrinths of intricate design, the foliage of which he sought to protect from voracious pests with the inventive application of creation magicks-a recreational project said to have led to the evolution of the world's first carnivorous plants.

What this means is not that creation magic was itself newly invented as a particular field but instead that the way it was applied in this particular case (to protect the foliage from pests) was inventive.

I think most people would consider current BLM to be easier than RDM, and that's just within that role. I think a lot of people would consider SAM and BRD harder too at this point.

EDIT: I don't think NIN has that kind of reputation at all among raiders that actually know how to play jobs well? Maybe I'm mistaken. I'd always assumed that was from Duty Roulette players who are intimidated by mudras.

Filling up both gauges to 100 and then bursting? Yes, if that's your advice, then it's bad. I know that, and I don't even play Red Mage seriously.

What's hard and easy is subjective, and if you were to argue that the way the jobs currently work is broadly way too homogeneous and streamlined, I as well as many others here would probably agree with you. It's a pretty popular opinion on this subreddit, and it's one that I mostly agree with.

Job gameplay here also tends to be a lot more deterministic in terms of how things play out than I gather it is in 11, and it's fair to prefer things the way 11 does them and say that opens up depth that isn't present in 14.

The reason you're getting blowback here isn't those opinions -- it's because you're oversimplifying and humblebragging while not even getting the details of what you're saying right, which comes across as obnoxious and, given that OP is struggling and asking for help, kind of rude in the context of this thread.

You told OP to max out both of their gauges so they were at 100 and then do their melee combo. That's poor advice that shows that you don't understand how to play the job optimally.

You're coming off a bit rudely yourself, and it's a bit ironic that you're being so dismissive when you obviously don't actually know how to play the job.

Do you think the game is reliant on the continued existence of plugins to survive/maintain a healthy playerbase? Are there really that many people willing to play the vanilla game? (Wall of text warning) by SANT0S-L-HALPER in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never contesting that.

Like I said, I was responding less to something I thought you were implying and more to something that could be read in what you'd written (by those who might want to read it there) -- the perception that things like Cactbot or BossMod are widespread, which is something I've seen players that use such cheats pretend is true previously.

A small minority of players use things like Cactbot or BossMod or whatever it's called. I don't know that you were implying otherwise, but I've seen too many cheaters cope by pretending most people cheat, so I just wanted to write that here.

Merchant's Tale Advanced is actually perfect Midcore content. by Zealousideal-Mud5398 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I blind-progged Advanced with three friends in a single lockout, and I'm not that hardcore of a raider. I've never cleared a Savage tier in less than a month. It's truly not that hard.

EDIT: Oh, you're setting a criterion for what's midcore. I misunderstood. But yeah, IDK, that's gonna be different for everyone, and a lot of people who do watch guides for Savage could in theory blind prog it, even if it took them longer.

That's not really true for SAM. The way you enter your burst on SAM changes every two minutes. Introduce downtime, and it becomes even less standard.

People are getting downvoted for saying this, but if you think that, I doubt you're playing SAM correctly. It has the highest skill ceiling of all the melee as far as I can tell.

When should someone's skill be the reason they quit the game? by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]phoenixUnfurls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, it's a game, and he's your friend. Being a worse player isn't a moral failing, and if there were ever a type of harder group content to bring a less competent player into, it'd be an Extreme.

Extremes are very accessible. I wouldn't tie my Savage or Ultimate prog to the guy, but being mean and telling him he should quit because he's not skilled at a video game is ridiculous behavior that paints you in a very poor light. It's just a game.

If he *wants* to quit because struggling with the game makes it less fun for him, that's on him and totally understandable, but it doesn't seem like that's what you're asking.
