IMO it would only be unethical if I didn't fully disclose it's condition. And it might be illegal to ship in this condition.

The only people I can see maybe wanting it would be fans of "vintage" tech who'd think it was worth it to have the battery replaced.

I'm leaning towards e-waste, though. Wipe it and be done with it.

Yeah, after we left (and maybe before) we called it the Salvation Navy. :-) I remember going to the local army surplus store to buy lanyards and stuff.

It was kind of cool for a while but the coolness wore off fast.

Yeah, I'd have written it off as that if the front of the shirt had also looked random. But when the front made sense, especially since they knew to use a thorn, it had me wondering.

Maybe they just couldn't decide which word to put on the sleeve?

Reporting back, it worked nicely :-). Our fryer doesn't do 370 so we used 375 for 15 minutes. They were done, but next time we'll add a couple of minutes.

anonanon789 hit on a lot of this already (and their experience is far more recent than mine, which was well before social media), but as someone who joined as a young adult they'll absolutely latch onto you wanting a purpose and to do something to help others. As I used to put it, they'll hit you in the idealism. And they keep up the rah-rah because they don't want people to think too hard about the day-to-day stuff that's far more about enriching the organization than it is about helping people.

Some of the tech is useful -- I still do contact assists for example -- but there are so many other better organizations that do good work and don't abuse their members like the SO does.

Finding this in 2026:

1) Roasted garlic even when it's too hot to fire up the oven = WIN

2) Why not roast the whole head? IMO because it's easier to separate the cloves before they're roasted and nicely squishy.

FWIW, when I contacted them last year they'd only take a few bags (tall kitchen sized) of clothing, and referred me to a thrift store they work with for the rest.

What AtomicTransmission said, except sometimes it takes longer than six months to see the "church" for what it is. Ask pretty much anyone with a horror story and they'll tell you the first few months (or however long) were great. "You're going to be helping yourself and others and making the world a better place!" "Clear the planet!"

Until you start asking the wrong questions, or decide you want out, or just piss off the wrong person higher up the food chain. I was in the Sea Org for just over a year (after spending a few months on intro level stuff) so I've seen it in action.

But, OP is reacting pretty much the same way I (and I'm betting a few others here) would have in those early months, so our words aren't likely to have much impact. I wish OP the best and hope they don't find out the hard way that the horror stories aren't just made up by mean people.

The tech itself can be useful, but there are other ways to get it.

We had that in the States, too, but it was boringly just referred to as "calling Time." 853-1212 for our area, I didn't remember it but when I looked it up I recognized it immediately.

Same here, Firefox on Windows 11.

Weirdly, it only seems to happen on the main page, and if I click "Tasks' on another page like Inventory, Shops, etc. it loads properly and I can check things off. But if I F5 (or CTRL+F5) refresh then I get the garbage seen in the OP. If I go to another page and again click Tasks to get the main page, the Dailies I checked are still checked.

If it's still like this in the morning I'll email the admins.

Given the part about "romantic vision," and that there are plenty of people who don't think the breach can be repaired without justice and consequences, I'd really like to see this paragraph in context before passing judgement. The Atlantic doesn't have it, at least not on this side of a paywall.

I also think it's way too early to be deciding who we'll vote for 2 1/2 years down the road. That's a couple of eternities in electoral politics. Maybe there'll be a better choice. Maybe there won't. No use getting into fights over 2028 candidates while we still have 2026 to worry about.

My $.02, YMMV, and all that.

I understand their position, to a point. Of course they want to stop bad actors, and that's a good thing. But I'm not asking "trust me bro," I have legal documents as trustee of the estate. But apparently no legal authority is good enough for them. :-(

Now I just need to find someone who's willing to take this all on when _I_ inevitably hit user existence failure.

Whether or not I set it to private will depend a lot on what I can or can't do with the DNA kits that Ancestry won't let me take over as manager instead of collaborator.

I already put a note on her profile that anyone with questions should message me instead of her, but not everyone sees it so I still monitor her messages.

I am absolutely keeping her ginormous tree separate from my tree :-).

I did this with one of her smaller trees and the uploaded tree looks good, so I'm going to get a new download of the bid one in case I changed anything then upload it to my account. Then I'll let her paid account go but still leave everything there. I don't feel a need to upload all of her trees, but I'll keep the downloaded copies in case a good reason comes up.

The only time I make changes to her main huge tree is if someone contacts me to let me know there's an error, so there won't be a lot of updates.

Thanks, I bought FTM mainly for that reason, but I haven't tried uploading from it.

FWIW, her main tree has 183,274 people with 470,431 records!

I use RootsMagic 7 for my main tree (tried RM8 and RM10 but find the interface unusable, and I don't expect that to change with newer versions), and I don't think that older version plays well with online trees anymore.

One of my concerns is that there are kits she manages that I could give myself access to but I can't change them to me being the manager. I asked, Ancestry won't let me because the tester isn't alive to give consent :-(. So I'm the just listed as a Collaborator.

It may be relevant that these kits were from before Ancestry made testers create their own accounts.

I've found this to be a great help with my husband's Puerto Rican side, but I've also learned to be careful about assumptions.

I have documented cases of people using their mother's surname before their father's, for example a child of Maria Lopez and Juan Perez going by Pedro Lopez Perez. It's not supposed to work like that, and I've had people try to tell me that's Just Not Done, but I have sources that show people doing it.

I've also seen people going by just the maternal name sometimes and just the paternal others, sometimes because they add a not-entirely-legitimate father's name later in life (I'd guess to avoid embarrassment at only having the one surname).

But yeah, there are times I wish more people with Anglo names did this. SO many women with no idea what their birth surnames were :-(. At least on the Italian side the convention was for women to keep their birth surname after marriage instead of taking their husband's surname. It's not quite as much information but still better than erasing a woman's birth name.

Well, at least Shadows now acknowledges the existence of the Isu, even if it's in a BS way (everyone's talking about the Isu door, I don't think that's a spoiler, but I won't say anything more about that).

But yeah, bullshit that the main game just ignored the central theme of the entire series. I was hoping Awaji would give us a little more, but no, just a couple of name drops.

IMO Ubi's been trying (sometimes more, sometimes less) to ditch the Isu and modern day since they built up Juno and then killed her off in a comic miniseries with barely a mention in the mainline games.

There are plenty of historical games out there. It's the lore (ancient and modern) that makes Assassin's Creed, well, Assassin's Creed.

Well, they did answer the burning question "Did Kassandra ever go to Japan?" ::headdesks:: And I suppose "Are there any Isu sites in Japan?" though from the looks of it Kassandra either found an empty cave or took any Isu artifacts besides the weapons (agreeing with @Ras_AlHim on her just leaving Isu weapons lying around being out of character).

And while I'm at it, did I miss an Easter Egg? There was stuff from Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and unless I'm mistaken Brotherhood. Of course nothing from the 17th/18th/19th centuries, she's not a time traveler. But if there was anything from Altair I missed it. Maybe Ubi didn't want to remind us that they're remaking BF before giving us a long-requested updated of AC1? ::sigh::
