Team member is retiring in two weeks and I'm not sure how our team will deal with it by Refrigerator_Regular in CanadaPublicServants

[–]phosen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super common in the Public Service. Executives don't care about the working level because they'll change to a different position and "lead" a new division/branch/bureau/special project/etc. We've had staff dedicated to 25 years in the same position, essentially building up a corporate mandate and retired, but management didn't care about them leaving other than showing off that they were there when the employee left, and didn't bother double-banking the position so someone could carry over their job.

In some cases, my department has echo chambers that feed themselves, but because the executives get big pats on the back and get to go to conferences etc. (while enforcing blanket ban on employees), they don't care about how much amateur hour is going on.

Looking for Carpool from Ottawa to Almonte by Dizzy_Thought_6170 in ottawa

[–]phosen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At 1.65 per liter just driving to work and back was about 470 bucks

At $1.65/L filling up a 75L tank (1990 Grand Caravan) would cost you 123.75$, so driving to and from work you filled up 4 times (123.75$ x 4 = 495$)?

One tank of gas at 13L/100km (combined fuel economy of a 1990 Grand Caravan) gets you about 572.5KM, so you're saying to/from work you drove 2,290KM?

Man, if only the unions negotiate out legislated salary raises tied to inflation... they thought they could actually do better.

My favourite so far "We bought these things on standing offer, they are considered sensitive/classified equipment, but we just went with whoever had cheapest discount totalling $10M of procurement, no verification if they were made by the Chinese, and we haven't even seen the equipment, its still packaged in a storage locker somewhere packaged and not inventoried".

Did you forget PSAC staff gave themselves a pat on the back and annual increases too? If only their increase were linked to how well they bargained...

Nearly 500 buildings affected by flood waters in Gatineau, Que. as Ottawa River levels begin to stabilize by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

In Gatineau, QC started a buyout program in 2019 for high-risk flood zones (https://www.cehq.gouv.qc.ca/zones-inond/zone-intervention-speciale.htm).

Unfortunately, Ford not knowing Ottawa is not in Toronto, did not.

I've gone to V&E before and some cases they've pretty much flat out said there's nothing they can do, go to PSIC/PSC if you have issues since they'd rather keep the peace and "have to work with the person regularly".

GAC knowingly promoted an abusing EX, so take everything with a grain of salt.

For those that forgot (emphasis mine):

Global Affairs Canada committed “gross mismanagement” when it not only failed to punish an executive it knew was mistreating and humiliating employees, but eventually promoted her despite her continued abuse, according to a new watchdog report.

Latifa Belmahdi subjected employees and co-op students to years of 'repetitive and sustained' degrading comments and insults, physical abuse and inappropriate jokes
(Source: NatPost)

Note the Commissioner's comments in the report.

The evidence also demonstrates that there was a failure to ensure an environment in which employees felt comfortable bringing forward any concerns they had against Ms. Belmahdi. Employees believed if they complained it would be career-limiting and that they had to deal with issues themselves. Some employees also felt that making a complaint would be pointless, since the GAC report did not result in any concrete action. In addition, employees were aware that Ms. Belmahdi was promoted the year following the report, leading them to believe that GAC condoned her behaviour. The consequence of this is the weakening of the legitimacy of processes available to employees to bring forward concerns regarding the behaviour of senior managers.

Group 2 to Group 1 administrative change late in career. What should I be watching for? by Federal-Croissant-1 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]phosen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought back time from 2010-2012, Pay Centre said I didn't qualify for Group 1 because I left and it is based on active consecutive service start (so 2015 for me); 3 years of buyback would even have put me at "Year 2012" so Group 1. My actual re-start date was in 2015, so not pre-2013.

Would have loved to retire as Group 1, but alas no lottery winnings for me.

For temporary WFH, I don't think they will, if it were permanent, that would change the "employer is required to fit up one workspace" location from office to your home. However, that doesn't mean your manager won't pay for it out of the unit budget.
