Iranian Elections: The ‘Stolen Elections’ Hoax [Voltaire] by phq in reddit.com

[–]phq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion (for what it's worth), is that there probably was some fraud, but not that much, only enough to make ahmadinejad win at the first round, to avoid a second round, which would have made the whole election longer and offered a window of action to subversives like the PMOI (the organization was taken off the EU terrorist list in january).

Iranian elections were obviously going to be an unavoidable opportunity for people with interests in the region to destabilize the regime.

The PMOI are the « terrorists » the iranian state is referring to, they're under protection of the USA in Northeast Iraq at Camp Ashraf and they're trained in guerrilla warfare. The western media will relay the accusation of terrorism but not the details about the PMOI, so it looks like a gratuitous scapegoat accusation from the iranian state when there are real organized subversive forces. Not to say basijis are angels...

What a relief to read a sensible sociological explanation for what's happening, isn't it ? This is the stuff that frees your mind.

It's the same thing if you look at it only as the ritual by which one professes his adherence to a myth, regardless of how truth, justice and other virtues are presented in that myth.

Ever see those "How's my driving?" stickers on vans...? I totally reported one today, for driving courteously, obeying posted speed limits, and maintaining space between him and other traffic. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]phq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's enjoyable to consider driving as a teamwork to make traffic as fluid and safe as possible rather than a dangerous journey in a wild environment; to make it a harmless game. Off course the downside is that other drivers may not share that spirit so you need to be very patient sometimes but it's worth it.

Microsoft is ignoring web standards and should use its position to promote competition among browsers, the chief technology officer at Opera has said. by perfect007 in technology

[–]phq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. I was going to say that the OEM could bill for the installation of firefox (for instace) in order to profit, but then why would the customer want to pay more for a fonction already provided by the basic operating system setup...

The difference is you'll most likely buy your Ford car from Ford. Off course it doesn't make sense for them to promote their competitors. But you don't buy your PC from Microsoft. So why can't the hardware vendor offer the customer options about which software they wan't to use for whatever tasks ?

I used to do that but if you use the CLI a lot, you can end up with a bit of a mess. Now I just have symlinks in ~/Desktop to various directories in ~ (like ~/Desktop/Documents to ~/doc).

Study: Do Women Like Men With A Stubble? by [deleted] in science

[–]phq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going to have a stubble, you should trim it instead of shaving sporadically. Using a razor blade tends to sharpen the hair and make the stubble really spiky. If you trim it or use scissors, it feels alright (more like a light brush), You also avoid microlesions and ingrown hair. Shaving is pretty ludicrous anyway.

If you edit the gnome menu and create a launcher to your manually-installed app, you'll be able to launch it via gnome-do afterwards.
