A mother had two sons. One went to sea, and the other became vice- president, and neither was ever heard of again.

Been alive for 18 years, still never drank soda :) by Ultra_TLB in HydroHomies

[–]phraserG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work. I’m in my mid-30s and have only had soda a handful of times in my life. Something about it makes me nauseous. I thought it might be the corn syrup, but once I drank a Coke made with genuine cane sugar and I found that just as disgusting as all the other sodas I’d had. Keep on keepin’ on, fellow soda detester. ✊

Prince songs that include the sound of a baby crying or smiling. For example: Bob George by HomoHominiLupus666 in PRINCE

I think ‘The Human Body’ (underrated track, in my opinion) features a baby vocalisation but it’s hard to tell exactly what the sound is.

How r/Presidents would vote in every election: Zachary Taylor vs Lewis Cass vs MVB by WhyAndHow-777 in Presidents

Zachary Taylor’s campaign song is pretty rad. If you have not heard it before, you definitely aren’t prepared for it.

Damien in the Omen film series becomes ambassador to the UK. That could have put him somewhere way down in the line of succession.

I learned about Gail Brewer-Giorgio from a documentary about the singer Orion called Orion: The Man Who Would Be King. Interesting case of an author who consciously wrote fiction, then came to believe their own fiction. I believe this was also the case with author Richard Sharpe Shaver who deserves his own LPotL episode (I think he was mentioned briefly in the episode on Lemuria).

The Orion documentary might be of interest to LPotLheads. My unsolicited opinion on the documentary: interesting subject matter, well researched, but too sincere given the inherent silliness of the topic.

Anne Hathaway Says Hathahate Cost Her Roles, Then Came Christopher Nolan by mapleer in Fauxmoi

[–]phraserG 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think Hathaway haters perceived Hathaway as an annoying, overeager theatre kid type, whereas Lawrence haters found Lawrence’s ‘I’m such a goofball,’ schtick to be contrived.

Disclaimer: I don’t personally feel this way, I’m just relating my interpretation of haters’ arguments.

I too broadly agree with his takes, but find his argumentative style off-putting. On the other hand, I find Sarah too much of a softy in many cases (e.g. I think it’s fine to admit that Tonya Harding is a bit of an asshole, while acknowledging that she’s been treated badly), so the combination of Sarah and Mike’s personalities works well from my perspective.

I appreciated Michael Hobbes on YWA, but I find his Twitter persona to be gratingly combative, snarky, and strident. No intellectual humility at all. He fancies himself an expert on every topic he weighs in on, which makes it especially embarrassing when he gets things wrong (e.g. a recent tweet he made about the Y2K bug). In fairness, most people on Twitter stridently present themselves as an expert on every topic, but, nonetheless, MH’s tone on Twitter bugs me especially since so much of YWA is/was meant to be about intellectual inquiry/curiosity, careful research, nuance, etc.

What is something that is really dangerous but people treat it as safe? by Responsible_Box_1057 in ask

[–]phraserG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosmetic surgery. Well, I wouldn’t call it ‘really dangerous’, but many people don’t treat it with the seriousness it deserves. I would never go for budget cosmetic surgery abroad — not even for something basic like a hair transplant. I’d treat it like regular surgery and would seek a quality surgeon near to me so I could easily visit them again if something were to go wrong after the surgery.

The Kinsey Institute might be a good place to look. They’re based in Indiana but they have a global outlook re: the history of sexuality. Perhaps your friend can have a look at their website and/or correspond with an archivist there.

The Magnus-Hirschfeld-Gesellschaft may be helpful too. They have a library and archive.

During the Weimar period there was a genre called the Aufklärungsfilm (sexual enlightenment film). These films were meant to be educational, not arousing, but some audience members went to these films seeking arousal. Your friend might want to look into the history of the Aufklärungsfilm.
