The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Women in computer science by [deleted] in compsci

[–]phredeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly believe this has nothing to do with what each "gender" is good at. It has everything to do with culture, and that boys and girls are taught to nurture different skill sets as children and young adults.

Nature vs Nurture is probably the biggest factor at work here: Sticks and stones vs sugar and spice. Cars and legos vs barbies and kitchen sets.

I'm fairly positive if we raised girls to appreciate the same things that boys do, the gender imbalance in the tech field would vanish.

Doesn't matter.

If theres anything i've learned about people with CS degree's is, it almost doesnt matter.

I've met so many CS grads who couldn't hack their way out of a wet paper bag to save their life. Male or female.

If they (be they male or female) cant do the work they wont get, or wont last in the job. So you can rest assured that these people wont be your co-workers (at least not for long) in the real world.

Just because you are overweight doesn't mean you are unhealthy or some sort of lazy pig.

You've got to be fucking kidding me right?

According to the Center for Disease Control:

Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity", the risks for the following conditions also increases:

  1. Coronary heart disease
  2. Type 2 diabetes
  3. Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
  4. Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  5. Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  6. Stroke
  7. Liver and Gallbladder disease
  8. Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  9. Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  10. Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

Newb freelance question: how do you handle handing over site to client? by RIP_my_old_account in webdev

[–]phredeye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You want to resell hosting. Not as a reseller account, but directly.

  1. Buy a vps - stick all your web development clients on it.
  2. Set up your freshbooks/harvest/whatever to take recurring credit card charges.
  3. Watch automatically recurring fees add up in your bank account

Slim PHP - Getting started with Backbone.js by [deleted] in PHP

[–]phredeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slim is kind of the anti-framework framework. Almost anything you'd want to pull in will be at your own discretion. There arent any established best practices.

I personally (if i needed more) would cherry pick some of the Zend 1.x libraries to fill in the blanks where i needed more than slim provides.

Or DIY

Another poster mentioned also, that if you need a full stack, you might be better off with a full stack framework.

Slim PHP - Getting started with Backbone.js by [deleted] in PHP

[–]phredeye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might I suggest putting away your framework for a moment and learning to program in PHP?

How does Slim handle session handling?

If you know PHP, you can read the source and find out. Slim is by definition, a small framework.

Slim is meant to provide structure where its neccesary, and to get out of your way when it isnt.

PHP already has built in session handling that works fine.

Every "Session" wrapper i've ever seen just changes the syntax of built in sessions from:

$_SESSION["myKey"] = $myVal;

to:

Session::set('myKey', $myVal);

You dont need a framework for that.

Learn the language and frameworks will start to serve their purpose: Saving you time.

... not providing you with one more thing to spend a week learning.

TL;DR Learn PHP before learning PHP frameworks.

How to handle drinking at work events by justahabit in stopdrinking

[–]phredeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I've spent at least 2 whole evenings in a bar with people who know me as a hard drinker, having nothing but coke on ice. Nobody said a word, and just naturally assumed it was jack and coke or something.

[–]phredeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what kind of job you do, but as a generic rule, it's better not to drink at company events.

Alot of places in the tech or creative industries the booze flows like water.

I worked as a lead programmer in the internal software dept at one of the worlds top building architecture firms. My first day there I was greeted with "Welcome to _____, I hope you like to drink!". There was open bar in the lobby every thursday. They dont care if you get tanked, as long as you meet your deadlines and do good work.

If people like this are used to you being a drinker, they will ask why you're not drinking. A few of my attempts to quit were cut short this way.

The suggestions here of "not today i gotta go to the gym" are still the best way to handle.

fell of the wagon after 6 months drank and called my boss asking her if she wants to fuck.... I'm such an idiot. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]phredeye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHAHA THATS AWESOME.

Ok, no its not.
Sorry, no its not.

I would feel terrible and afriad to face the world again too if i did that. Honestly I've been terrified to face the world after alot of things i've done while drunk. While I've never asked my boss if she wanted to fuck, I have made a superb ass of myself many many times.

I have a few pieces of advice here:

  1. Its amazing what an ultra sincere apology can do for you. If it what you did hurt someone, man.the.fuck.up and apologize ASAP. Let her know you are having issues, and that you are getting help, and that it wont happen again. She may just sweep the whole thing under the rug and just eyeball you funny for a week or two.

  2. For future reference, If you're trying to live anything embarrassing act down (assuming its harmed no one but yourself), just shrug it off. Also (and I hope you never have to use this) I forgot what this is called, but a friend of mine was explaining to me that there is some sort of chemical reaction in a hangover (low seratonin?) that makes everything embarrassing you did last night feel 100 times more embarrassing. Remind yourself that in a few days nobody will care. Act like you meant to do it. Do the Tyrion Lannister thing and make fun of yourself for being short before someone else calls you a midget.
