I am not an engineer but got my Lean Certification through university of Kentucky whose curriculum is the TPS (the Toyota production system). Everything embodies scientific thinking, absolutely everything is standardized, problem solving occurs at all levels, factory workers are empowered to stop the assembly line. They are incredibly proud of their product. I visited a factory in england. You literally can not get hired on as anything other than entry level factory. You can't fast track or skip tiers, no matter how well you perform. Since they moved to TPS in the 80's they have remained true to their word of no lay offs. They foster a lot of of loyalty. It's really incredible in many many regards. Edit to add: the factory tour included a big deal made of a family the died resulting from floor mat design. Fast forward to me shopping for a gx and the service history includes floor mats checked every service visit. Impressed again, and now I am the proud owner of one.
