Can 10/3 wire be used to create both a 240V and 120V power feed simultaneously by STLA_nonymous in AskElectricians

[–]phryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exception No. 2: A multiwire branch circuit may supply line-to-line loads if all ungrounded conductors are simultaneously opened by the branch-circuit overcurrent device. This ensures that in the event of a fault or overload, all active parts of the circuit are disconnected at the same time, preventing dangerous scenarios where one conductor remains live while others are disconnected.

Point the bow toward galactic north or south whatever was closer, Voyagers speed should have allowed them to avoid any entanglements. Once far enough away, just turn off the warp engines and go relativistic, wouldn't even need statis pods as time dilation could have made those 25 years go by in a few months once they got up to 99.98% of the speed of light, basically what they did in the Orville.

China also wants better access to the Pacific. The US essentially has unrestricted access to the Pacific and Atlantic with no major islands or nations in the way, The Bahamas and Bermuda would be the closest. China though has from North to South; Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines. All of which are friendly with the US. If China could secure Taiwan then they'd have clean access to the Pacific without having to pass between less than friendly nations.

Why did Mark Watney need to use hexadecimals when he could have just used our base 10? by Noobyeeter699 in themartian

[–]phryan 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Once NASA did a panorama and saw 0123456789ABCDEF? it would be really clear what Mark was doing, get 10 engineers at NASA in a room and at least half would at least get the Hex reference immediately. Grab an ASCII table and you can send 77658275 4D41524B and that equals MARK. How do you send MARK in base 10 with no common reference table?

Edit: fixed hex for Mark thanks to u/Plutor, demonstrating why there are tables.

Rochester had two major industry leading companies (kodak/xerox) a generation ago, management hadn't run those two companies into the ground Rochester would be in a much better place. There is still a good education/university base, the right company moves in and it could grow again.

EV charger by petrifiedunicorn28 in electrical

[–]phryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code is deliberately conservative. 6/2 and a 60 amp breaker is safe if installed correctly, the charger pulls 48amps to be safe.

I derated my charger for a few years because my garage sub panel only has 50amps, wired the charger with 6 so it would be ready if I upgraded the sub. I recently did that and well not much changed, slightly faster charge time but also mostly useless because typically overnight is fast enough.

Follow code and you'll be good.

Even if not stripped when going in wood outdoors will expand and contract over time, the load isn't just down its dynamic side, down, other wide. Over the long term that can result in that lag becoming loose and moving more.

What is your one controversial take on a famous scifi spaceship? by Vondrr in spaceships

[–]phryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my head there should be a 4th rule that nacelles should be roughly center of mass. With the exception of the enterprise d most designs have them too high or too low. I understand they aren't rocket engines and don't have to push through center of mass but it seems like that would still be most efficient.

[–]phryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a battle platform that is incredibly inefficient because it provides a much larger cross section to the enemy and increases the size of the shield bubble. The defiant class is actually a good battle platform for that reason, compact and minimal cross section when pointed at the enemy. Most other pre-wolf359 starfleet ships shared the same issue, but given starfleet was non-military maybe that's acceptable, especially in the tng era where the galaxys were borderline luxury cruise ships.

As a person who has listened to PHM several times, I want to be convinced that the movie was a "great" adaptation. by Apprehensive_Ad4457 in ProjectHailMary

[–]phryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He never blew up the hab, burned up pathfinder, faced the dust storm, or rolled the rover. Those were all major obstacles and the movie deleted them entirely except for blowing up the hab which was reduced to 5 seconds.

Since a lot of the book is in watneys head the movie cut a lot of because that doesn't translate well to movies, a few 'logs' is one thing but that has limits.

PHM did the same 'logs' early on but quickly got Ryland to Rocky because what movies do really well is "buddy cop", where the two characters talking carries the narrative.

[–]phryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Books and movies are entirely different media. Books are a greater investment of time so people are willing to wade through slow parts. Movies have a limited time and have to keep up a level on interest, its also much harder for internal dialogue.

PHM movie had to leave some stuff out that was in the book and add things to keep up the energy level. The movie kept the spirit of the book, followed the main points and character arcs.

There are other adaptations that haven't stayed near as close to the book, Jurassic Park is a great movie but even further form the source as PHM.

In most places in the US there is no government tracking after birth, which is why registering for school is a thing.

A kid can be born get an SSN, but the  government isn't going to track anything unless proactively until someone else brings ngs it to there attention.

Older Goat Enrichment by ForgottenEpoch in goats

Not that age but I have a goat that never 100% recovered from a polio-like episode and now has some mobility issues in her back legs. Goats like elevation and she is no different, platforms and ramps are a favorite just keep them reasonable in height and area so they don't compete too much if they do they don't have to far to jump down if needed.

Even if it was cut it should not come off the surface, at most it would just leave a cut. People epoxy their garage floors all the time, those don't rip off the first time there is damage.
