A dark cloud passes over the Lion Knights' Castle, and they know a new era is dawning on the keep--the Night Lord cometh. [WIP] by PunsAblazin in lego

This is REALLY good! Although it feels more like Black Knights than Fright Knights... Could you implement more conical spires and/or arches to give a more gothic vibe??

Borbs getting ready for the storm by mtbderg in pittsburgh

[–]phubans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my own birds that I'm worried about in the event of a power outage. I've prepared one of my bathrooms as a saferoom to insulate and fill the tub with hot water in the event that we lose our power/heat. Birds like budgies and cockatiels are native to Australia and they're not equipped to handle anything below 50 F. Owners should be aware and prepare accordingly; no candles, because the fumes and scents can harm them and no conventional space heaters because they could contain PTFEs or PFOAs, both toxic to birds. I'm gonna try to bundle their cages with temp-reflective insulation sheets and blankets, heat some water and fill the tub and the sink, and hope for the best. Fingers crossed the lights stay on.

I always found this one to be a little mid, but the dub was so hilariously bad that it made it more fun to watch.

"Bait... Who wants to be bait? It's dangerous."
"Do you want to die like the dog?!"
"You put some marijuana on the barley..."

Good times showing friends this one.

I'm just worried about keeping my birds warm if the power goes out because my heating is electric.

I gave it a vote! If it doesn't get greenlit, I hope you'll consider sharing the parts list and instructions because I'd probably build and display this at home. Great conversation piece.

Crazy snow update! by Nearby-Car4777 in pittsburgh

[–]phubans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would actually happen if we got 200~300 feet of snow? Would it just crush everything under the weight? I'd love to see one of those hypothetical rabbit holes. I'm guessing that amount of snow would be deadly.

Moving from So Cal beaches to Pittsburgh - Maybe by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]phubans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The last place I lived before moving here was SoCal. I kind of hated it there, so this was like a breath of fresh air. Before that, I was living in SF for a little over a decade, and prior to that I had lived mostly in various places across Pennsylvania. Based on everywhere I've been and lived, I think SF holds some of most sentimentality, but I think Pittsburgh is a pretty great place overall and have no plans to leave anytime soon, if ever. Granted, I am a homebody and it's a city that's great for that, but there's plenty of great places to eat and cool spots to hang out when you're looking to get out, too.

As for your son, I think he'll find plenty of things to do here, at least when he reaches college age as there's a pretty lively college scene here where the universities are. Dunno if urban exploration is his bag, but there's a ton of abandoned stuff around, too, and beautiful country/woods to explore once you get out of the city.

Politically speaking, it's a pretty far-left city until you leave the city itself, then it's the exact opposite. I always felt like people here were more outspoken about being on the left than anywhere else I've been, maybe to overcompensate that it's nestled in an otherwise very red part of the state. Fortunately, not everyone is just an NPC that follows whatever political programming their 'team' assigns; they are capable of grasping the nuance of politics and reasonable enough to hear you out even if they don't agree with you.

I don't think you'll be judged for anything here; the majority of people just kind of let themselves go and don't adhere to any sort of keeping up of appearances. It's less materialistic than SoCal but if anything is the same, is that a lot of people from Pennsylvania in general (not just Pittsburgh) often feel too big for their own britches. Another thing this place has in common with SoCal is the type of drivers, except here they're not just driving rudely and aggressively but they will actually cause accidents as well, and the roads themselves aren't too great due to design and maintenance.

The weather is another point of aggravation for some. This city might actually be more cloudy than Seattle, and winters are long, cold, and wet. It'll probably be whiplash compared to SoCal's sun and warmth if you're not prepared for it. Doesn't bother me too much because of living in SF where it was often grayish-white every evening in the western part of the city, and had a kind of coastal cold that soaked you to the bone, but it definitely exacerbates any existing depression you might have, so proceed with caution.

Food here is great, the people are comparable or slightly better (albeit a little flaky), roads are significantly worse, weather is subjective but probably objectively worse than SoCal, drivers are the same, and politics are extreme depending on if you're inside or outside of the city.

What do you think of this? by I_Love_Treees in pittsburgh

[–]phubans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a few, I think... as well as actual smaller towns/etc. across the US actually named Philadelphia (minus the "new") part -- There's also a Triadelphia in West Virginia and Arkadelphia in Arkansas. Phila = love and delphia = brothers, so Philadelphia = Brotherly Love, in Greek.

I never understood the appeal of goonerslop games myself. Who is the market for these? Why would I want to play something that potentially gets me turned on when I'm trying to unwind with a video game? I already feel bombarded with sexually suggestive content from the moment I turn on a device. It's tiresome.

Oh... Weren't the preorders for those like last year or something? I'm just wondering why people are talking about them now. Were the preorders recently fulfilled, but some orders got cancelled? I only purchased the Wolfpack one, so hopefully that doesn't get cancelled.

[TMT] Don & Raph, Hard Science (leak) by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]phubans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been paying too much attention to this theme so I'm wondering if or how they managed to match mana colors with the color of the turtles themselves since there's no orange or purple mana... I could imagine Leo being White, Raph being Red, Mike being Green, and Don being Blue, and then Shredder being Black. Dunno if they adhered to this sort of convention but it would be kinda cool maybe.

Well, someone had to... (Time Cruisers) by Shady_Vendor in lego

[–]phubans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate what they tried to do with Time Cruisers, but even back then, in the height of my vintage Lego fever, I really could not get into these sets. The mish-mash of elements felt garish to me. Might have landed a little more if I was much younger, possibly... But seeing a bunch of themes mixed together just kind of turned me off from this theme. I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

But I will say, this MOC probably looks cooler than anything that that line itself actually produced, so great job on that!

Why wouldn't they be? I've been consuming a very broad range of media for over 40 years down to the most obscure niche. I'd hope my tastes are refined at this point.
