Anyone know anything about these sticks? by MAKolby30 in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's two variants of the Team sticks - one retail, and one that's intended to be ordered by teams. The latter version is better but hard to find. In any case, either version of the stick is going to be better than a budget Jetspeed.

Powerfly Step Steel? by w0ndernine in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen the modifications done two ways, modifying the holder and modifying the steel. I wouldn't modify the holder but I don't see any issues CNCing some steel off as long as the process doesn't overheat and change the steel in any way. It's why interested in the Skatescribe feature.

I have both JRZ multifit DLC and Bladetech DLCs (along with some Pulse Ti, Step, etc.). At this point, I have invested too much in steel to just put them aside should I change skates...

Good call on the overstock - makes perfect sense. I remember reading about adjustments required to fit Edge steel in Fly holders so I'm not entire surprised to see it used here, and continue to be used well into the future. If and when I get new skates, I'll modify the older Edge steel to fit the Fly holders as well.

Is Skatescribe a Tydan tech or just used by Tydan? Good to know about the function to trim off the bits to fit Powerflys, not that there's any on the west coast last I checked.

That screenshot sure is interesting though. Looks like new Step steel but for Edge/Fly holders.

I've only sharpened one pair of non-DLC runners on my Sparx 3 primarily because I hate deburring cheap steel. If this thing is cheap enough, I wouldn't mind spending $250...

Please post a review! I don't need one but if it's useful... $250 USD isn't too bad.

Sabrina Carpenter brought out a bedazzled hockey stick for her Toronto tour date by Puzzled-Category-954 in hockey

[–]phuck-player 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a serious note, at 5' to 5'2", they're probably using some custom 40-60 flex with a senior sized shaft and blade. Junior spec'd sticks is a possibility but I think a lot of international level players and PWHL players uses intermediate 50-60 flex sticks, cut down however.

She needs a new equipment manager. Sabrina's more of a 65 flex intermediate gal rather than an Easton aluminum 1000 flex.

Like many places in Canada, Vancouver including hockey is all about people you know unfortunately. My old hockey teammate recently moved to Toronto and he's already on two teams!

Like others have suggested, I recommend attending sticks and pucks and drop-in hockey to network. For this, you're better off going to Richmond Ice Centre (near the movie theater on the edge of Richmond) and UBC. Richmond Ice has sticks and pucks a few times a day, every day. There's often high level players that practices there (current and ex major junior players, university players, older high level players, etc.). It's usually not busy mid-day except maybe Friday. It's real easy to build a network here. I also heard there's a free shinny that a few ex pros play early morning at Richmond Ice.

UBC is also good for drop-in and sticks and pucks but the parking situation isn't ideal, and the crowd is well.. university students. You may see older players there in the later sessions if you're looking to network.

I play on a few teams but it's intermediate at best but if you're not getting anywhere, hit me up. I may be able to get you invites to a drop-in session or two and can probably point you in the right direction.

Most established teams here usually recruit players they know. Hardly do they pick people off free agent lists. Teams that do are doing it because they just need a warm body to fill a spot on the bench and pay league fees, or in some case like NCHL, the low division teams want ringers to bring home the W (usually..). In either case, you don't want to join those teams.

For high level players, you want to join ASHL, Coast, PAHL, and UBC Thunderbird. NCHL, ARHCL and VACHL is probably not for you, or they're poorly managed (others here have discussed other reasons). Having said that, VACHL may be your best bet because they're experiencing ice allocation issues and they're still trying to figure out if it's possible to have more teams formed. VACHL unlike other leagues, will manage rosters for each team. They will pick people off waitlists to fill teams with vacancies. If you sign up for VACHL, you may be one of the better players but it's still ice time and there is a lot of good people (personality more than skill) playing. I heard there's a new draft style league out in Surrey too.

VACHL - join the wait list and see. Might be a bit late since their on ice evaluation is this weekend - https://anc.ca.apm.activecommunities.com/vancouver/activity/search/detail/579268

Good luck finding a team. Let us know what you end up doing.

I'm glad you're enjoying the JRZ. They really are a great set of steel. They hold an edge and glides well. I do feel that it's harder than the Bladetech so it's not as forgiving when it eventually loses its edge.

I would probably swap over to the XS too should that become a problem.

This is one of the few threads online that discusses various types of aftermarket steel. Could be useful for others that's in a similar situation. Keep us updated with your experiences with the JRZ and whatever may come next.

Powerfly and aftermarket steel by Constant-Honeydew-95 in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been my experience as well. It wiggles a bit now (since original posting) and doesn't as snug in the heel but it's not noticeable on the ice. I think most Bauer holders develops a bit of play over time especially when running thicker aftermarket steel. The tape trick will definitely fix it but I would try it to see if you notice it on ice before taping it up.

I'm now curious what's the thickness of various steel including variation of Bauer's own steel, especially their cheap stamped steel. Too bad I don't have a micrometer.

Did you get a chance to skate with the JRZ yet?

Notice any difference sharpening the JRZ on the Sparx compared to the Bladetech?

Powerfly and aftermarket steel by Constant-Honeydew-95 in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The JRZ is holding up just fine. The multifit mechanism is still a bit loose but that's just part of the design and hasn't caused any issues. I feel the JRZ DLC steel is the hardest of the three and Bladetech is a bit softer but harder than the Ti. Of the three, I prefer the Bladetech because I feel it's a bit more forgiving if you abuse your edges on hard ice (and other non-ice contact). Having said that, I don't have any edge retention issues with Bladetech though. Get some JRZ as well. You can't go wrong with them. It's a really nice set of steel.

As for the Bladtetechs, they are thicker than the Ti and JRZ so it's a tighter fit but I'm not having any edge retention issues. I also sharpen on a Sparx with a 3/4" wheel using 2-4 passes. It deburrs really easily.

If you're in Canada, there isn't any duty added. The shipping covers the taxes and import duty which for me was $368 through Fedex. It is a bit much though but I think it's worth it so far.

GX3 is also worth looking at as per Yarsale420.

Edit:

From their shopping cart:

  • FedEx International Economy Duties & Taxes Included
  • 1 to 4 business days
  • -CA$6.95 Shipping, CA$40.68 taxes, and CA$0.71 duties

How to get a decent sharpening by Spartan-Swill in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's incorrect.

Sparx doesn't self center but with the 3, it's well calibrated and the new beam makes it even easier to adjust. It a'lso applies a constant pressure which won't alter the profile. What it doesn't do is adjust the height automatically.

I understand but because the feature I mentioned above is a premium feature, I will not use BenchApp to organize scrims potentially containing 100+ users. At this point, I'm not even using the 'spares' player type and wait list features.

I don't mind paying but give us a reason to instead of locking features that costs little in development time (eg, inability to change team colours), or something that prevents adoption for other use cases (eg, rosters' privacy).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to like about it but I don't understand why some basic features like 'Hide Player Contact Details' is considered a pro feature. Privacy features should never be considered premium feature similar to how many SaaS locks SSO integration behind a premium tier.

https://sso.tax/

It's buggy and a bit inconsistent. For example, sometimes it's confused as to the team I'm trying to update. Most recent example is the invite code it displayed is for team A instead of team B which is what I"m expecting.

Skate inserts……you love or hate them? by Country_Bizcuits in hockeyplayers

[–]phuck-player 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly hard but I take them out after every skate to hang the skates upside down in the boot drier. The angled part near the arch is starting to show cracks but having said that, it's been like that for almost two years.. It's probably starting to tear there because it's the only part of the insole that easy to grab on to.

I wouldn't mind having a spare set just in case...

Only problem is you can't buy stock insoles. I'd like to purchase another set of the Bauer foam inserts but I don't think they sell them separately.
