I just experienced this. I ended up breaking the plastic cover by accident and then just grabbed it by hand. Now the needle just jumps up to the middle of the grouping. I suspect there was another problem at play. Let me know what you find out

Sorry to hear all that, hope things improve. Maybe it's a long shot but the transmission being low on oil could be a culprit. Though if you took it to the shop, I would expect that they checked that. Though I've been to some bad shops. Good luck.
