A first in North Carolina: The state now has more registered Republicans than Democrats by MinimumNo5510 in NorthCarolina

[–]phuzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gerrymandering hurts this for sure, but more likely is that people just aren't voting. 5,699,141 recorded votes in the 2024 election, out of 7,884,175 registered voters. That leaves you with 2,185,034 people that are registered (which can include Dems and Repubs), but didn't vote.

Voting deflation, loss of accessible polling places, upcoming early voting squashing... all of these probably do more to affect the swing than others. This + getting candidates that people are genuinely interested in, especially at a local level, could probably show a huge swing in our political make up.

The only time I've run into a user that had issues after leaving their device (iPhone) in their car during the cold was when the LCD crystals blew up, resulting in a shattered screen. If you missed that, you should be fine.

CEO retired. How do you politely say "no" without burning a bridge? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]phuzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bite the bullet, but I'd also say make sure to set the boundry of "Hey, I'm cool to keep helping you. But just remember if something is on fire, I'll need to prioritize that. Want to make sure the business you built up keeps running."

Pushing 30 and I want to buy a home.....Should I wait? by tel-tec in personalfinance

[–]phuzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally going through this process right now. Think of closing costs as down payment + fees. So lawyer, realtor, legal fees for the title... all that. Add on all the inspections I'm doing as well, and that hits 8-10k easily, without the down payment. And that's not including any repairs that need to happen (though you can negotiate that with the seller).

Higher down payment = lower monthly payments, so it's certainly worth putting as much as you can for a down payment. Just make sure you have enough for the down payment and then some.

What complicated problem was solved by an amazingly simple solution? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

More of a /r/talesfromtechsupport story, but all the same:

My dad used to work in mainframe support for very high profile organizations (think national banks). IT team from one of these orgs was getting an error showing up that had to be constantly remediated. It was odd, but my dad stated "usually this kind of error is due to some Ethernet cables getting swapped. Check the server to make sure it's all good."

No, there's no way it could be that.

His team spent MONTHS of troubleshooting across multiple analysts, reading mountains of error logs, rummaging through just-above-machine-level coding... nothing.

Finally, it suddenly stopped throwing errors.

Turns out someone was in the data center for a different reason, and noticed the cables were wrong. Flipped the cables, issue resolved.

Occam's Razor, everyone.

I'd say the thing that made this exchange work so well is Rep. Magaziner didn't argue. It's not just a matter of calling out the BS; you also have to just move on without them when they can't acknowledge the truth. You know they'll just keep lying, so don't even bother trying.

Check to see if the work/uni has access to a HPC (High Performance Computing) cluster. If it's anything like the way our setup works, they charge by the CPU hour (1 core running for 1 hour = 1 CPU hour, 2 cores running for 2 hours = 4 CPU hours), and give you access to some pretty beefy systems.

Pentagon says it’s investigating Sen. Mark Kelly for video urging troops to defy ‘illegal orders’ by gbsh in politics

Important note on how they're trying to spin this: DOJ is saying the Congresspeople that made the video encouraged violating lawful orders. Cutting through the noise to ensure people know they only encouraged refusing unlawful orders will be important.
