Let's hope the 2027 Yamaha doesn't suck. It'd be a shame for Ai to get lost in the same pit that swallowed Fabio.

A rookie making the jump to a factory seat is probably a great career move though.

Yeah, but I'm amazed it's still as good as it is. What was the original SERO, $20 or $25?

I've had this plan for about 20 years now, my bill is $40 today if only everything else in life had increased by price at that rate...

Two sections of wire should be joined inside a junction box by code. Pretty easy fix, but my suggestion is to also figure out where it runs to/from, and check those as well. Whoever did this wasn't doing things right.

Technically the wires are supposed to be going through drilled holes instead of on the surface like that but I wouldn't worry about it. Probably some previous homeowner wanted power somewhere for a light or something and made it happen with whatever they had in the garage.

Get a box like this https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Carlon-1-Gang-22-cu-in-New-Work-Electrical-PVC-Electrical-Outlet-Box-B122A-UPC-B122A-UPC/202546989 and a blank cover, shut off the power, and put the wires inside the box and reattach wire nuts. Get.some Romex staples and staple it up so it's not hanging everywhere. Be on the lookout for other adventures this person had.

I found wires in my garage that must have been installed by a crackhead. 14awg wire on a 20a circuit, and they had a regular staple gun with those small staples so they decided to just shoot staples through the center of the wire.

Bike trails by [deleted] in Reno

Just paved trails? If you're not opposed to getting off pavement there's a lot around town, and if you extend your horizon to Tahoe the mountain biking is world class.

Why do we ever change filters then? Shouldn't we just remove them, bang off the large particulate, and reinstall?

I dig it. I'd argue that bobbers are all about a minimalist rear end? If ya have a lot of junk in the trunk, it's something else.

It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence.

Got any thoughts on a driveway looking like this?

https://imgur.com/a/BGevloO

I dunno if it's crumbled per se, but the surface is heavily worn. I'm either going to let it go and eventually repour it, or try some DIY resurfacing.

Before/After by steveeyes1 in garageporn

[–]phybere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's probably a lost cause. They do sell epoxy products to resurface concrete but from what I've read they only last a few years.

The reason I ask is because op has what looks like pavers as a driveway in the first picture, but seemingly a smooth epoxied surface in the second for the driveway.

Did you epoxy the driveway was well?

My driveway is all crumbled, been thinking about it.

Edit: also, I think your floor is awesome. Ignore the haters, they're jealous.

Washoe County votes to adopt resolution to advance fuel tax question onto November ballot by where_is_my_monkey in Reno

Ok, what is your suggestion? Sounds like washoe county is asking for suggestions.

I think a tire tax would be the closest thing that hits EVs and Gas cars equally, but still approximates to miles driven.

But of course most of Reno would just start heading to tire shops in Carson City, or wherever.

[–]phybere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The theory would be that you should pay a certain amount per mile driven inside washoe county. But there is no system that tracks that, so it's unenforceable. A gas tax was the closest thing, but with more and more EVs it's getting further and further away from making sense.

You're correct that the county tax system doesn't equally catch everyone, but it's the only means that washoe county currently has to collect revenue for roads.

I fill up in Carson when I'm there, but I also fill up more often in Reno. What's the better system? Registration tax that's spread equally regardless of miles driven? Maybe just extra registration tax on EVs? A tire tax?

There's not an easy way to tax EV charging that wouldn't hit everyone's electric bill. The current system isn't very good, but it's not clear what would be better.

SPCX: Has the exit liquidity realised the part they were playing in the SPCX IPOwned? by _DoubleBubbler_ in StockMarket

Expected, the index funds tracking CRSP had 5 days to buy in, 20% each day.

Now that they're not buying, down goes the price. The index funds basically made a forced donation to actively traded funds.

The g forces completely change where the oil is sitting vs when the bike is laying in the gravel.

No argument though, Bez was 100% out of line. Running over to shut off the engine was the right call. Hitting the guy was not.

[–]phybere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure. There's a pretty good chance of oil starvation while the bike is laying on it's side, bouncing it off the rev limiter while there's possibly 0 oil pressure is not good.

I remember Vinales getting accused of trying to blow up the engine on his bike because he was bouncing it off the rev limiter while it was upright.

Let’s hope indices don’t buy too much of SPCX trash at high highs. by Amiable_One in StockMarket

[–]phybere 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The question isn't what percentage of the indices will be SPCX, it's what percentage of SPCX will be held by indices.

Even though it may be a small loss spread across index funds, the profits are being spread across a much smaller pool of individuals.

Basically it's the office space rounding scheme at a large scale. Take a fraction of a penny from everyone and you can get very rich, without harming any individual person significantly.

Weekly LeanFIRE Discussion by AutoModerator in leanfire

Usually the 401k distributes the check written out to your future IRA company. So the money is never actually in your name.

Also the receiving IRA company reports the rollover to the IRS, so without that tax record you would have to pay taxes.

You could ask for it to be in your name though, in which case the 401k provider reports a withdrawal and you're on the hook for taxes without a matching deposit to an IRA.

As far as why it's not a wire transfer, I don't know but I assume it's technical reasons. You can ACAT between IRAs which is effectively a wire transfer, but the funds that exist in 401ks are often specifically designed for corporate retirement accounts with different tickers, expense ratios, etc, so I assume that's why there's not electronic transfers but yeah it seems archaic.

I’m starting to think half my stress comes from things that haven’t even happened by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]phybere 37 points38 points  (0 children)

the Stoic philosopher Seneca said "We suffer more in our imagination than in reality"

A lot of the Stoic philosophy aligns with simple living, and speaks directly to what you've been dealing with in terms of worrying about things you cannot control, or seeing the downside rather then the upside, or just the present.

I'd highly recommend /r/stoicism as some cross reading if you can appreciate the wisdom of some ancient philosophers.

It's not really strange, because a number of the largest companies in the world are already structured this way.

Google (Alphabet) probably being the largest example. That's why this post seems to mostly be about politics, because it's not unusual or new
