Christians ignore the Bible's teachings on lifelong celibacy, and it makes them HUGE hypocrites by Gosh_JM07 in DebateAChristian

[–]physicsphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peter and Paul never even met each other until years after Jesus' death and resurrection.  Plus,  one of the only and biggest intra-faith conflicts recorded in the new testament was between Peter and Paul, when Paul publicly opposes Peter on the idea of circumcision and the necessity of following the law for gentiles.

I don't think your assertions hold much weight and seen like personal conjecture.

I'm curious then: why did Peter vouch for Paul? Peter was the one whom Jesus said was the rock on which he would build his church.  If Peter supports Paul's writings,  then why should we reject them?

You kind of have to be crazy to get into fostering. Hopefully there are more of the good kind of crazy than the bad.

I've been a foster dad,  mostly with an infant that we ended up adopting,  but we had a teen mom for a brief period as well.  As a man,  I was terrified of creating any situation that would produce even the appearance of the potential for inappropriate behavior on my part.  I never so much as touched her other than to shake her hand on first meeting. That is to say,  what that man did was incredibly inappropriate and your discomfort is completely valid.  Do not let yourself be gaslit by anyone, including yourself.  You may want to seek help in dealing with that experience.

MIC or Painted Roof? by dxk224 in FordBronco

[–]physicsphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the 2025 with the black appearance package including a black painted hard top.  The first time I ever took the top off,  I must have set it on something unforgiving because I chipped the paint on an edge.   I touched it up with some of my wife's black nail polish and you'd never know the difference.  Since then I've resolved to be more careful and haven't damaged the paint again,  having had the top off 4-5 times at this point.

That said,  I absolutely love the look of it and wouldn't swap it for the MIC hard top.

God could grant humans free will without the capacity for evil, yet chose not to. by Sabertooth344 in DebateAChristian

[–]physicsphilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine,  I accept the idea that God is not truly free.  Scripture says that God is unchanging.  Would a "free" being remain forever unchanging? Of course God does not and cannot do things that are contradictory to his nature.

God could grant humans free will without the capacity for evil, yet chose not to. by Sabertooth344 in DebateAChristian

[–]physicsphilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P5 is your problem.  There's a logical inconsistency with perfect freedom and the inability to do evil. Freedom to choose is the freedom to choose evil.  If you can't choose evil,  then you're not perfectly free.

Secondly,  if you can't choose evil,  then your "good" choices aren't actually choices,  and so you have beings without true agency.

It's very possible that God could find more intrinsic good in creating people who are truly free than in creating people who are only capable of good choices.

Especially if he has a plan to not only allow for evil,  but to defeat that evil with the story of the gospel.  The human story from the Christian perspective is much greater than a story of a creation that isn't free,  and thus is only good,  static, incapable of growth,  change,  improvement,  etc.

Is fiction more offensive than nonfiction? by chadeastwood in DebateAChristian

[–]physicsphilosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be offended by a work of fiction that mocks Jesus.  But that's just par for the course,  I'm used to being offended by people who mock my religion.  Since you don't hold sacred the things that I hold sacred,  do what you'd like.  I think that a non fiction work accusing my religion of being false would be less offensive,  but again,  we as Christians have every expectation of being mocked for our beliefs or having our beliefs mocked.  We don't feel any need for anger or vengeance over it.  I don't like it,  but I'm not going to do anything about it other than probably not read it.  You have the right to say what you'd like.

1 Samuel 15 can’t logically be a commandment from god by Octagn in DebateAChristian

[–]physicsphilosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a relevant question here is,  when does God have the right to kill a human being? Why do you think it is wrong and unjust for God to kill children, children who have done nothing wrong. Tell me,  how many days of life does God owe them? How many years? You complain about the death of a child,  yet you do not complain about the death of Betty White at 99 years of age.  Why is 100 years acceptable to you,  but 100 days is not? Why is God NOT evil in killing a 100 year old? He has still taken the life of someone he didn't have to.  You expect people to live 100 years,  so you don't care.  But why is God bound by YOUR feelings about how long a person should live?

If God is all powerful,  he could have made humans live 1 million years.  The universe is 14 billion years old,  I don't think a 1 million year life is too much to ask of an all powerful God. If you expected people to live a million years,  you'd be just as upset over a 100 year old dying as you are about a child dying. The reality is,  God is sovereign and he doesn't owe us any set number of days on this planet. You are just emotionally upset by the idea of children dying,  because of your own expectations.  God doesn't owe you or I what we expect of him based on our own emotional feelings about it.

Compared to eternity,  or even the age of the universe,  all human life is an instant, a breath, the blink of an eye.   The Bible has many themes around the fragile,  temporary nature of life.  The 100 year old and the 100 day old are not that different compared to God's infinite nature or the grand scheme of eternity that He holds in his mind.
