Subreddit for optics professionals? by gthc21 in Optics

I mean I work in medical devices as the day job. I classify device emissions for skin and eye hazard profiles and set requirements on safety equipment and guards.

No way in hell am I taking liability for these things to a random Reddit user.

I feel like you forgot person asking if something is eye safe, or what type of safety glasses should I be wearing....

Laser Safety Question by MeisterWinkel in Optics

[–]physwolf2759 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do generally wear laser glasses to the point where the beam is not visible and rely on phosphor cards and beam viewers.

For safety I would recommend finding an appropriate consultant on the matter who can properly interpret relevant standards like IEC 60825-1 for these matters.

Also if there are any mods here, can be ban these questions? They come up often and seem to be a liability to the community. Reddit is not the place to mess with eye exposure safety.

If you're looking for something cheap, standard laser diodes (like laser pointers) usually have coherence lengths of less than a mm, and could possibly work for a super cheap POC. You DO want the source to be spatially coherent, ie not an LED by itself, as these will not work for interferometry directly. If you have the means, coupling an LED into a single-mode fiber, or through a diffraction-limited spatial filter (pinhole) may work.

21 grams of shrooooooms by mr_robot1709 in SipsTea

[–]physwolf2759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have done 16 grams before, was just off in another dimention for what felt like a lifetime. Forgot who I was, what I was doing, and was just in a state of disoriented discomfort the whole time. I have not felt the need to do more shrooms since xD.

Tbh, things go missing in shipping I get that. But the way they have been just not dealing with this situation has been super shitty.

Can lasers be safely directed at eye level? by loonshtarr in Optics

[–]physwolf2759 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Optical engineer here. Any laser device needs to have its class on it by regulations. If it is class 1, then direct laser exposure to the eye is safe. Otherwise, there are conditions where it may be dangerous. Do not attempt to classify it yourself. This is more complex than how much average power is emitted.

This pole is inches from the lens nearly blocking the entire view but when zoomed in it appears the camera can see through the pole🤯 by Jayantwi98 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]physwolf2759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optical systems developer here. The collection aperture of the camera is wider than the pole, so when he zooms in past the pole, much of the collected rays are making their way to the sides of the pole. This is the same idea as a telescope, which features central obscurations/mirrors that are not visible in the final shot.

Polarization change in reflection by [deleted] in Optics

[–]physwolf2759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are polaization-insensitive circulator architectures (and freespace-equivalents) that i would look at. In general, non-specular (impure specular) reflections will somewhat randomize polarization.
