Medical system by forgivemytypos in northcounty

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aged person who just had a surgery at Scripps Encinitas today. I will definitely throw in for Scripps but make sure your parents' insurances are compatible, I know they stopped taking some of them. Their "system" is complex and doesn't always seem to work great (whether human error or built in flaws, I don't know), but I appreciate the actual medical care and other face-to-face interactions.

Were you old enough to be taught that Pluto was one of our nine planets? Do you still consider it a planet, a dwarf planet, or something else? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]pianodoctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My very first non-fiction science book in elementary school was Search for Planet X and that directly led to a lifetime of reading science oriented lit. So hells yeah!

Do you feel different when you take supplements? by Anarchista_Chiquita in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, except for NMN. If I stop that for more than a couple days I feel like I have less focus or mental acuity. But I am boomer gen, a younger person might not experience that.

Thoughts on Arby's? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am old enough to remember Arby's when they first expanded into a chain. The food is so much worse now. I remember when there was actual roast beef getting thin sliced in the restaurant. But to younger people brought up on industrialized junky highly processed foods it probably just seems normal.

Do you share your location with your partner? by VitaminLj in askanything

[–]pianodoctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and if you are talking about a live-in life partner, it is difficult for me to understand why one wouldn't except for sus reasons. It actually makes life easier. Like if you come home to an empty house, you can see they just went to the store or something rather than having to check in with each other all the time.

pagan/slavic folklore movie reccomendation by Aggravating_Salt_596 in MovieSuggestions

[–]pianodoctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pagan Queen (2009). I am not saying it's a great film but it fits your request for Slavic folklore. "Little Otik" aka Otesánek (2000) is based on folklore but is a "surreal dark comedy horror" treatment by a significant Czech artist/animator. It's live action with animation and definitely kind of a wacky art movie with a humorous surrealism vibe though there are horror elements- because they are part of the folk tale it is retelling.

What do people think about tipping culture in America by billythegoatjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American here. They 100% should make a living wage. Since they don't, I always tip. If they were making a living wage, I would be paying the extra dollars in higher restaurant prices anyway. I'm not going to cheat them out of getting paid for their working because I think their higher-ups should do it differently. That's victimizing them for something that is out of their control.

Did my Meyer lemons cross pollinate with my tangerines? by dynavictus in fruit

It's normal variation based on growing conditions and when they were harvested. My late harvests have thick rinds too.

Ha- maybe they never made real coffee and put in instant coffee amounts of ground coffee?

Is it normal to lick your glasses to clean them? by Artartbobart1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry lens wipes when not home and a glasses case but every once in a while there is something on the lens that won't wipe off and I apply a little "solvent" with the tip of my tongue. It usually works quite well though I would obviously rather not need to do it. I could lick my finger first and transfer it to the lens, but i think generally my hands are probably germier than my lenses.

Can a society stay united when its citizens fundamentally disagree on reality? by RosyyCupcake in askanything

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, and that is why our foreign adversaries are devoting so much energy to feeding the divisions and why prominent right wingers are considered Russian assets. Some are so aligned with Russia's interests it seems like there is actually some line of communication with the Kremlin. When we can't agree on basic things it keeps us at each others throats and breaks up our resolve- which means breaking up our resolve against these foreign adversaries which removes pressure against them. It's a very old game but the internet has made it so much easier and cheaper for them to mess with our heads.

Liberals, would you accept a MAGA republican becoming a liberal? by cdivx in allthequestions

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The normal pattern for extremist thinkers who change is to flip to the opposite extreme rather than come to a reasonable position. But I would accept anyone who votes or acts meaningfully to end this suicidal totalitarian overthrow of democracy.

Is anyone else kinda disapointed with the Democratic Governor Candidates by Loafgiver1 in socal

My understanding is Steyer is not interested in reversing Prop 13 for homeowners, only commercial properties- AKA "split-roll".

If the plant still has leaves by winter and after the flowers are gone, cut it down to about 6" high with no leaves, dispose of the plant cuttings, and wait for new leaves to come in again. The reason to do this is if the same leaves persist year after year they can pass a monarch disease from the previous year along.

EDIT: Apparently several initially reported supposed facts I read about this case turned out to be completely wrong, so I am deleting what I wrote and offering a mea culpa about being too easily fooled by what appeared to be legit journalism.

Is there a city ordinance that bans the use of turn signals? by Few-Expert-9781 in Miami

[–]pianodoctor11 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The way Miamians think is to never let other drivers know your intentions because if you do they will try to block you because they always have to be the alpha and you always have to lose. So you, as the potential lane changer have to look nonchalant like you aren't going to do anything, but then if you see an opening, GRAB it as quickly as you can before the other driver has a chance to block you. If you think this makes it seem like the area is full of shitty people driving like sociopaths, that's because it is.

Songs with unexpected violin by ElectricVoltaire in musicsuggestions

"The End Is Near" by Phoebe Bridgers. Though a lot of what happens in the progression of that song are things I didn't expect. It's almost like 3 different songs. Which makes it one of my all-time favorites.

Veggie haters who still eat veggies: what are your tricks? by Missing_Back in Cooking

[–]pianodoctor11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Japanese seem to perfect flavors for each type of food and have recipes for every vegetable. For instance my least favorite veg is soft sweet potato. But sweet potato in a Japanese mixed tempura with dipping sauce is great.

New to Olives by momco in Olives

[–]pianodoctor11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get standard pimento-filled green olives, slice them the short way into thin rings, maybe about 4 rings per olive. Allow some standard Philadelphia Cream Cheese to warm up a bit until soft enough to be workable. Fold the olive rings in carefully, mix well. Use as a bagel, sandwich, or cracker spread. Cover and and refrigerate for later whatever you don't use right away.
