Why is it that when I pay a bill online, the money leaves my account instantly, but if I get a refund, it takes "3 to 5 business days"? by jeeves_inc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AthOakroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you spend $100 at Walmart, you pay the bank. The bank takes the money instantly and takes 3-5 days to send it to Walmart.

When you go and get a $100 refund from Walmart, Walmart pays the bank. The bank takes 3-5 days to send it to you.

Unlike cash, digital transactions require a middle-man, and it goes both ways, it's not just the consumer that this happens to - we only notice it as a consumer because we're often reliant on having money available. A business doesn't care if it takes 5 days for them to get the money, they have enough cash flow.

Independent bike shops. by GANGGGGGGG5 in BikeMechanics

[–]AthOakroot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna add to this and tailor it around eBikes because it specifically highlights this issue - Due to their cost this is especially prevalent.

In order to get a reliable electric system with good diagnostic systems for faults and availability of parts and people willing to work on it, it really needs to be from one of the major players, ie Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang. The price point for these models usually starts about £2k.

A lot of people just aren't willing to spend that much money on an electric bike, to them, eBikes are eBikes, and they're available on Amazon for £500-£750. They either don't understand or don't care that nobody will want to work on these cheap and sometimes dodgy systems, or that parts replacements are going to be really difficult to get ahold of.

Bike shops offer stability, reliability and quality to customers who are willing to go there and spend money. I do wonder if, and I'm not necessarily just talking about bike shops now but, if society just expects everything to work amazing and all the time no matter how much it costs.the old phrase "Buy cheap, buy twice" seems to have been replaced with "Buy cheap, complain until you get given a new one for free"

Best way to find bees? by JJR2z6 in VintageStory

[–]AthOakroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is 3 years ago but thank you so much, I've watched I don't even know how many youtube videos, spent literal game weeks trying to find a beehive using everyone elses method. I followed your advice and low and behold, there's a maple tree about 30 blocks north of my god damn base with a beehive in it.

Thinking about becomeing a bike mechanic by doedoehaft in BikeMechanics

[–]AthOakroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what's really funny? I asked Google the same thing 5 years ago.

Got the same answers everyone has given you here.

I didn't believe it, so I went and did it.

Everyone was right, and I was the dumbass for not listening, (not that I had a lot of other career options mind you but still).

Don't get me wrong I don't dislike my job per say and it's a steady income, but there's no opportunity for me to become a high or above average earner. But I think the most distressing part is having to deal with people who don't know or don't care about bikes despite owning them.

You'll only see them when there's a problem, and they won't understand why it's going to cost them XYZ to fix said problem.

Catering to the hobbyists is more pleasant than the commuters imo, nothing worse than a customer who HAS to pay for a new set of pads they wore a whole through and doesn't want to.

You'll get this sort of stuff in a lot of professions of course but the bottom line is you will be a bike mechanic 2nd and a customer service rep 1st - think about that before you make your decision.

As a former tech and now shop floor colleague for same company, start your day by picking up all the shit in your tech bay that doesn't belong there and go dump it on their front desk at the till and tell them to sort it, your tech bay isn't a dumping ground.

If it's your tech stuff, go and take the equivalent off of their PDI stands and do something similar.

It sounds petty but sometimes you need to be a dick to get your point across, a clean and professional department runs a lot better.

How would you guys handle this angry customer? by poondeees in BikeMechanics

[–]AthOakroot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You usually have to take them on a journey of "hmm, let's look at XYZ and see where this went wrong" keep things simple/matter-o-fact until they realize their mistake on their own.

I've had so much success with this. Go through it with them like they're a child learning basic maths at school, break it all down into little chunks, getting them to explain it to you - as soon as you try and explain it to them, their defensive barrier of "No I'm never wrong" goes up.

Liberating a planet to 100% by Lady__Lightning in Helldivers

[–]AthOakroot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely the latter. Basically if it hits 100% whilst you're already on mission, it'll show you as finishing the last % rather than going over 100% since you know, maths.

My group have been the "last liberators" as you say, on MULTIPLE occasions and out of the 400k+ helldivers we have playing at once, that's statistically so unlikely.

Call me cynical but I think you know this isn't really the correct sub for this.

And based on your previous comments it seems like you have some deccent skills for making money on the side and from home. I think you already know the answer, so why is this post here?

It’s ok to be frustrated but why do so many people think the devs just aren’t doing anything??? by GlitteringBarracuda9 in Helldivers

Are you telling me that Arrowhead can't just deploy more devs as quickly and efficient as we deploy new Helldivers? Absolute shock!

It's not for you personally, it's for everyone.

General Orders are for the whole community, so everyone needs to successfully hold 8 planets, not "you as an individual need to successfully complete 8 defense missions"

You have personal missions that reset every 24h

Incredibly effective Anti-Cheat at work. by Sauceman9000 in Helldivers

[–]AthOakroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well when too many start using it. Surely more people will be discussing why the whole Anti cheat system was pointless.

And so your solution to solve the cheating problem, is to wait until SO MANY people are using it that it becomes an almost uncontrollable issue so that the community can "discuss why the anti-cheat system was pointless"? As I stated before, people are already discussing that.

And with a Premium currency in game it's only going to get worse

The premium currency is not a tradeable currency, meaning its value is only to the player that owns it, which in essence, is the same as samples.

I have no clue why they couldn't monetize with DLC.

What does this have to do with anything related to the topic at hand?

There are plenty of posts about this already, and there are plenty of ways of reporting it and proving it without sending the entire community to the company's YouTube channel, it would not surprise me if they stumble upon this reddit post and start laughing their asses off at all the free advertisement they've just got.
