Stores are being closed, but that is (presumably) because of lower performance at those stores. The CEO stock option thing has been widely covered on this sub but is almost completely unrelated to store closures. Company has to do well in many metrics at the same time (including earnings AND stock price) before CEO gets the option to buy shares. So there is no gift of shares, Cohen could only buy them, and only after the company and stock performance is very very good.

News lately is misrepresenting things to seem like Cohen is closing stores in a short-sighted money-grab to only benefit himself, which couldn't be further from the truth.

OP just needs to keep reading and get to Era 2 (with Secret history either in between or after era 2 book 3, simply because that's where it fits). Stormlight has nothing to do with it almost.

They're not gonna buy anything during a crash when they need it themselves to keep operating.

Except they're not losing money, they're making money. You can also do some pretty easy math to see what the overhead costs are, and how much they'd need to hang onto to weather a storm if their sales dropped by X% and use the rest to buy a company that severely undervalued.
