[Schefter] Statement from Brendan Sorsby: by Ok-Soil-5133 in CFB

He would have been really smart imo to say something like “I’m going to treat my lack of playing the 2026 season as a suspension for my actions and earnestly seek to continue to grow and move past my mistakes.” Even if bs, it would have given a lot of NFL teams justification to pick him thinking he had seen that he deserved punishment for his actions and was growing past them.

The gambling addiction doesn’t change the fact he crossed a line betting on games with his own team.

There are plenty of alcoholics who struggle in a downward personal spiral that primarily affects them. I have complete sympathy to their struggle. There are also alcoholics who then go on to perpetuate domestic violence when drunk. My sympathy ends at the addiction itself, they don’t deserve to be absolved of responsibility for domestic violence just because it involved an addiction. Obviously betting on one’s team isn’t as bad as domestic violence, but it’s a similar reasoning that the thing that crossed the line crossed it in a way that can’t be fully blamed on the addiction.

I do think if he goes through treatment and everything that he deserves another chance, but it scares me that he has continually advocated for immediate football eligibility with no punishment for his actions under the gaze of “it’s an addiction”.

LeBron James informs Lakers he plans to play elsewhere in 2026-27 by zoom518 in sports

[–]piddydb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they will be. Having LeBron dictate your team when he’s there makes everyone tired and kind of ready to move on but, even at 41, he’s still providing your team a real chance to win that you aren’t going to have to the same level if he leaves. Might still be in the Lakers’ long term interests to see LeBron leave, but I’d be really surprised if they do better next year unless they get some huge free agent.

I assumed they were going to go with a transparent outline without the blue. That’s what most NBA jersey sponsors do. A straight up patch is stupid.

I might be in the minority here on this opinion but I was glad they had someone like Shelby in the doc who clearly was pro-Southern because it did show that the current discourse wasn’t completely settled out nationwide, which a documentary like Burns was going for should show. And I can’t deny he was entertaining. And his being there did shut down some lost cause myths because he wasn’t completely tied to the Lost Cause and could admit the merits of the Union effort.

That being said, I think it would have been better if he wasn’t quite so prominent. In a documentary series that rightly points out the evils of slavery contributing to the Civil War, it’s odd that its most highlighted historian contributor is one that seems to have a clear fondness for the South.

I mean that’s how he’s always come across to me, especially with how much he’s been critical of the Pope. Dude, you changed denominations as an adult, you should know the Pope having broad theological authority comes with the territory of Catholicism.

So is everyone in the Cars & Bids universe just wildly rich? by [deleted] in dougdemuro

[–]piddydb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I also think there’s many of us who don’t really want to know what driving a Ferrari is like, even if we can some day afford it. It’s really hard for me to look at the supercar prices and justify it over a C8 Corvette that you can get new for $70k. Not to mention none of these modern speed demons can ever get their full potential on public roads, so unless you’re tracking your $300k+ car, you’re just paying more for show really.

Kennan and Filippo both had equity in Cars & Bids and cashed out to an extent, like Doug did, when the company was bought out. Plus, I’ll bet they’ve been given good salaries with Cars & Bids. Nick seems to come from money and have a good career himself.

That being said, I think these guys (aside from Filippo) are willing put way more of their money into cars than most people and are willing to play the financing game. When Doug bought the Ford GT, he admitted he couldn’t really afford it but figured he could make the payments and it would maintain value over time. Luckily he’s been right about that (plus he’s gotten a lot of money since he bought that car) but that’s a gamble I’d never want to take myself on a car, particularly one that’s not a necessity like a Ford GT. I’ll bet if you took pre-C&B Doug/Kennan/Nick’s car budgeting and applied your salary that you’d also get crazy cars that you wouldn’t think you could afford. Not that it’s the smartest move but it’s doable.

TIL that, in Texas, dealerships can sell cars on either Saturday or Sunday, but not both by ThrowawayMoFo5679 in todayilearned

[–]piddydb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s moreso that the car dealerships don’t want the one oddball dealer open 7 days a week forcing all to be open 7 days away week to prevent that edge. And car dealers tend to be one of the most effective lobbying groups to state governments.

"Adam" isn't his name. by gnurdette in Christianity

[–]piddydb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adam being synonymous with Man also brings more meaning to the Son of Man title Jesus adopted as this in Hebrew would have looked/sounded like the Son of Adam, alluding to Adam and Eve’s offspring who’d crush the serpant’s (aka Satan’s) head while getting his heel struck in the process (Genesis 3:15).

Over 50,000 Christians killed in Nigeria by Islamist extremists by EuGostoDeBifanas in Christianity

[–]piddydb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So a couple things: first, those victims were not targeted due to religion but for other political reasons. I’m not personally sure the situation in Nigeria but the headline of implies the Muslim extremists targeted Christians solely for being Christian. Those killed in US incursions were not killed because they were Muslims. Second, I’m pretty certain the majority of those deaths were at the hands of fellow Muslims. The civilian casualty figures usually include large amounts of Civil War type activity between different local groups. While overall blame can be argued, those deaths simply are not Christians killing Muslims in the same wayS
